Yeongtong Station seafood restaurant with yuzu rice cake: Susan Jang

In short

Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch is a seasonal seafood restaurant a one-minute drive from Yeongtong Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. The order was the seasonal assorted special, live sweet shrimp sashimi and butter-grilled sul-tteok (steamed rice cake), which arrived alongside a complimentary grilled flounder and butter-grilled shrimp heads, and the child's favorite was the rice cake topped with yuzu sauce. The sashimi was fresh and the menu wide enough that one visit at Susan Jang felt too short.

Here's my review of Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch, a Yeongtong Station favorite with great vibes and delicious live sweet shrimp sashimi.

Where is Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch, and where do you park?

Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch is about a minute's drive from Yeongtong Station, and you can park on the ground level of the building. Once you park and head down to the first floor, you'll spot Susan Jang right away — the log-style sign is distinctive and easy to notice. Susan Jang already has several locations known for seasonal seafood, carefully selecting and aging the best ingredients each season, plus a wide range of dishes. Since it's near Yeongtong's main commercial area, I think it'll become a well-known Yeongtong Station favorite. Apparently live sweet shrimp is in season right now, and since my wife loves it, that's why we came. ^^ There's also a tank out front, which really gives you a sense of freshness haha.

Inside Susan Jang: seating and atmosphere

Walking into Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch, there aren't that many seats, but it has a really warm, atmospheric feel. There are tables for 2 and 4, and without a reservation the seats fill up fast. The decor gives off a Japan-like vibe, and I love how simple and clean the interior feels overall. Great for a date, and great for a family visit too.

What's on the Susan Jang menu, and what we ordered

On the menu, live sweet shrimp sashimi and salt-grilled live shrimp are the current best sellers, and there's also a seasonal assorted special featuring fresh fish and seafood. Beyond that, there's flower shrimp with uni and scallop trio, garlic knife clam Toomba pasta, uni, and Jangheung butter garlic knife clam with beef brisket trio, among other dishes. We ordered the Susan Jang seasonal assorted special, butter grilled sweet rice cake, and live sweet shrimp sashimi.

Complimentary grilled flounder at Susan Jang

While waiting after ordering, the grilled flounder comes out first. This is a complimentary dish, fried crispy — I love how the outside is crunchy while the inside stays moist.

Seasonal assorted special: ten items on one platter

Next comes the Susan Jang assorted platter. The combination of colorful fish and seafood is so pretty. You can tell just by looking that the fish and seafood are super fresh. There must be around 10 kinds in total — flounder, sea squirt, scallop, sea cucumber, abalone, and more.

Every piece of sashimi had that great firm, springy texture and real ocean flavor. Each fish's distinct taste kept my mouth happy. This was my first time trying stone sea squirt, and its refreshing feel really stood out. My wife especially loved it. The very soft scallop also suited my taste well. It was a great, generous assorted platter — pairs really well with drinks haha.

Live sweet shrimp sashimi and butter-grilled shrimp heads

Then we tried the live sweet shrimp. The shells were removed but the shrimp were still moving haha. Our kid was completely startled. We cut off the shrimp heads first and tasted the flesh — the springy, bouncy texture and freshness were amazing. Being in season, the flavor felt even more intense. Dipping it in sauce brings out a whole different flavor.

If you save up the shrimp heads and pay extra, they'll grill them for you — since we hadn't been able to eat shrimp or prawns grilled like this in years, it was so nice to have this option. Going to the sea just for shrimp felt like too much, and only having grilled shrimp sometimes feels lacking, so getting a small portion of both sashimi and grilled heads was just right for the two of us. The heads come out with a buttery aroma, crispy and sweet-savory.

Last up is the sweet rice cake we ordered for our kid, and that yuzu-like sauce was so good haha. The rice cake is super soft with an insane nutty flavor, and topping it with the yuzu sauce feels like heaven haha. I basically ate that yuzu sauce straight. Great vibes, fresh sashimi, and such a wide variety of dishes — one visit really wasn't enough. The staff were kind too, so I'd love to come back again. That was Susan Jang Suwon Yeongtong Branch, a Yeongtong Station favorite. ^^
