Kid-friendly Korean restaurant in Gyeongju's Hwangnidan-gil, Naver

In short

Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant Hwangnam Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju serving seven dishes on one table, centered on a Cheomseongdae-shaped crab fried rice. Booking a day ahead on Naver and arriving right at opening, the writer ordered the Cheomseongdae 7-dish set and a Gyeongju hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef bibimbap) — plenty for 3-4 people though listed for two. A great stop with kids on a Gyeongju trip.

Wanting a good meal during a trip to Gyeongju, I headed to Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant Hwangnam Main Branch. On Hwangnidan-gil, I ordered the Cheomseongdae 7-dish set, which lets you try a bunch of menu items at once — here's my review, plus the menu and atmosphere.

Exterior and location

It's not far from the public parking lot on Hwangnidan-gil, and the exterior itself is designed to stand out.

You can preview the general menu before going in — and Hwangnam Dukkebi is famous for its deunggalbi (short rib) dishes. Most of the menu felt representative of Gyeongju.

Waiting, reservations, and pets

You can register ahead with Tabling for the waitlist, or book through Naver — keep that in mind when visiting. There's a separate area to wait, and pets are welcome too, just let the staff know beforehand.

There's also a terrace where you can sit and eat outside, with plenty of disposable aprons available. Isn't the terrace so charming and old-fashioned?

What's the interior like?

Hwangnam Dukkebi 🐸 is such a famous spot on Hwangnidan-gil it's even been on TV — I noticed traces of well-known visitors having stopped by!!

Seating at Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant with generous table spacing

The furniture reminded me exactly of my grandmother's house in the countryside — walking in, it felt so nostalgic. It gave off a real rural feel and honestly suited Gyeongju perfectly.

The interior was bigger than expected, with lots of tables. The spacing between them was generous too, and the tables themselves felt so homey.

They also had plenty of high chairs available.

There's an origin-labeling board near the entrance, and I liked that the ingredients for the signature dishes are domestically sourced.

What we ordered: the Cheomseongdae 7-dish set and the Gyeongju yukhoe bibimbap.

The Cheomseongdae 7-dish set is meant for two: flying fish roe perilla wraps, Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi, hanwoo yukhoe (raw beef), crab fried rice, Beolgyo cockles, charcoal-grilled bulgogi, and charcoal chicken skewers.

Close-up of the crab fried rice shaped like Cheomseongdae

The moment the food arrived, I was surprised by how it looked. Cheomseongdae is something you can only see in Gyeongju, and here it was recreated as food — so unique and artistic that even the kids loved it.

With the crab fried rice Cheomseongdae as the centerpiece, all the side dishes came out together — the portions were generous, and above all, the yukhoe and cockles were super fresh.

Separately ordered Gyeongju hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap

My husband wanted to try the Gyeongju hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap too, so we ordered it separately — the bibimbap was really delicious and the yukhoe was so fresh, we enjoyed it a lot.

Review event

If you take part in the Naver receipt review event, they give you a free Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi — definitely worth joining (our kids loved it 👍🏻).

Overall thoughts

Can you see our table, cleaned out once again!? Honestly, the portions felt like enough for 3-4 people, not just 2, and above all, everything was delicious. I actually wanted to try the braised deunggalbi too, but given the time, we went with the Cheomseongdae 7-dish set — it let us show the kids what Cheomseongdae looks like beforehand, and taught them that food can be art too.

I booked a day ahead through Naver and walked in right at opening, and the place was already fully seated the moment we got there. A lot of people, like us, were stopping in as part of a Gyeongju trip. The kids ate so well and the adults enjoyed it too — Hwangnam Dukkebi, a top Hwangnidan-gil restaurant in Gyeongju, is the best ⭐️
