Corkage-free hanwoo lunch in Seochon, Seoul: Tonguidong Gukbinkwan
In short
Tonguidong Gukbinkwan Gyeongbokgung Station Branch is a hanwoo (Korean beef) grill house in Seochon, Seoul, set down an alley about 127m from Gyeongbokgung Station Exit 3, with a pine-tree garden wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass. At a weekday opening-time lunch in a window seat, the writer ordered the hanwoo 1++ short rib platter for two at 90,000 won plus rib fried rice at 12,000 won and worked through five cuts in order, from flower short rib to skirt steak. The portions are not huge, but comparing the cuts and pairing them with the poached-egg sauce made Tonguidong Gukbinkwan a satisfying Gyeongbokgung date lunch.

We went on a date to Gyeongbokgung and grabbed lunch nearby afterward. We wanted somewhere with a nice atmosphere where we could eat at a relaxed pace, and we heard there was a Blue Ribbon-rated hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant set in a hanok, so we checked it out.
It's Tonguidong Gukbinkwan Gyeongbokgung Station Branch (통의동 국빈관).
Walking down a small alley, we came upon a courtyard with a pine tree — the space had way more atmosphere than we expected from the outside. Here's our honest review of sitting by the window, looking out at the garden, and grilling our way through several cuts of hanwoo.
Where Tonguidong Gukbinkwan is: location, parking and hours
Tonguidong Gukbinkwan Gyeongbokgung Station Branch is at 17-4 Jahamun-ro 2-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, 1st floor, about 127m from Gyeongbokgung Station Exit 3. It sits inside a small alley off Jeokseon Food Culture Street, so it's easy to walk past at first — you need to turn into the alley between Life Four Cuts and Ttungnakwon. There was a sign at the entrance to the alley the day we went, so it wasn't hard to find.
There's no on-site parking, so if you're driving, check out the paid parking lots around Gyeongbokgung Station.

It's a great spot for combining Gyeongbokgung, Gwanghwamun, and Seochon in one trip. Like us, you could stop here for a meal during a Gyeongbokgung date, or before or after browsing the nearby gift shops and galleries.
The pine-tree garden hidden down a Seochon alley

We arrived right at opening, 11:30am on a weekday. Walking into the alley, you first see a waiting area with red brick and briquettes. There were chairs and a Catch Table waiting tablet, but since we came right at opening, we walked straight in without waiting.
At the hanok-style entrance there was a small sign with menu info, along with Blue Ribbon stickers from 2021–2026 and Red Ribbon stickers.

Stepping inside, there was a courtyard with a single pine tree at the center. The dining room wraps around it on three sides with floor-to-ceiling windows, so the garden is visible from almost anywhere indoors.
The red brick and dark brown wood gave it a calm feel, and there was also a space off to the side of the courtyard for pre-searing the meat. Grilling the beef over charcoal briquettes is apparently this place's signature touch.
The mood was quite different from outside the alley, so we found ourselves naturally looking around before we'd even sat down.
At the indoor counter there was a certification plaque for purchasing top-grade hanwoo (1++, No.9).
Seating includes regular 2-top and 4-top tables, plus rooms for 4–6 people and group seating for 8–12. There's space for a couple's meal all the way up to family gatherings or work dinners near Gyeongbokgung Station.
The garden was visible from every seat, but we chose a window seat for a closer view. Seeing the pine tree outside the window kept us in a good mood throughout the meal.
Menu and our order: short rib platter for two at 90,000 won

The Gukbinkwan Signature Set was ₩152,000 for two people. It included 360g of hanwoo 1++ assorted cuts, premium hanwoo yukhoe (beef tartare), and a choice of one dish among doenjang stew, hangover ramen, or hanwoo brisket bibim noodles. The set's platter cuts were listed as tosisal, flower short rib, intercostal, rib brisket, and skirt steak.
We also looked over the à la carte menu.
- Hanwoo 1++ T-bone: ₩35,000 per 100g (ordered in 600–900g units)
- Hanwoo 1++ short rib platter: ₩45,000 per 130g (minimum 2 servings)
- Charcoal-marinated short ribs: ₩35,000 for 280g with bone
- Premium hanwoo yukhoe: ₩28,000 for 120g
- Grilled deodeok (bellflower root): ₩18,000
- Gukbinkwan doenjang stew: ₩10,000
- Hanwoo brisket bibim noodles: ₩10,000
- Rib fried rice: ₩12,000
There were plenty of other dishes, plus a good range of drinks and alcohol, too.
We ordered the hanwoo 1++ short rib platter (2 servings) for ₩90,000 and rib fried rice for ₩12,000, for a total of ₩102,000.
The side dishes and the hanwoo short rib platter as served
The standard side dishes were white kimchi, mustard leaf kimchi, gungchae (royal fern), sweet pumpkin salad, dongchimi (watery radish kimchi), and salted clams. Wasabi, garlic, chili, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and a soft-boiled egg sauce were also set out.
The side dishes were plated neatly, and there was a nice variety to pair with the meat. After a short wait, they lit the grill for us and brought over a separate salad.

