Choryang Station hagfish grill on a rainy day with Mom: Gyeongbuksan

Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo (경북산꼼장어) is a grilled hagfish (kkomjangeo) restaurant on Choryang-ro, near Choryang Station in Dong-gu, Busan. On a rainy day the writer went back with her mom for a second visit and ordered the half salt-grilled, half sauce-grilled medium for 2 people (55,000 won). This time she also had the 2,500 won fried rice she had been too full for last time, wrapped in seaweed. Thanks to big salt-grilled pieces dipped in sesame oil sauce and the fried rice finish, Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo is the hagfish spot a Busan local ranks number one.

Seomyeon butter-grill bar in Busan: fist-size scallops, Yuumangju

Yuumangju Seomyeon Branch is a Korean pub-restaurant on the 2nd floor above Sseolpa branch no. 2 on Seomyeon 2beon-ga in Busan. The blogger ordered Yuumangju's signature butter-grilled cuttlefish, beef intestine (daechang) and scallops (35,900 won) and a cheesy Buldak egg pancake (14,000 won). With the complimentary garlic baguette, they finished two bottles of drinks. Fist-size scallops and friendly staff make Yuumangju Seomyeon Branch a bar worth recommending for its drinking food.

Nampo-dong bar a Seomyeon regular picks: Cheese Jjusaeu, Bisam, Budan

Budan Nampo Branch is a Korean pub on the 2nd floor of the Miryang Pork Soup (Miryang Dwaeji Gukbap) building on Gwangbok-ro in Jung-gu, Busan. A regular who has been to Budan in Seomyeon about five times went to Budan Nampo Branch for a second round and ordered Cheese Jjusaeu (cheesy baby octopus and shrimp) for 33,000 won and Bisam (bibim noodles with pork belly) for 15,000 won, with 2 bottles of soju. Big shrimp, thin-sliced pork, chewy baby octopus and a generous Bisam portion made Budan Nampo Branch a satisfying spot for drinks and bar food.

Gwangalli bar in Busan: ₩35,000 autumn gizzard shad sashimi, Maenggu

Maenggu Pocha Gwang-an Main Branch is a retro-style pocha (Korean pub) in Namcheon-dong, Suyeong, Busan, near Geumnyeonsan Station and Gwangalli. On a second-round visit, the writer ordered gizzard shad sashimi (35,000 won), which came sliced whole in a generous, nutty-tasting portion, and butter-grilled crab (26,500 won), which was plump and came with rice balls. For plenty of autumn gizzard shad, Maenggu Pocha's sashimi is good value for money.

Gwangalli Korean BBQ date with a Gwangan Bridge view: Haean Sutbul

Haean Sutbul Galbi Gwangalli Main Branch (해안숯불갈비) is a charcoal-grilled galbi (Korean ribs) restaurant on Namcheonbada-ro in Suyeong, Busan, facing Gwangalli Beach with a direct view of Gwangan Bridge. The writer booked ahead for a day-off date and ordered the pork galbi set for 2–3 people (2 portions raw galbi plus 2 portions marinated pork galbi). The writer also enjoyed the grilled pork tail from the review event and the japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) refilled by kiosk. Verdict: the raw galbi tastes purely of the meat and the marinated pork galbi is sweet and savory, making Haean Sutbul Galbi the writer's favorite BBQ spot in Gwangalli.

BBQ date night in Seomyeon, Busan: steamed egg and naengmyeon at Don J

Don J Busan Seomyeon is a pork neck and pork belly BBQ restaurant and bar, grilled on cauldron lids, about a 5-minute walk from Exit 7 of Seomyeon Station in Busan. On a weekday at 9pm, the writer and her boyfriend ordered 600g of pork neck and belly for ₩38,000, yeolmu naengmyeon (young radish kimchi cold noodles) for ₩7,000 and Daepo-dong steamed egg for ₩5,900, plus soju and beer, with 10 sauces and 6 side dishes and no table charge. Don J Busan Seomyeon's staff grill the meat all the way through and hand out ice cream after you pay, making it a good late-night spot for drinks and Korean BBQ.

Busan hagfish restaurant for a 9:30pm second round: Gyeongbuksan

Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo is a long-running hagfish (kkomjangeo) grill restaurant on Choryang-ro in Dong-gu, Busan, a short walk from Busan Station. Arriving at 9:30pm for a second round, the small size could not be split, so the order was a medium (2 servings) done half salt and half sauce, with the sauce made extra spicy. The hagfish at Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo came out thick and in such generous portions that even a late-night drinking snack was filling.

Sashimi course 500m from Busan Station, Jung-gu: Ppong Sashimi

Ppong Sashimi is a Japanese sashimi restaurant in Jungang-dong 4-ga, Jung-gu, Busan, between Busan Station and Jungang Station. Two diners ordered the 60,000-won-per-person assorted sashimi course, which began with cold boiled pork and tuna tartare and continued through sushi, red sea bream, salmon and flounder sashimi, tuna, abalone, scallops and shrimp, a hot pot, fried shrimp, grilled fish, and finally albap (rice with roe) with cod clear soup. Seats at Ppong Sashimi are partitioned by dividers, so two people can work through the whole course in private comfort.

Department store lunch in Nampo-dong, 17,500-won set: Daidokoro

Daidokoro Lotte Department Store Gwangbok Branch is a Japanese home-style restaurant on the 10th floor of Lotte Department Store Gwangbok in Jung-gu, Busan. The writer, who works nearby, came alone on a weekday lunch break and ordered the chicken nanban set for 17,500 won at the kiosk, which came with karaage in onion sauce, creamy curry sauce and a milk pudding to finish. Eating solo felt comfortable at Daidokoro, and tables turned over quickly, making it a solid department-store lunch.

Jeonpo sashimi bar where staff peel live shrimp, Busan: Rigo Susan

Rigo Susan is a sashimi restaurant and bar near Exit 8 of Jeonpo Station, by the Jeonpo Cafe Street in Busanjin, Busan. The writer ordered the live raw shrimp platter (₩49,000), and because she can't handle live shrimp herself, a staff member peeled each one by hand and fried the leftover shrimp heads on the spot. With plump, sweet raw shrimp and a generous spread of stew-style side dishes, Rigo Susan is a solid pick for drinks in Jeonpo.

Seomyeon galbijjim restaurant where the owner debones ribs: Sinchon

Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch is a spicy galbijjim (braised ribs) restaurant in Seomyeon, Busanjin, Busan that has cooked nothing but spicy braised ribs in the same spot for 20 years. Spicy galbijjim costs 14,000 won per person, the writer ordered spice level 3, and the owner came over to cut the seafood potato pancake and strip every rib off the bone, while soup and acorn jelly arrived as the basic side dishes. Worth a visit if you want clean heat without the heavy gochujang aftertaste.

Toseong Station pork ribs with free steamed egg, Busan: Bueongi Maeul

Bueongi Maeul is a pre-grilled pork ribs restaurant in Jung-gu, Busan, about 537m from Exit 1 of Toseong Station. Without ordering any alcohol, the writer had 800g of pork ribs, a small pork doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and three bowls of rice, and every table that orders ribs gets free gyeranjjim (steamed egg), which filled the table edge to edge. Because the ribs arrive pre-grilled they are easy to finish on the grill, and the seasoning is neither too sweet nor too salty, so Bueongi Maeul never feels heavy.
