Full-house weekend dinner in Suwon: spicy octopus at Daseon Kalguksu
In short
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Hyanggyo-ro, a 9-minute walk from Suwon Station in Gyeonggi, serving kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), suyuk (boiled pork) and bulnakji-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried octopus). On a weekend evening visit the dining room was full, and the order was plate suyuk and bulnakji-bokkeum, with barley rice, geotjeori (fresh-tossed kimchi) and fresh vegetable salad served as basic sides, plus a barley rice refill. What makes Daseon Kalguksu memorable is mixing that barley rice straight into the smoky octopus sauce.

Today I'm talking about a Suwon Station restaurant that's kept its footing no matter how the neighborhood around the station has changed — Daseon Kalguksu! Suwon locals will already know this one. I'm not from Suwon myself, but whenever I'm passing through the station I can't find anywhere better, so I keep coming back. A genuine Suwon Station favorite!
Where is Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, and what are its hours and parking?
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is on the 1st floor of 48 Hyanggyo-ro, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, a 9-minute walk from Suwon Station. Easy to reach on foot, but there's no parking if you're driving, so you'll need to use a nearby lot.

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch / Daily 10:30–22:00
Here are the opening hours! You can feel the years in that sign — proof of how long this place has held down the street! I really love a restaurant with that kind of history. And this is even the main branch, which I love too. Nothing like trusting the original location.

How long is the weekend evening wait, and what's on the menu?
I went on a weekend evening and the place was completely full! It looks like there's a wait during peak hours. Since they serve lunch, dinner, and even late-night meals, it seems really popular. Still, because the menu is noodle-based, tables seem to turn over fast.

The menu has a good range — kalguksu, suyuk, bulnakji-bokkeum, and mandu (dumplings), plus set menus for bigger groups. A lot of people seem to go for kalguksu with mandu, or with haemul pajeon (seafood pancake), and the nakji-bokkeum is also popular.

Barley rice, geotjeori kimchi and the plate suyuk
Daseon Kalguksu serves barley rice, kimchi, and fresh vegetable salad as standard sides, and that geotjeori-style kimchi is delicious even on its own! Perfect with the suyuk too — honestly the reason to add a plate of suyuk, haha. Good kimchi is hard to find these days, but this place had me sold from the kimchi alone.

This is the plate suyuk — look at that color! Genuinely tender, melt-in-your-mouth pork, and with that great geotjeori kimchi it's the best combo. The suyuk is delicious on its own already, and paired with the kimchi, nobody's walking away unimpressed!

One bite of barley rice, kimchi, and suyuk together and you'll become a regular here, lol. A truly winning combo!! A reliably good pairing, but the tender suyuk with the tasty kimchi takes it to another level.

Barley rice refills are free at Daseon Kalguksu
The barley rice comes topped with fresh vegetable salad, and mixing in the sauce makes it delicious all on its own! Now I understand why there's sauce on every table. I finished a whole bowl and got a refill, lol — turns out the barley rice refills too! The owner's generosity is amazing~~! A restaurant this generous needs to be spread far and wide.

How smoky is Daseon's bulnakji-bokkeum, and how big is the portion?
Here comes the bulnakji-bokkeum! The moment it arrived, that smoky charred aroma hit — seriously smoky and amazing octopus stir-fry! And the octopus was so plump, honestly moving~~haha. If the octopus pieces are tiny, I don't even count it as a proper nakji-bokkeum, but this place is different. The portion is huge too — two people will be stuffed!

The bulnakji-bokkeum also has onion, cabbage, and chives mixed in, soaking up all that smoky sauce — so good! Even the vegetables play a big part in how tasty this dish is. When the veggies are this good too, there's really nothing not to like.

Mix the barley rice into the bulnakji-bokkeum sauce
I love mixing rice into this bulnakji-bokkeum because the sauce is just incredibly good! With the vegetables and octopus mixed in too, it's the perfect rice combo. A flavor I keep thinking about, haha.

The sauce is seriously insane... You absolutely must mix it with rice!! See that color?? Do it, mix it in! One bite with the vegetables together and it's amazing! How can smoky flavor and sauce be this good!! Not mixing rice into this would be a crime, lol.

Apparently this place has been on TV too!? I don't know about that, but my taste buds have already confirmed it, haha.
Kal-nakji next time: why Daseon Kalguksu is worth a Suwon Station dinner
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is also famous for its kal-nakji (noodles with octopus), so I'm planning to try that next time! But honestly, when I think of that smoky nakji-bokkeum, I'll probably end up ordering it again, lol. Anyway, if you're looking for a Korean restaurant near Suwon Station, I highly recommend Daseon Kalguksu!
