Packed even on a Monday: the meat showcase at the entrance

I visited on a Monday and the place was still quite busy, but the restaurant is so large it didn't feel chaotic. I think of Wonangmyeongga as the No. 1 Korean beef restaurant in Daejeon.

The first thing you notice walking into Wonangmyeongga is the meat showcase. Like a butcher-shop-style restaurant, you can look at and choose the meat yourself, which made deciding what to eat part of the fun. Just looking at the meat in the case, you could tell how good the quality was.

What we chose that day was the assorted special cuts platter — ₩139,830.

Wonangmyeongga Dunsan City Hall Branch is located in Dunsan-dong near Daejeon City Hall, making it a convenient spot for meals with friends or company dinners.

Assorted special cuts, 139,830 won, grilled over charcoal

The assorted special cuts platter at Wonangmyeongga Dunsan City Hall Branch is ₩139,830 and lets you try several different Korean beef cuts at once, which I liked more than just having a single cut.

Seeing the meat up close, the color was a good bright red and the marbling was well distributed, so I had high expectations even before grilling.

Grilling the meat over charcoal reminded me that beef really does taste best cooked over charcoal.

The meat quality was good, so it was fun that each cut had a slightly different texture — nothing was tough or dry, and it was delicious throughout.

Grilling different cuts of Korean beef

When you're eating meat, quality matters most, and overall the condition of the meat was great that day — well worth coming for Korean beef.

Hanwoo beef soup and water naengmyeon: how good were they?

After the meat, we ordered two bowls of rice at ₩2,000, water naengmyeon (cold noodles) at ₩6,000, and beef soup at Wonangmyeongga Dunsan City Hall Branch. You can't skip the meal course after grilling meat.

We also had the beef soup together, and it was really delicious — better than expected.

We also ordered water naengmyeon. The noodles were on the thinner side, and they went well with the broth for a clean finish. After a meal of meat, which can feel heavy, the cool and light flavor cleared the palate nicely. Rather than feeling like a side-dish naengmyeon at a barbecue place, it tasted as clean and true-to-basics as noodles from a dedicated naengmyeon restaurant, which I really liked.

What's on the self-serve bar, and how is the service?

I also really liked the self-serve bar. It was convenient to help myself to side dishes and accompaniments as needed, and nice not to feel awkward asking for more sides while eating meat. The self-serve bar was kept clean and well-stocked, which made picking and choosing items fun.

By the time we left, the meat showcase had nearly emptied out.

Above all, the staff were really kind that day. Even during a busy time, the service was friendly, which made the meal feel good throughout.

Free omija, green plum drinks and coffee after the meal

After finishing the meal at Wonangmyeongga Dunsan City Hall Branch, there are complimentary drinks like omija and green plum available, plus coffee. Having a refreshing glass of omija or green plum and then coffee after eating meat made for a satisfying finish.

Wonangmyeongga Dunsan City Hall Branch was a solid choice for a hearty meal with good-quality meat. The staff were kind, the meat quality was good, and the beef soup in particular was delicious — I left in a good mood.
