Songpa noodle restaurant, king meat mandu: Hanyang Dak Kalguksu
In short
Hanyang Dak Kalguksu Main Branch is a chicken kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant in Garak-dong, Songpa, Seoul, a 2-3 minute walk from Exit 4 of Gyeongchal Hospital Station. Ordering hanyang dak kalguksu, mini suyuk (boiled pork slices) and king meat mandu alone after work, the self-bar spicy kimchi turned out to be buldak-level hot, and it worked well against the rich chicken broth made with perilla seeds. With solo tables, wifi and even a baby chair, Hanyang Dak Kalguksu suits a solo dinner or a family meal alike.

Where Hanyang Dak Kalguksu Main Branch is and when it opens
Hanyang Dak Kalguksu Main Branch is a chicken kalguksu spot in Garak-dong, a 2-3 minute walk from Exit 4 of Gyeongchal Hospital Station. It's open weekdays from 11am to 9pm, and weekends/holidays from 11am to 8pm.
They're open as usual during the Chuseok holiday too, so keep that in mind if you're planning a visit!
Inside the restaurant: what solo diners get
The inside of Hanyang Dak Kalguksu Main Branch was really clean! I spotted several tables set up for solo diners, and it also looked like a good spot for a simple family meal!
They've got 4-person tables like this too!
There's a baby chair too, so it'd be comfortable to bring a young child along for a meal!
How hot is the self-bar spicy kimchi?
This is the self-bar! I was surprised it was kept so neat and tidy even though I visited during the dinner rush!
They said they make the kimchi fresh every day! That's real dedication!
There are two kinds — spicy and mild. I tried the spicy one and... wow, is this what silbi-style raw kimchi tastes like?? haha! It's spicier than you'd expect, so be careful! The flavor is like freshly made kimjang kimchi, but the heat is roughly buldak-level!

And here's the milder kimchi too!
They also have diced radish kimchi and pickled radish!

The kalguksu contains perilla seeds, so if you have a perilla allergy, make sure to tell the staff before ordering!
There's also a free drink if you leave a review!

The menu: hanyang dak kalguksu, mini suyuk and king meat mandu
From here it's the menu! I ordered hanyang dak kalguksu, mini suyuk, and king meat mandu!

If you choose the kalguksu, you can also pick an extra-large portion!

Here's what I ended up ordering!

Besides the kiosk menu, I also snapped a photo of the wall menu, which is nice and easy to see at a glance!

There's wifi too, so it's the perfect environment for solo dining! There were actually a few people eating alone when I visited!
Here's the basic table setup!
Utensils are kept in a drawer under the table!

How the chicken kalguksu tastes: rich broth with perilla seeds
The kalguksu came out right after I ordered! It seemed like they combined pre-prepped ingredients to plate it fast. Still, it looked like something with real depth of flavor!

I grabbed water and the spicy kimchi from the self-bar myself!
This kimchi is seriously spicy! But it's so tasty that it went great with the noodles!

Here's the kalguksu broth! It had a real depth of flavor and tasted great. I think it's because of the perilla seeds — the broth had this rich, thick quality that made the chicken flavor really good!

There's chicken meat topping it like this too!

The noodles had that slightly hand-pulled feel to them! Chewy with just the right thickness and width, so the texture was really nice!
Mini suyuk, a portion sized for one
The mini suyuk comes out like this! It was just the right size to fit into a solo meal set!

Also the perfect size to pile onto the kalguksu!

Eating it with the kalguksu like this was so good! It felt like a little healing moment after work on a weekday. Everything was delicious and the staff were kind too — I really liked this place!

The mini suyuk slices were thin, so the texture wasn't heavy, and it went well eaten together with the noodles!
It also paired really well with the spicy kimchi!

I also tried it with the ssamjang (seasoned soybean dipping paste) that came with it, and eating it that way tasted great. Highly recommend the garlic-ssamjang-suyuk combo!

King meat mandu, dipped in the chicken broth
The meat mandu came out too, so I snapped a photo of the whole spread!

The meat mandu comes as 4 big pieces!
They were packed full of filling! Dipping them deep into the chicken broth was great — the umami of the broth and the savory flavor of the mandu paired really well together!

Is Hanyang Dak Kalguksu worth a visit?
It was a meal I had without much thought after work, but the rich flavor of the chicken broth felt so comforting that I ended up loving this place! Planning to come back again!
