With my birthday week coming up, I wanted a meal that was a little more special than usual. Good food is great, but that evening I was also looking for a place with a comfortable mood for a date — and that's exactly what I found at Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza near Sangsu Station, where the warm wood-tone interior and soft yellow lighting really lifted the evening atmosphere.

What impressed me most was that this place has held its spot for a whopping 15 years. It's clearly been a beloved date-night restaurant around Sangsu and Hongdae for a long time.

What Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza feels like for a date night
Walk into Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza and you're met with yellow lighting paired with warm wooden tables, giving the whole space a cozy, warm feeling.

Rather than loud, it had a classic feel, reminiscent of a cozy, warm-hearted wood-fired pizzeria. The walls were also filled with photos taken by what looked like plenty of regulars.

It's a mood that fits especially well for visits on somewhat special days, like birthdays or anniversaries — Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza nails that.

72-hour fermented dough: the chewy Napoli wood-fired crust

The biggest draw at Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza is, of course, the warm, comforting wood-fired pizza.

They use dough fermented for 72 hours by hand, then add fresh toppings, house-made tomato sauce, and natural mozzarella, baking it Napoli-style. The result is a refined pizza that sits light on the stomach while letting the ingredients' own flavors shine.

Quattro Stagioni: four flavors on one pizza
I was debating which flavor to get, but since this place offers half-and-half as well as a Quattro Stagioni that lets you enjoy all four signature flavors at once, I didn't hesitate to pick that.

Having four flavors on one pizza was especially perfect for a day when I wanted to try a variety.

I gasped at the visuals the moment the pizza arrived, with the natural cheese and toppings melting down deliciously! With the first bite, a rich, savory cheese flavor hits first, followed by a light, chewy dough that backs it up well.
Baked at over 400°C in the Vesuvius volcanic stone oven, the crust edges come out light yet fluffy, and the dough is even chewier. There's a subtle savory depth to it too, so I ended up eating even the crust ends I usually leave behind.

They also gave us honey, which is traditionally paired with gorgonzola, but it went well with every flavor.

It stayed true to the basics while offering a subtle yet rich cheese flavor throughout — a refined, Italian Napoli-style pizza.

Gamberi Crema penne, ordered as the side
It felt like a waste to order just pizza, so we also got a side: Gamberi Crema penne.

You can choose from 3 noodle types, and I went with penne. It's a shrimp cream sauce pasta with a slight kick of spice.

Maybe because of that spice, it wasn't heavy or cloying at all. The soft, thick sauce combined with the shrimp's umami was really delicious. The sauce soaked deep into the ridges of the penne, and it paired nicely alongside the pizza too.

The smooth, savory character typical of cream sauce came with a hint of spice added in, keeping the whole dish clean despite being a cream-based menu.
What to drink and order alongside the pizza
Beyond pizza and pasta, there are salads, wine, draft beer, and ade, so you can put together a varied meal.

The signature salads include the Fungi salad with warm mushrooms and the Cloud Bread salad made with dough fermented for 72 hours. There are also ades made from fresh fruit prepared in-house, plus wine, which really elevate the date-dinner mood.
Was Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza worth it for a birthday dinner?
If you're looking for a good date restaurant near Sangsu Station, or a restaurant with a great mood near Hapjeong, I'd like to recommend Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza as a place worth remembering.

With great mood and great flavor coming together on a special day, it was an afternoon I got to wrap up happily :)
