Staff-grilled pork belly and kkodeulsal for a Gangnam weeknight BBQ

In short

Kkondae Kim Bujang Gogi-jip Gangnam Station Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Gangnam, Seoul, where staff grill the meat for you table-side. Arriving first at 5:40pm on a weekday, the writer saw the place fill to 80% capacity by 6pm and ordered one serving each of aged whole pork belly, aged whole pork neck, and kkodeulsal (chewy pork skirt meat), along with a generous banchan spread. A solid pick for a work dinner where you'd rather chat than watch the grill.

A Gangnam BBQ dinner spot already packed by 6pm on a weekday

Staff-grilled pork belly table setting at Kkondae Kim Bujang Gogi-jip Gangnam Station Branch

A great Gangnam Station Korean BBQ spot for a work dinner — I properly checked this place out. Kkondae Kim Bujang Gogi-jip is somewhere a lot of people go for Gangnam Station work dinners!! When I walked in around 5:40pm I was the first customer, but by 6pm, right as they started grilling my order, about 80% of the place had filled up with guests. It happened so fast it was honestly a little startling haha. Even on a weekday, Gangnam in Seoul is clearly hot and packed with people.

Since staff grill the meat here, you can eat in total comfort. The place is also spacious, so you get a fairly private meal. Let's get into the post properly.

Kkondae Kim Bujang Gogi-jip Gangnam Station Branch: exterior and location

Looks like there are branches nationwide, and the one I visited is close to Sinnonhyeon!

I heard a lot of people visit here as a Gangnam Station work dinner spot haha. So since I was on a business trip in Gangnam anyway, I stopped by for some delicious meat.

Storefront sign noting 200g per serving

The sign saying one serving is properly 200g caught my eye haha. These days you see 130g, 150g, 180g all over the place, so who knows what counts as one serving anymore~~

Inside the restaurant, seating, and group reservations

Now let's head inside. There was a typhoon this time, so it rained heavily all day, even in Seoul.

Entrance area of the BBQ restaurant on a rainy day

This spot is the furthest one in. Once the weather warms up a bit more, this seems like a nice place to sit, eat meat, and chat away. Might also work well as a Gangnam Station date spot?

Dining hall interior with widely spaced tables

The interior was plenty spacious and pleasant. The tables were spaced far enough apart that it didn't get in the way of conversation.

Large group tables set up inside the restaurant for work dinners
Wide, pleasant view of the restaurant's dining hall

If you're coming with a large group, booking ahead seems like it'd get you a better spot. The place is spacious, but it helps to reserve one of the bigger tables in advance!

Refrigerated space where meat is aged and stored

I took some photos of where they age and store the delicious meat haha.

Sign for the 'Kim Daeri's Punch-Out Kalguksu' side dish

Honestly, side dishes matter a lot at a grill house. Eating only meat can get greasy and you can tire of it, so having menu items that cut through that richness is essential. The 'Kim Daeri's Punch-Out Kalguksu' knife-cut noodles look like they'd have a clean, light broth that'd be excellent haha.

The menu and prices

Now let's go through the menu properly, photo by photo.

Menu board listing pork belly, pork neck, and pork jowl

Pork belly, pork neck, pork jowl, pork shoulder blade — the tasty cuts of pork are the stars here. And they've put together big set menus by mixing these cuts in the right combinations haha.

  • Axe Pork Tomahawk
  • Thousand-Layer Pork Jowl
  • Flower Marbled Rib-Eye-Style Pork Shoulder Blade
  • Aged Whole Pork Belly & Neck
  • Kkodeulsal (pork skirt meat)
  • Pork Skin

Some seriously solid menu items lined up here... The name 'pork tomahawk' already sounds pretty ferocious haha. At ₩73,000 for 850g, it's reasonably priced, and I bet a fair number of people order it.

Side menu board with fried rice, bibim guksu, and cold noodles

Fried rice, spicy mixed noodles, knife-cut noodles, cold noodles, spicy cold noodles, jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle) broth — the side menu is a complete lineup. The combo of 'Kim Gwajang's Explosive Bibim Guksu' spicy mixed noodles and 'Kim Daeri's Punch-Out Kalguksu' knife-cut noodles feels like an unbeatable pairing haha.

Highball menu board named after company job titles

Kim Bujang's Chivas Highball, Kim Gwajang's Jameson Highball, Kim Daeri's Jim Beam Highball (I'm guessing based on rank haha). It sort of seems like the price of the base spirit drops a little as you go down the corporate ladder..? Haha.

Trying one serving each of aged whole pork belly, aged whole pork neck, and kkodeulsal

  • Aged whole pork belly
  • Aged whole pork neck
  • Kkodeulsal
  • Terra beer

I really want to strongly recommend this place as a Gangnam Station work dinner spot, so let's get into it properly.

Generous basic banchan spread including squid and acorn jelly salad

My jaw dropped when the basic banchan spread came out. Squid, acorn jelly salad, grilled shiitake mushrooms, napa cabbage, what I think was sea squirt, onions, kimchi, and more — I think there'd be plenty of demand even if they sold this whole spread for ₩10,000 on its own. It felt like they'd put care into each dish, and it was genuinely delicious.

Table set with the basic side dishes

To try a range of things, I ordered one serving each of all three cuts. I was most excited for the kkodeulsal.

Do they actually grill the meat for you?

After setting up the hot charcoal, a staff member came out with the meat and grilled it skillfully. I really hate when meat gets burnt, but they grilled it just right, exactly as needed. I was genuinely so satisfied. Sometimes you run into places that grill things almost to a char, but this place absolutely never did that.

Pork belly and pork neck grilling over charcoal

My favorite cut, kkodeulsal, was cooking up nicely with a beautiful Maillard reaction happening on it.

Kkodeulsal browning nicely on the grill

Once nicely grilled, the meat was moved onto the upper part of the grill plate as shown in the photo above, so it stays warm without burning any further.

Fully grilled meat served alongside young napa cabbage

My verdict on this year's first kkodeulsal... genuinely delicious haha. That chewy first bite is the real charm, and I got the full experience of it. It's rare these days to get served al배추 (young napa cabbage) too, so it was nice to see it again and eat well haha.

A piece of pork neck topped with seafood salad

I topped the pork neck with what I think was a sea squirt salad and ate it together. The rich seafood aroma made the pork taste about three times better haha. This was a staff-grilled BBQ spot I found while scouting Gangnam Station work dinner locations.
