Jongno Korean BBQ lunch with beef ribs: Tonguidong Gukbinkwan
In short
Tonguidong Gukbinkwan Gyeongbokgung Station Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Jongno, Seoul, serving Korean beef in a traditional hanok. I enjoyed raw beef short ribs with its signature soy sauce–poached egg sauce, neat side dishes, and soybean paste stew beside the pine courtyard. Verdict: a satisfying choice for a special Korean beef meal.

The atmosphere of a hanok Korean BBQ restaurant near Gyeongbokgung Station
Today, I visited Tonguidong Gukbinkwan near Gyeongbokgung. It is tucked slightly into an alley—just walk a few steps past the Life Four Cuts photo booth!

Located in Seochon near Gyeongbokgung Station, Tonguidong Gukbinkwan Gyeongbokgung Station Branch catches your eye from the moment you enter with the charm of its classic hanok. A lush pine-tree courtyard sits at the center of the restaurant, creating a wonderful setting for a meal while looking out through the windows.

As you would expect from a place that has earned the Blue Ribbon Survey for six consecutive years, the entrance feels especially serene. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and many celebrities have visited, and both the service and atmosphere were lovely. The staff were kind and attentive too, so I truly felt looked after.

Korean beef raw short ribs and neatly prepared side dishes
As soon as I entered Gukbinkwan, a large certification mark declaring it a buyer of the highest grade of Korean beef gave me real confidence before I had even eaten. Just as I expected, the meat looked fresh and excellent. True to a restaurant that serves only the very best of 1++ grade beef, the marbling was intricate; once grilled over charcoal, each bite filled my mouth with rich flavor and nutty savoriness. With neatly presented banchan (Korean side dishes) and professional grilling service added in, it felt like an outstanding place for a special day or to treat someone important.

Once you are seated and have finished ordering, even the banchan that arrive one by one are beautifully done. The tidy dishes are not overpowering, yet they bring out the flavor of the Korean beef to the fullest!

The main dish of this visit was raw Korean beef short ribs, or saeng galbi. As you would expect from a place committed to only the finest 1++ grade Korean beef, look at that gorgeous marbling blooming across the ribs!

- Marbling and quality: The dense marbling threaded through the bright red meat tells you that this is premium beef.
- Texture and flavor: As it grills on the grate, a nutty aroma rises up, and the meltingly tender texture is superb the moment it hits your mouth. The savory, deep juices distinctive to Korean beef spread with every chew and pair beautifully with the neat side dishes.

How do you eat the soy sauce–poached egg sauce?
Tonguidong Gukbinkwan's signature ganjang suran sauce (soy sauce with a poached egg) is a distinctive treat: break the yolk, mix it in, then dip the meat. I think this is the only place where I have seen it! There are plenty of other meat sauces, but the soft, nutty flavor of the poached egg combines with the umami of soy sauce to maximize the plentiful juices and tender texture of the raw Korean beef short ribs. Such a brilliant finishing touch for the meat's flavor!

Lunch verdict, down to the soybean paste stew
The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) I chose to finish the meal was really delicious. Its savory, deep broth was excellent, and it was generously filled with ingredients, making it great alongside rice!
- Hanok atmosphere: A serene, upscale space where you can dine looking out at a beautiful pine-tree courtyard. That makes it a great place to bring an international friend.
- A proven favorite: A trusted Korean beef restaurant with six consecutive Blue Ribbon awards and visits from notable guests from Korea and abroad.
- Top-quality beef: Excellent 1++ grade Korean beef paired harmoniously with neat side dishes.
- Kind service: Thoughtful, attentive hospitality provides a comfortable dining setting.
- Extra benefits: Free corkage and birthday-event support make it ideal for gatherings and anniversaries.
If you want a formal gathering, a meal with someone special, or truly good Korean beef raw short ribs around Seochon or Gwanghwamun, I strongly recommend Tonguidong Gukbinkwan. The beautiful hanok charm and superb Korean beef made for a very satisfying lunch!
