In short

Dongyang Baekban is a hanok-converted Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, cooking home-style dishes in a beef-bone herbal broth. A lunch here with mom meant the eunyi mushroom black rice-crust chicken stew for 38,000 won, with the chewy mushrooms and tender chicken wrapped in fresh chives, plus a lucky-draw game before paying at the kiosk. Dongyang Baekban suits anyone who wants a mild, comforting Korean meal in Gyeongju.

Inside a hanok converted into a restaurant

Tiled-roof building and yard of Dongyang Baekban

It's genuinely a converted hanok (traditional Korean house) in Gyeongju, so there's even a front yard — all green and lush. Gyeongju is full of tiled-roof houses, so it has such a nice, old-world charm.

Table seating in a hanok room with a sliding door

Tables are set up in each room of the hanok, closed off with sliding doors, so it felt like getting a little taste of what living in a traditional Korean house is like, haha.

Eunyi mushroom black rice-crust chicken stew, 38,000 won

The recommended dish we ordered at Dongyang Baekban was the eunyi mushroom black rice-crust chicken stew (₩38,000). A black rice-crust chicken stew simmered long with healthy ingredients, generously loaded with mushrooms — really tasty.

It's a chicken stew with eunyi mushrooms, golden enoki mushrooms, and ginseng. This was my first time trying eunyi mushrooms, and the texture is fantastic — nice and chewy. Mushrooms are supposed to be good for you, so eating this healthy food gave me extra energy to keep enjoying our Gyeongju trip. Since we hadn't eaten anything all morning, this lunch tasted absolutely amazing! Mom really enjoyed it too. It seems like they only use fresh, quality ingredients.

The stew pot itself is stylish too. What really surprised me was the chicken. It's so delicious!!!! Why is it so tender? Not sure if they only use chicken thigh, but it's incredibly soft.

Why chive wraps match the chicken so well

Wrapping it with chives made it even tastier. I found myself wondering, can we get a refill of chives??? Such a perfect-match vegetable..!

Load up on plenty of chives when you eat, seriously 🍃🍃🍃💚

How to cook the black rice-crust chicken stew at the table

Dongyang Baekban's chicken stew comes out almost fully cooked from the kitchen. The broth is rich and well-seasoned, on the salty side. We let it simmer once more before eating, then kept it on low heat to fully cook the rice crust inside while we picked out the other ingredients to eat.

As we ate, we found the black rice crust inside — it's got a great nutty flavor.

Dongyang Baekban uses a beef-bone herbal broth. It's a Gyeongju Korean restaurant known for using this beef-bone herbal broth in every dish.

The interior has such a quiet, old-fashioned feel — you really get the full hanok atmosphere here. The herbal medicine ingredients that go into the broth were displayed and stored neatly too.

A home-style meal that feels like medicine

Interior corners of the hanok worth exploring

True to their slogan that rice is medicine, the food felt so neat and proper, and packed full of healthy ingredients — you can just tell it's good for you, right? There's also fun in wandering around every corner of the house :)

The lucky-draw game at Dongyang Baekban

Turns out Dongyang Baekban also runs a lucky-draw event? Win, and you get a discount on your food! First prize is a whopping ₩40,000 off!! First, second, third, fourth, fifth prize — so cute, haha. Everyone, go grab some luck with the draw!

Dongyang Baekban menu and how to order at the kiosk

You can easily order the menu through the kiosk. Lots of people were also ordering the dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) and Korean beef hot pot. Next time I want to try the dakbokkeumtang too — with cooking skills this good, the seasoning is guaranteed to be delicious!! They served barley tea as the house water, so even the water here tastes good — you can feel the attention to detail! It kind of felt like visiting grandma's house, haha.

Is Dongyang Baekban worth a visit?

If you're looking for a good Korean restaurant in Gyeongju, I really do recommend Dongyang Baekban. The chicken is so tender and fresh. Soft, never dry, so it works great as a rice side dish, and it's just as good as a drinking snack.
