Boneless chicken stir-fry eaten on Yesan Market's square: Sijang
In short
Sijang Dakbokkeum (시장닭볶음) is a takeout-focused restaurant inside Yesan Permanent Market in Yesan, Chungnam, that sells just one dish: shishito pepper chicken stir-fry. The writer ordered the boneless shishito chicken stir-fry (₩25,000) at the kiosk to take home, but the shishito aroma won out and they ate it right away at a table on the market square; the heat is about Shin Ramyun level, so even people who don't handle spice well can enjoy it. Sijang Dakbokkeum's stir-fry is good enough that next time you'll want to add extra shishito peppers and every topping.

Yesan Market in Chungnam has become famous as a travel stop packed with food, right? The Chungnam Yesan Permanent Market, remodeled through the Yesan Market revival project, sells so many tasty things that choosing is hard. Of all of them, here's one that's both delicious and easy to enjoy: Sijang Dakbokkeum (시장닭볶음), a chicken stir-fry spot.
Where is Sijang Dakbokkeum in Yesan Market?
Sijang Dakbokkeum is inside Chungnam Yesan Permanent Market, in an alley connected to the square. You just head from the square into the alley, so it wasn't hard to find.

Parking at Yesan Permanent Market is free
Parking at the market is free, which made it convenient. The lot is roomy and right in front of the market, so the walk is short, which I liked too.
Follow the alley in and you'll see the trendy Sijang Dakbokkeum sign. The interior has a hip feel that breaks the usual "traditional market" image.

How do you order at Sijang Dakbokkeum, and is there a wait?
You pick your menu at the kiosk and enter your phone number, and the order is done. When the food is ready, you get an alert on your phone.
I ordered, wandered around Yesan Market, then picked up, so the wait never felt long. It's mostly takeout and you can pay and order by kiosk, so there was no line inside the shop. I think the food took about 10 minutes.

Sijang Dakbokkeum menu and prices
- Shishito pepper chicken stir-fry ₩25,000 (bone-in and boneless same price)
- (Topping) Extra shishito peppers ₩2,000
- (Topping) Mozzarella cheese ₩3,000
- (Topping) Bunmoja (flat rice cake) ₩2,000
- (Topping) Vienna sausage ₩2,000
- (Topping) Quail eggs ₩2,000
Sijang Dakbokkeum sells a single menu item: shishito pepper chicken stir-fry. You can choose bone-in or boneless, and the price is the same. Boneless is sometimes pricier elsewhere, so I liked that it's equal here.

You can add mozzarella cheese, bunmoja, Vienna sausage and quail eggs as toppings. If you love shishito peppers, you can add extra peppers too, so just order them when you pay.

Where Sijang Dakbokkeum's ingredients come from
See the origin labels? Everything except the boneless chicken is domestic. It seems they use produce grown in Yesan. It's a place that mainly uses Korean ingredients, so you can eat with confidence.

Is Sijang Dakbokkeum's shishito chicken stir-fry very spicy?
You can't adjust the spice level; there's just one. The heat is about what you'd get eating Shin Ramyun, so most people can enjoy it without any real like-or-dislike split.
Even I, who can't handle spicy food well, ate it happily, so it was easy to enjoy.

Boneless shishito chicken stir-fry, eaten right on the market square
I ordered the shishito pepper chicken stir-fry (boneless). Sijang Dakbokkeum is mainly takeout, so it's good to take out and eat at the square tables, and also good to pack up and eat at home before you head back.

I got it as takeout. I planned to eat it at home for dinner, but the smell of the chicken stir-fry pulled me in and I opened the lid right away, haha.

I grabbed one of the tables on the Yesan Permanent Market square and dug into the freshly made stir-fry. Wow! The moment I opened the container, the shishito aroma hit me, and it smelled so good. Eating the chicken together with the peppers was sooo much tastier than chicken alone. If I visit again, I'd add extra shishito peppers.

Having tried it, I get why they named it shishito chicken stir-fry. The star isn't the chicken but the shishito peppers; they were that appealing.

Rice cakes included, toppings next time
There are rice cakes (tteok) in the stir-fry too, which were nice to eat along with it. Maybe because it's freshly made, the rice cakes were chewy and delicious. Sadly I didn't add any toppings, but if I buy it again, I'd add every topping.

You can't adjust the spice, but the sauce is moderately spicy and savory, which I liked. It tasted like it would go well with any topping. It seems good as a side dish with rice, and good for making chicken-and-rice (chi-bap) too.

How do you reheat Sijang Dakbokkeum takeout?
The instructions say to reheat the shishito chicken stir-fry in a pot over medium-low heat, or microwave it with the container lid slightly open. The container they give you is microwave-safe, which was convenient.

If you're looking for Yesan Market food or a takeout favorite in Yesan Market, I recommend Sijang Dakbokkeum.
