A Janghanpyeong restaurant worth knowing: Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang

I was craving beef for the first time in a while, so I went back to Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang Janghanpyeong Branch, where you can eat generous portions of good-quality beef. Last time I went for the small beef set, but this time I went for the big one haha.

This is a place where you can enjoy plenty of quality beef, plus they refill their signature doenjang (fermented soybean paste) broth endlessly,

and you can freely grab fresh lettuce wraps whenever you like, which made this Janghanpyeong meat restaurant in Dongdaemun feel like much better value than most BBQ places. Let's get into the review!👉

Where is Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang Janghanpyeong Branch, and where do you park?

Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang Janghanpyeong Branch is on the 1st floor of 18 Janghan-ro, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. It's just a 1-minute walk from Exit 1 of Janghanpyeong Station, so it's easy to get to.

Hours are 11:00–22:00 with no break time. They're closed for the Chuseok holiday (September 24–25).

There's a parking lot outside the restaurant, and they run a free valet parking service, so you don't have to worry about parking at all.

Inside the 100-pyeong hall: room for a whole group dinner

True to being a butcher-style restaurant, the interior was extremely spacious and clean. At about 100 pyeong (3,300 sq ft) total, it's more than enough for group dinners, big gatherings, or family meals.

The tables are basically wide, which I always appreciate as a customer. BBQ places can easily build up smoke and grease residue as grilling continues throughout service hours, but this place was kept spotless the whole time.

Ilbeonji Jeongyuk Sikdang menu and prices

Let's take a quick look at the menu.

  • Big Beef Set: 85,000 won (600g+600g)
  • Small Beef Set: 69,000 won (400g+400g)
  • Beef cuts: sirloin, chuck flap, skirt, short rib, flat iron, beef bacon — same composition for big or small
  • Big Pork Set: 69,000 won (450g+450g) — fresh pork belly, pork neck, pork jowl, beef bacon
  • Basic table charge: 2,000 won per person

Side dishes and the doenjang broth refilled from a kettle

Once you pick a menu, the table gets set up fast. The basic side dishes are pretty generous — kimchi, pickled chili peppers, macaroni salad, pickled onions, and green onion salad.

They even bring out the whole container of sauce that goes with the pickled onions — the scale here is different, right? It's the same size as a water pitcher, so you don't have to keep going back and forth for more sauce. The water was a nice touch too, loaded with ice to keep it cold.

Then the grill plate gets set up right in the middle of the table, with doenjang sitting right in the center. This restaurant's doenjang is honestly the highlight — it's already generous that it comes standard without having to order it separately, but on top of that, staff keep circling around and the moment the broth looks low, they suddenly appear with a kettle to refill both the broth and the vegetables.

What's at Ilbeonji's self-service corner

The self-service corner is fully stocked with lettuce, perilla leaves, onion, garlic, ssamjang (dipping sauce), green onion salad, kimchi, chili peppers, sesame oil, and salt, so if you run low mid-meal, just help yourself to as much as you want.

It's delicious just as it is, but dropping in some beef bacon or other cuts here and there turns it into an amazing beef doenjang jjigae (stew).

The 600g+600g Big Beef Set: too much beef for one photo

I already thought the small beef set was a lot, but the big one is on a whole different scale.

Big Beef Set split into a three-panel photo

It didn't fit in one shot, so I split it into three photos for the first time in a while. Can you tell how good the meat quality is just from the photos haha.

The meat feels as fresh as if it were just butchered straight from the shop. That's really the charm of a butcher-style restaurant, isn't it!

Six cuts of beef laid out on the wide grill plate

The grill plate is on the wider side, so you can lay out the skirt, short rib, flat iron, sirloin, and beef bacon one by one and enjoy them in order.

How the six cuts grilled and tasted

Using premium-grade beef means there's basically no gamy smell and the meat stays juicy. The grill has strong heat, so the meat cooks fast — flip it evenly on both sides and it's ready in no time. It's already lightly salted, so it's tasty on its own without needing extra seasoning.

A grilled piece of beef dipped in salt

It's worth trying a few different ways — dip it in the salt provided, or add some sesame oil from the self-service corner.

Lettuce wrap with beef and pickled onions
Beef wrap topped with kimchi and green onion salad

Wrap the lettuce with kimchi, pickled chili peppers, green onion salad, or pickled onions in various combinations, and you'll get a wide range of flavors.

Doenjang jjigae served with rice at the end of the meal

And thanks to the doenjang jjigae that kept getting refilled throughout the meal, we even added rice and ate until we were completely full. Didn't need dessert at all after that haha. Janghanpyeong Jeongyuk Sikdang in Dongdaemun never disappoints, no matter when I visit! I'll be back again.
