Japanese teppanyaki in Yeonnam-dong

Jojo Yeonnam Branch (죠죠 연남점), a great Japanese restaurant in Yeonnam-dong! It is a place where you can enjoy a range of Japanese teppanyaki (iron-griddle cooking) dishes centered on okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancake) and yakisoba (Japanese stir-fried noodles). It is within walking distance of Hongik University Station, so it was also a nice spot for a Yeonnam date or a meal while out in Hongdae.

As you walk through the alleys of Yeonnam-dong, Jojo Yeonnam Branch catches your eye with its neat exterior. Its casual atmosphere, which brings to mind a restaurant in Japan, was especially memorable.

Inside, the space was more spacious and comfortable than I expected, and best of all, every table had its own griddle! Since the okonomiyaki and yakisoba are served on it, I could enjoy every last bite while it was warm.

The open kitchen also made it fun to watch the food being prepared, and the sizzling sounds from the griddle really got my appetite going.

The signature dishes include Jojo Okonomiyaki for ₩17,000, Mentaiko Monjayaki (a runnier savory Japanese griddle pancake with cod roe) for ₩19,500, and Jojo Yakisoba for ₩14,000. The two-person sets are ₩39,000 for the Signature set, ₩39,500 for the Monjayaki set, and ₩36,000 for the Rice set. There are also sides: Donpeiyaki for ₩9,000, Mentaiko Gyoza for ₩8,000, and Waterfall Potato for ₩7,000.

The basic side dish was refreshing beet pickles, and you can add the sauces set out on the table to suit your taste.

Jojo yakisoba with a gentle smoky aroma

The first dish I tried was the Jojo Yakisoba, whose springy noodles were evenly coated in the house sauce.

Perhaps because it was stir-fried quickly over high heat, it had a gentle smoky aroma. The noodles did not go soft either, so the texture was great.

With pork and vegetables mixed in, it felt much more substantial than noodles alone. The smoky meat also went wonderfully with the yakisoba.

Seafood teppanyaki with large scallops

The seafood teppanyaki, stir-fried with shrimp, large scallops, squid, cabbage, pork, and bean sprouts, was delicious too. The scallops in particular were impressively large; one bite delivered a satisfyingly chewy texture along with salty, nutty flavor!

Eating it with the pork, crisp cabbage, and bean sprouts gave it lots of different flavor combinations, and the portion was generous too.

Thanks to the tasty griddle dishes and casual atmosphere, I think it would suit anyone looking for a good restaurant in Yeonnam, too. If you are craving Japanese food in Yeonnam-dong or Hongdae and want a meal that feels a little different, this is a nice place to visit!

With everything from okonomiyaki and yakisoba to monjayaki in Yeonnam-dong, I would recommend it for a Hongdae or Yeonnam date course as well.
