Garlic honey Patata pizza in Hongdae, Seoul: Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza

In short

Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza is a traditional Neapolitan wood-fired pizzeria on a quiet alley at Dokmak-ro 7-gil, between Hapjeong and Hongik University stations in Mapo, Seoul. On a Friday 7pm reservation with a friend, the writer ordered a Manjo and Patata half-and-half pizza plus Gamberi e Rucola pasta, and the Patata half — whole potatoes and bacon over garlic honey sauce — was the favorite. Set away from the crowded main street, Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza suits a first date or a wedding-invitation get-together.

This Friday evening I went with a friend to Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza, a popular spot near Sangsu Station. Here's my honest take on the food and the special atmosphere that makes this place stand out!

Booking a table and what Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza looks like inside

I booked a table for 7pm on Friday and arrived right on time. We got there around 6:40pm, and I was pleasantly surprised to see our reserved table already neatly set up for us.

Looking around the cozy interior under warm lighting, the wait for food didn't feel boring at all.

The place isn't huge, but it's warmly and charmingly decorated overall. It has that comfortable, familiar feeling of a college club room, and my friend really loved it too.

Several tables were already seated when we arrived, which made me realize we would've been in trouble without a reservation. I imagine the cozy vibe would feel even better around the holidays or Christmas season.

Browsing the little decorative touches around the space made the wait for our food fly by.

Why the 72-hour fermented dough tastes so good

The secret to Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza's especially chewy dough is the careful process behind it. Using only yeast, they let it naturally ferment for 72 hours at low temperature. Maybe that's why my stomach felt light and easy to digest afterward.

The pizza is baked quickly in a super-hot oven made from Italian Vesuvius volcanic stone, over 400°C. That keeps the freshness of the ingredients intact while maximizing the dough's texture. The edge of the crust, called the cornicione, is really the star of the show here.

Slightly charred and crispy on the outside, chewy and rice-cake-like on the inside — I ate every last bit of it, haha. Knowing they stick to authentic Neapolitan methods without any MSG made me trust the place even more.

Manjo and Patata half-and-half pizza plus Gamberi e Rucola pasta

We ordered a half-and-half pizza combining Manjo and Patata, along with a Gamberi e Rucola pasta.

The Patata pizza, topped with whole potatoes and bacon in a garlic honey sauce, was soft yet sweet and spicy at the same time. I personally liked the Patata more — that bite of potato was really nice.

My friend preferred the meat-heavy Manjo pizza, and the meat toppings really were incredibly tender.

It could've been a heavy combination, but the tomato sauce base kept everything nicely balanced.

A plate of Gamberi e Rucola oil pasta

The rucola oil pasta that came alongside had a bright, fresh arugula aroma that refreshed the palate.

There was a generous amount of shrimp too, plump and fun to peel, haha. The noodles had just the right chewy bite, blending smoothly with the oil sauce instead of feeling separate. The house-made pickles were nice and crunchy, perfect to snack on between bites. Watching the cheese stretch made it obvious they don't skimp on good ingredients. The toppings went all the way to the edge of the crust, so every last bite was satisfying.

A quiet alley location and service that works for group dinners

Hongdae Hwadeok Pizza sits on a quieter alley between Hapjeong and Hongik University stations, which actually made the experience feel more relaxed. The staff were all so kind that I felt well taken care of throughout the meal.

Tucked away from the busy main street, it's perfect for a quiet conversation — a blind date or a pre-wedding gathering. Thanks to the great food and warm atmosphere, I had a really enjoyable evening catching up with a friend I hadn't seen in a while.

The combination of chewy, authentic Neapolitan dough and fresh toppings is excellent — bring anyone here and they'll be impressed. I'd recommend it to anyone who prefers mild, non-greasy flavors or wants a cozy time on a quiet alley. I'm already planning to come back soon to try other kinds of pizza, haha.
