Daegu Korean restaurant menu picks after trying every dish: Hyangtaek
In short
Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is a Korean rice-meal restaurant near Gyeongbuk University Hospital Station in Jung-gu, Daegu, just off Kim Kwang-seok Street. After working through the entire menu on earlier visits, this time the order was the chamnamul squid rice bowl at 13,000 won and the yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef bibimbap) at 14,000 won, and both bowls were cleared with a sister. For a spicy stir-fry go with the chamnamul squid rice bowl; for something mild and clean, the mackerel gondre rice or the yukhoe bibimbap is the better pick.

Inside Hyangtaek Daebong Branch: open kitchen and well-spaced tables

The Hyangtaek Daebong Branch interior is done up in a cozy wood-tone mood, and it's genuinely spacious and comfortable! It's a 100% open kitchen so you can eat with total trust ෆ

There are plenty of big tables, big enough for group gatherings! It's always packed on weekends, but I went on an early weekday and managed to snag an empty seat 🙂↕️

And by the window, there are two-person seats like this.

Overall it looks really clean. 🫢 The wide table spacing is really nice too. The whole menu feels neat, so I'd recommend it for a family meal out too!
𖤐 They have high chairs, so families with babies could eat comfortably too.
What we ordered: chamnamul squid rice bowl and yukhoe bibimbap

There are five main dishes. The signature items are mackerel gondre rice and eggplant doenjang rice bowl, but today I picked ones I hadn't tried yet! (I'll sum up the traits of each menu below. 🤤)

· ᴏʀᴅᴇʀ ʟɪsᴛ · ¹ Chamnamul squid rice bowl 13.0 ² Yukhoe bibimbap 14.0

Roasted gim (seaweed sheets), jeotgal (salted seafood), pickles, and even a soybean paste soup! The basic side dishes were set out very neatly, and the seasoning and raw egg for the yukhoe bibimbap also came out.

I love that they give one side dish per person, and each bowl comes out generously full. 🫢

Chamnamul squid rice bowl, 13,000 won: how spicy is it?
¹ Chamnamul squid rice bowl 13.0
When I ordered the chamnamul (short-leaf water dropwort) squid rice bowl, they asked if it was okay since the recipe recently changed and it's now quite spicy! They said it's about as spicy as Yeolramyeon, so I just said go for it. Honestly I don't really know how spicy Yeolramyeon is... but as long as it's not Buldak-level, I'm fine(?)
But once I tried it, it was moderately spicy with a ton of chamnamul piled on, and the fragrance was insane(;) It was just so good? Glad I ordered it.. 😛 The squid was also tender with zero fishy taste. The seasoning is on the spicier side, and I loved how kick-y it was!

The sauce tastes like a tasty spicy stir-fried baby octopus-style seasoning, and there are bean sprouts mixed in underneath, so it eats like a bibimbap and is so good. Even my picky sister tried mine and said it was clean and delicious!

Yukhoe bibimbap, 14,000 won: sweet ssamjang-style sauce
² Yukhoe bibimbap 14.0
Fresh lettuce and yukhoe (raw seasoned beef) together — of course it's delicious! 🫢 You mix it with a sauce that tastes like ssamjang plus gochujang. The seasoning has a slightly sweet edge that pairs really well with the yukhoe. My sister, a die-hard yukhoe fan, orders this every time we come 🤍
A raw egg comes on the side too, so you can add it to your taste.

A glossy, shiny bowl of yukhoe bibimbap — my sister finished hers completely and said it was so satisfying. Seriously recommend it when you want a filling meal!

A clean, delicious Korean restaurant near Gyeongbuk University Hospital Station — Hyangtaek. This is my nth revisit here, so if you're craving Korean food, go check it out :> To wrap up, here are my subjective notes on each dish.
[ Menu traits ]
- Yukhoe bibimbap: sweet ssamjang-style seasoning with fresh yukhoe
- Eggplant doenjang rice bowl: fragrant chives, eggplant, and nutty doenjang seasoning
- Herring roe bibim noodles: sweetish with perilla oil, plus loads of chadolbagi (thinly sliced beef brisket)
- Mackerel gondre rice: clean and mild mackerel paired with soy sauce
- Chamnamul squid rice bowl: spicy, thick seasoning with fragrant minari
If you're into mild and clean flavors, I highly recommend the mackerel gondre rice or the yukhoe bibimbap 🥄 If you're into spicy stir-fries, try the chamnamul squid rice bowl -
