Seoul Japanese restaurant near Gyeongbokgung for a date: Hurato

Today I want to introduce a Gwanghwamun date spot my girlfriend and I visited last weekend. It's Hurato Sikdang Gyeongbokgung Main Branch, and if you're looking for a restaurant date course near Gwanghwamun Station, this one's worth keeping in mind.

The address is B1, Unit 63, Royal Building Arcade, 19 Saemunan-ro 5-gil, roughly between Gyeongbokgung Station and Gwanghwamun Station, so it was easy to get to from either direction. We found it by searching for a lunch spot near Gyeongbokgung while out for a stroll around the palace, and beyond the location, the story behind the name really caught my attention.

The name Hurato comes from the Japanese word ふらっと, an adverb meaning "suddenly, on a whim." Apparently three young owners took an impulsive trip to Tokyo one day, fell in love with the flavors and cozy atmosphere of small local eateries there, and opened this place to recreate that feeling near Gyeongbokgung. Once I heard that, I got even more curious about the food.

We ordered one each of the signature menu items, gyukatsu and steki sets. Both were priced similarly at ₩19,500, which made them perfect for a couple to split and share.

The gyukatsu came out rare, meant to be grilled to your liking on the tabletop brazier. The outside was crisply fried while the inside kept its soft texture intact, and it was fun being able to control the doneness ourselves.

They say it's aged using their own method, and I could definitely taste a savory depth different from regular donkatsu (breaded pork cutlet). The shredded cabbage, radish sprouts, and pickled peppers served alongside cut through the richness nicely and paired well with the gyukatsu.

The steki set was yakiniku-style, seared only on the surface. The juicy tenderness came through with every bite, filling the mouth with a rich, savory aroma, and the accompanying shredded cabbage and pickles cleaned the palate well.

The atmosphere was great for a date. The dark-toned interior with softly falling lighting made for pretty photos, and the cozy vibe good for conversation matched the meaning of the name really well.

It seemed like a lot of office workers stop by on weekday lunches, and on weekends we noticed couples like us dropping in after a walk around Gyeongbokgung.

Parking and reservation tips for Hurato Sikdang

One tip on parking: the Royal Building's own lot isn't very big, so finding a spot on weekends can be tight. When we arrived it was already full, so we used a nearby public parking lot instead — but since it's easily walkable from either Gyeongbokgung or Gwanghwamun Station, taking public transit is also a good option.

And if you're planning to order both menu items like we did, I'd recommend booking ahead. Lunch hours and weekend dinners tend to have a wait, so reserving a time slot in advance means you can enjoy your meal without any waiting around. We had a reservation, so we were seated right away when we arrived, which let us make the most of our date.

Given the fun of grilling it yourself at the table and the quality of the aged meat, this feels like it's well worth it as a special-occasion date spot.
