Gyeongju Korean restaurant, mild tripe hot pot and cold beef mulhoe

In short

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, set inside an old house where every table sits in its own room-like space. Summer beef mulhoe (chilled raw beef and vegetables in cold broth) costs 12,000 won, beef tripe hot pot 35,000 won and pollock roe rice 5,500 won, and the hot pot's heat stayed around Shin Ramyun level, easy even for a spice-shy friend. Hi, it's Yunjjok ٩(๑>ꇴ< ๑)و

While wandering around Hwangridan-gil on a Gyeongju trip, I stopped at this Korean restaurant for dinner 🫶 It's right in the center of Hwangridan-gil so it fit perfectly into the day's route, and best of all the space is built into an old house, giving it a totally different vibe from other restaurants 🥹 They have all kinds of Korean dishes, but since Gyeongju basically equals beef mulhoe, I ordered it without a second thought 🤤

Why Dongyang Baekban on Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil is worth a dinner

  • Great location right in the center of Hwangridan-gil
  • Quiet, atmospheric space built into an old house
  • Every table feels like its own separate room
  • Menu ranges from beef mulhoe to tripe hot pot
  • Convenient with high chairs and Naver reservations

Old-house rooms: what the seating at Dongyang Baekban is like

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch keeps the original structure of an old house, so every table is separated like its own private room. With the hanok atmosphere and soft lighting, it really felt like being on a Gyeongju trip 🥹🥹 It seems like a great spot for small group gatherings or family trips.

The basic side dishes are seasoned bean sprouts, braised soybeans, braised garlic scapes, and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) — four Korean side dishes!!

Four basic side dishes including seasoned bean sprouts

Summer beef mulhoe, 12,000 won, with a full scoop of yukhoe

Dongyang's summer special beef mulhoe (raw beef and vegetables in cold broth) is ₩12,000. Gyeongju food basically means beef mulhoe, can't skip it 🥹🥹 It comes loaded with cool mulhoe broth, fresh yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), vegetables, and even egg garnish.

Such cute little round pieces of yukhoe!! It comes as a big, generous scoop, so I never ran short of yukhoe until the very end.

A round scoop of yukhoe served on top

With the cold, tangy broth combined with the savory yukhoe, it felt totally different from a typical mulhoe. The broth had a clean, not-too-strong flavor so the beef and other ingredients didn't get lost — it was delicious. If you want to try something different from the usual in Gyeongju, this is the dish I'd recommend 🫶

Beef tripe hot pot, 35,000 won: how spicy is it?

The beef tripe hot pot is ₩35,000, and it comes out with rich broth piled high with ingredients 🫶

It's loaded with all kinds of ingredients — not just gopchang (small intestine) and daechang (large intestine) but also beef, glass noodles, shrimp, potato, hand-pulled dumpling dough, and mushrooms!! As I kept digging through, more and more ingredients turned up, it was basically a treasure hunt lolololol

Plump daechang inside the tripe hot pot

⭐️The highlight of the tripe hot pot⭐️ Just look at the plump, chewy daechang before you go. I'm usually not a fan of daechang's fatty texture, but here the stew seasoning soaked in so well that eating it with the broth made it savory instead. I was worried about the spice level since I went with a spice-sensitive friend, but it landed at just about Shin Ramyun level, so even they enjoyed it 👍

Pollock roe rice, 5,500 won, a must with the tripe hot pot

The pollock roe rice I ordered as a side was ₩5,500! It comes as a set — a bowl of seaweed flakes, scallions, sesame seeds, and pollock roe (a kind of nobi-bap?). Add the sesame oil on the table, mix in the rice, and shake it all together to finish!!

The pollock roe was studded throughout, giving it great umami, and the fragrant scallions worked really well with it.

The rich hot pot broth and savory pollock roe rice went together better than I expected 🥹🥹 ⭐️If you order the tripe hot pot, the pollock roe rice is essential⭐️ It's tasty on its own, but eating it together with the tripe hot pot is Yunjjok's pick!!

Everyone left satisfied — a great Gyeongju find!! We ate well 🫶 If you want to feel the vibe of a Gyeongju trip on Hwangridan-gil while eating a filling Korean meal, I'd recommend this unique Gyeongju restaurant set inside an old converted house — Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch 🫶
