Beef tendon hot pot with noodles at Yeongtong bar street: Susan Jang

In short

Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch is a Japanese izakaya on the bar street by Yeongtong Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. On a second visit to Susan Jang, the order was live sweet shrimp sashimi and beef tendon hot pot, with the shrimp dipped in buldak mayo sauce and the meal finished with the noodles that come with the hot pot. The spicy broth is made for a glass of soju, and Susan Jang fills up even on weekdays, so a reservation is worth making.

You'll regret it if you don't know this spot in Yeongtong — live sweet shrimp sashimi and beef tendon hot pot at Susan Jang, highly recommended.

I loved it so much last time that I went back to Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch. Even though this was my second visit, I was already excited just picking what to order. The beef tendon hot pot I loved so much last time, plus live sweet shrimp sashimi since it's the season for big prawns. Both were perfect with a glass of soju haha 😆

We visited with a reservation. When we arrived, our seats had already been held for us so we could sit right down. Susan Jang gets busy even on weekdays, so if you already know your date and time, booking ahead will give you peace of mind.

What the dachi bar seats are like

This time we sat at the dachi seats. Since you sit side by side, the table can feel a little tight, but I actually liked that atmosphere. Waiting for the food while sitting shoulder to shoulder made it feel like a small Japanese izakaya.

Grilled atka mackerel, the complimentary starter

While we waited for the menu, grilled atka mackerel came out as a basic side dish. The flesh was soft and salty, so I kept reaching for it with my chopsticks. Having a warm white fish to settle my stomach before really getting into the soju put me in a good mood from the start 😊

Live sweet shrimp sashimi with buldak mayo

The dish I was most looking forward to that day was the live sweet shrimp sashimi! 🦐 It came with buldak mayo (spicy chicken mayo sauce) served separately, and this was my first time dipping shrimp in buldak mayo. I wasn't sure how it would taste at first, but it turned out to be an absolute delicacy.

The spicy, savory kick of the buldak mayo added to the sweetness of the shrimp sashimi, so I kept taking a piece and dipping it again.

The shrimp sashimi was fresher than I expected — so fresh it was still moving — and it startled me at first, so about halfway through I just cut it all up with scissors. It really was that fresh...!!!!!!!

How does the beef tendon hot pot taste?

And then the beef tendon hot pot we ordered together! Having a drink over shrimp sashimi and then getting a warm broth was the perfect combination. The broth is on the spicy side, so it went great with soju 🍶 A spoonful of hot pot broth, a piece of tendon, then another sip of soju — that flow!

This is probably why people crave a broth-based side dish when drinking 😂 The tendon tasted great with the hot pot broth, but it was also delicious dipped in the buldak mayo that came with the shrimp sashimi. That sauce was originally meant for the shrimp, but it went so well with the tendon too — it felt like discovering a new combination that day.

Finishing the hot pot with the noodles included

The beef tendon hot pot comes with noodles included. You don't need to add them separately, so after eating the broth and tendon, we got to finish off with a hearty portion of noodles too. Starting with shrimp sashimi and ending with spicy beef tendon hot pot and noodles felt like eating a proper dinner on top of drinking snacks!

Where to drink soju in Yeongtong, Suwon

If you're looking for a place to have a glass of soju in Yeongtong, Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch is a great choice. It's busy even on weekdays, so I'd recommend booking a reservation like I did. This was my second visit.

The live shrimp sashimi and beef tendon hot pot combo is great, but once shrimp sashimi season ends, make sure to try the flounder salt gimbap too. I had it on my last visit and it was so good I still think about it 😊
