Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is a Western restaurant at 25 Seogwangju-ro in Seo-gu, Gwangju, about a 3-minute walk from Uniqlo Seogwangju. It's gotten chilly lately and I had nothing to wear (very much a crisis!) (fashionista Ms. Jeong, panicking). So on a Sunday evening we headed to Uniqlo.

We stopped by Uniqlo Seogwangju to buy some clothes and then popped over for a simple dinner — Bueokgan, right near Uniqlo!

It was Sunday evening and there wasn't a single other party in the place, which actually made it nice and quiet.

Such a tidy, well-kept interior! I've actually been here twice before — once with my friend Cheongmo, and once when a friend from Gangwon-do visited Gwangju — and both times the food was really good. So this was a repeat visit ⭐️

With no crowd on a Sunday night, it felt like we'd rented the whole place out and got to snag the popular window seat.

The greenery outside blends nicely with the window-side atmosphere. Bueokgan is a solidly reliable restaurant in the Sangmu district. The interior is clean and doesn't feel cheap, yet the prices aren't intimidating either. So it works fine for an important occasion, and it's even better suited for a casual, comfortable get-together. Being right on the road also means it's easy to find and easy to park, which is a big plus. It's been open for quite a while now and still keeps things running well — I guess people's taste doesn't really change.

What a family of three ordered at Bueokgan, and what it cost

We ordered the salad, sweet potato fries, abalone risotto, and jambon pizza.

Even the dishware is custom-made. Seeing Bueokgan branches all over the country, it seems like it's become a genuinely distinctive brand at this point.

Mushroom grill salad, 16,000 won

The mushroom grill salad (₩16,000) is loaded with fresh mushrooms and vegetables and it's so good. If you like mushrooms, don't overthink it, just order this one. It's not just a pile of greens — the smoky flavor of the grilled mushrooms really wakes up your appetite from the start.

Sweet potato fries, 8,000 won

You have to get the sweet potato fries here (₩8,000). Sweet, salty, and crispy — perfect for cleansing your palate before the main dishes, so I order them every time. They have a different charm from regular fries, so I keep reaching for more. But out of a guilty conscience about the calories, I try to only eat a little, which is always a shame.

Jambon pizza, 24,000 won

The jambon pizza (₩24,000) wasn't my pick, but it had plenty of cheese piled on, and the jambon wasn't too salty or too bland — really good. The crust wasn't too thick either, nice and crispy, with a flavor that oddly kept pulling me back for more.

Abalone cream risotto, 20,000 won — the family's unanimous favorite

The abalone cream risotto (₩20,000) has a very familiar flavor, but it's packed with abalone aroma, so every bite seemed to spread that abalone fragrance. Out of everything we ordered today, this was my favorite. The savory richness of the abalone innards cuts right through the creaminess, so I couldn't put my spoon down.

My family agreed too — the risotto was the best of the night.

Overall, everything we ordered was solid, no misses. This is a good go-to spot if you want a clean, satisfying meal in Sangmu.

Is Bueokgan Sangmu Branch worth a family dinner? Final verdict

My subjective take: Bueokgan Sangmu Branch has a clean, upscale-feeling interior without prices that feel intimidating, making it a great fit for both important occasions and casual gatherings. Being right on the main road with easy parking is also a big plus for accessibility. Everything we ate this time had deep flavor without being overly heavy or intense, which won over even the pickier adult palates. Beyond the food and atmosphere, the staff's genuinely friendly attitude — never losing their smile all the way through service — made the whole meal feel really good right to the end!! If you're looking for a clean, dependable restaurant in the Sangmu district, this is one I'd recommend without hesitation.
