Gangnam Chinese restaurant for dinner with mom: Namsogwan

In short

Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon is a dosakmyeon (hand-shaved noodle) and dim sum Chinese restaurant on Teheran-ro 1-gil near Gangnam Station, Seoul. Over dinner with her mom, the writer ordered yuxiang rousi rice bowl (spicy stir-fried pork and vegetables over rice) for 10,800 won, xiaolongbao for 9,800 won, and shumai for 9,000 won, mixing a rice bowl with dim sum, and the flavors were mild enough to share comfortably with a parent. Seated on the first floor, she also noticed the mix of date-night and work-dinner groups filling the room.

Today's restaurant is Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon near Gangnam Station. Now that I've hit black grade on Superchart, I basically eat out for almost every meal haha. This isn't a food I usually eat, but I heard it was a great spot so I went — and honestly it was so good I finished everything before writing this up.

I went to Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon near Gangnam Station for dinner with my mom. It's known mostly for dosakmyeon (hand-shaved noodles), but they also have rice bowls and dim sum, so it's a good spot to order a bunch of different things together.

Upscale interior of the Chinese restaurant

The interior is pretty upscale too, so it would suit an important occasion.

We sat on the first floor.

There were a lot of couples on dates, and plenty of office workers having dinners with coworkers too.

What we ordered — full rundown

  • 🍚 Yuxiang Rousi Rice Bowl ₩10,800 — the spicy, rich yuxiang sauce went really well with the pork and vegetables
  • 🥟 Xiaolongbao ₩9,800 — soft wrapper with juicy broth inside, best eaten while still warm
  • 🥢 Shumai ₩9,000 — shrimp and pork combo, light but with great texture

Yuxiang Rousi Rice Bowl ₩10,800

Pork and a mix of vegetables stir-fried in yuxiang sauce, served over rice. The sauce was rich with a slight kick of spice, which went really well with the rice.

Rice bowl with pork and vegetables stir-fried in yuxiang sauce

There was a generous amount of pork and vegetables, so eating them together in one bite was really tasty.

Spoonful of meat and vegetables over rice

The flavor wasn't too strong, so my mom enjoyed it without any hesitation. It also paired well as a main alongside the dim sum.

Table setting alongside the rice bowl

The egg soup that came with it was also good.

The warm broth paired nicely with the spicy dish.

Xiaolongbao ₩9,800

Pork dim sum with soup broth inside. The wrapper was soft and the inside was full of broth, so it was best eaten while still warm. It's better to let it cool slightly rather than eating it right away.

Xiaolongbao served in a steamer basket

If you have shredded ginger, eating it together cuts down on the richness and makes for a cleaner bite. If you like dim sum, this is a safe, solid order.

Xiaolongbao picked up with chopsticks

The broth inside was seriously amazing.

Shumai ₩9,000

Handmade dim sum filled with shrimp and pork, and the restaurant's signature dish. Shrimp on top gave it a springy texture while the inside stayed soft.

Handmade shumai topped with shrimp

It was a bit lighter than the xiaolongbao, and being bite-sized, I kept reaching for more. A great side to eat alongside the main dish, one piece at a time.

The shrimp pieces were really large too.