Then our ordered meat arrived, and the marbling caught my eye immediately. The color and evenly distributed fat looked so appetizing I wanted to grill it right away.
The cuts that came out that day were flower short rib, chadol yangji (thinly sliced brisket), jebichuri (a rare rib cut), salchisal (chuck flap), and skirt steak.
By the menu's numbers, two servings came to 260g total, so the amount wasn't huge — but it was a good setup for tasting several cuts in small portions.
Five cuts tasted in order, starting with flower short rib
The staff member grilled the first round of flower short rib for us. They explained that the first bite should be dipped well in the soft-boiled egg sauce, the second in salt, and after that we could mix and match the sauces and sides to our own taste.

They placed the well-grilled meat in front of us, and following their advice, we tried the soft-boiled egg sauce first.
With the very first bite, a genuine "wow…" slipped out. The savory flavor of the flower short rib blended so smoothly with the egg sauce that the very first combination won me over.
The second bite, we just dipped lightly in salt. Eating it that way, the flavor of the hanwoo itself came through even more. The first two bites alone were so good that we were excited for the next cuts.

After the flower short rib, they told us to move through chadol yangji → jebichuri → salchisal → skirt steak in that order, so we grilled them one by one following the sequence.
Each cut had a slightly different texture and savoriness, which made comparing them as we ate a lot of fun — personally, flower short rib and salchisal were my favorites. Every single piece had a savoriness I really liked.
We also switched up the dipping combinations, and for my taste, the egg sauce, salt with wasabi, and ssamjang with wasabi were the best.
The wasabi in particular had a hint of yuzu about it. I didn't ask exactly what it was made of, but it had a fragrance a bit different from the wasabi I usually eat, and it stuck with me.
Rib fried rice wrapped in gopchang gim (crinkled seaweed)
Around the time we finished the flower short rib, the rib fried rice arrived. The portion was more generous than expected, topped with a fried egg. There was a good amount of meat mixed into the rice too, so I was glad we'd picked this as our side meal to go with the grilled cuts.
To me it tasted like ssamjang or doenjang — savory with a touch of spice. The meat inside was plentiful too, and it was delicious.
They explained that the gopchang gim (thick roasted seaweed) that came with it should be grilled on the pan and used to wrap the rice or meat.
Grilling the seaweed lightly and wrapping the fried rice in it added a nice nutty flavor that went well together. I also tried it with the grilled meat, but personally, I felt the seaweed's flavor slightly masked the hanwoo's own flavor.
So for me, gopchang gim worked better wrapped around the fried rice, while the meat itself was better with the egg sauce or salt-and-wasabi. Even with the same table setting, the flavor changed depending on the combination, so you end up picking whichever suits your own taste.

Is Tonguidong Gukbinkwan worth it? Our verdict
What stuck with me most about Tonguidong Gukbinkwan Gyeongbokgung Station Branch was the relaxed time we spent eating hanwoo at a table overlooking the pine-tree courtyard.
The short rib platter for two wasn't a huge portion. Still, we got to taste several cuts, and the satisfaction with each individual bite was high enough that, considering the quality of the meat, it felt worth the price. We paired it with the rib fried rice for lunch.
What I remember most is the flower short rib and salchisal, plus the egg sauce from that very first bite. The gopchang gim suited my taste better with the fried rice than with the meat.
We came here while searching for a good restaurant near Gyeongbokgung, and both the atmosphere and the taste of the meat lived up to it. Hope this helps anyone looking for a Seochon restaurant for a relaxed meal after exploring Gyeongbokgung, just like we did.
