Solo Spam stew set with bulgogi, spicy level 4: Bapjangin, Seoul

In short

Bapjangin Express Bus Terminal Branch is a Korean restaurant in the underground shopping mall at Express Bus Terminal Station in Seocho, Seoul. The writer ordered the solo Spam set and smoky bulgogi at spicy level 4, got two bowls of rice in one dish for the stew, and wrapped the bulgogi in lettuce. With solo dining tables available, it was an easy, no-pressure meal for one.

Finding Bapjangin in the terminal underground mall

Bapjangin Express Bus Terminal Branch is located in the underground shopping mall at the terminal! But it's not in the restaurant row shown in these photos — as soon as you come out of the subway, head toward Shinsegae Factory and No Brand instead.

If you check the map, it's right next to the station exit! Don't get confused about the way!

Just walk straight through a passage that looks like this!

And then you'll find Bapjangin like this! There were a lot of people during meal times!

They even seem to have some kind of Spam certification mark!

The menu is posted outside the restaurant, and you can also check it on the ordering machine at the tables!

Inside the restaurant and solo dining seats

Here's what the inside of the restaurant looks like!

They also had solo dining tables like this! It was a great restaurant for eating alone without any pressure!

Once you sit down, they set up side dishes and utensils for you by default!

They gave water in what looked like a mini water purifier tank! Kind of cute haha.

They also give you a drink through the receipt review event! Since it's ₩2,000 per can, it might be worth joining the event to save a bit!

The menu and ordering — solo Spam set plus bulgogi

From here it's the menu! I ordered the solo Spam set, a drink, and the smoky bulgogi!

How spicy is level 4, really?

I also chose the spice level, and I went with level 4! It wasn't as spicy as yeoptteok (spicy rice cakes) or buldak (fire chicken)! If you like spicy food, it's the kind of level you can enjoy lightly!

If you keep your same-day meal receipt, you can also get 10% off Nineblock Coffee at the terminal! If your workplace is nearby, you can handle both your meal and coffee with the discount!

Spam stew and bulgogi, with two bowls of rice

Maybe because I ordered bulgogi, they gave me lettuce too!

The dishes came out like this! Both the stew and the bulgogi normally come with one bowl of rice each, but they gave me two bowls of rice in a single dish!

The rice was sticky and just slightly warm — perfect temperature for mixing right into the hot stew!

The Spam stew was a kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) with pork and Spam in it. Exactly the flavor you'd expect — a taste you already know can be dangerously good!

This is the smoky bulgogi! It had onion and bulgogi in it! The sauce looks intense visually, but it wasn't as strongly seasoned as it looked — the smoky flavor and the gochujang (red pepper paste) seasoning were really good!

Here's the Spam in the Spam stew! I think there were either four pieces or two — you could break them apart and eat them without feeling shortchanged!

There was also tofu and pork in it! The meat was cut into small, easy-to-eat pieces!

Mixing it with rice, it actually tasted better than gukbap (rice soup) that day!

Bulgogi lettuce wraps and roasted seaweed flakes

I ate the bulgogi wrapped in lettuce too! It felt even tastier with that smoky flavor! There was some kind of nutty savoriness — the umami and aroma really added to the taste!

I also tried sprinkling on the roasted seaweed flakes that come standard on the table! It adds a crunchy texture and a savory saltiness, so sprinkle it on according to your taste!
