Picnic List Mangwon is a picnic gear rental shop on Mangwon-ro in Mapo, Seoul, right across from the tunnel that leads to Mangwon Hangang Park. Three friends rented a 3-item combo set and a pick-4 set, adding a fan and a backrest chair, for a total in the ₩20,000 range, then enjoyed the shade and the sunset from about 4 PM to 9 PM on a summer weekend. Cheaper than Yeouido and just 3 minutes from the Han River, Picnic List Mangwon is an easy recommendation for a summer picnic at Mangwon Hangang Park.

Jonggak anniversary Italian, ginkgo window seats: Schedule Osteria

Schedule Osteria is a European-style restaurant on the 2nd floor of the iM Financial Center near Jonggak Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. For a 2nd-anniversary date, the writer sat at a window seat overlooking ginkgo trees, watched the cheese wheel flame show up close, and ordered truffle cheese wheel tagliatelle (₩34,000), Wando abalone risotto (₩34,000) and honey cod steak (₩33,000), falling for a truffle pasta that was neither salty nor greasy. Euljiro Mediterranean restaurant: octopus beats Spanish pulpo at Pyu

Pyu Euljiro is a Mediterranean-style Western restaurant on the ground floor of the Tower 107 building in Euljiro 3-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul. The writer ordered the charcoal-grilled octopus with romesco (34,000 won), the Spanish mackerel pasta (30,000 won) and a Cheongdam-dong Daughter-in-law craft beer (8,000 won), and found the octopus better than the pulpo steak they had eaten in Spain. With calm window seats and unusual signature dishes, Pyu Euljiro is well worth booking for a date or a blind date.

Incheon Korean restaurant: bossam topped with salted squid, Hantiok

Hantiok (한티옥) is a Korean set-meal restaurant in the B1 food court of Lotte Department Store Incheon Branch in Michuhol, Incheon. On a weekend, two diners ordered the bossam set (22,000 won per person) and mixed and matched bossam (boiled pork slices), a yukgaejang-style spicy soup, tofu, mandu (dumplings), salted squid jeotgal and dried radish. Bossam topped with salted squid jeotgal was the most memorable bite of a generous, hearty Hantiok spread.

Suwon bagel café on a rainy weekday: next-day reheat, Orange Bagel

Orange Bagel is a large New York-style bagel café on Omokcheon-ro in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. On a rainy weekday afternoon the writer chose four bagels at Orange Bagel (Laugen butter, potato, basil and blueberry) with a chamomile tea, then took the leftovers home and microwaved them for 30 seconds the next morning. Orange Bagel's Laugen butter bagel, salty outside and sweet inside, is the one to order, and its many power outlets make the café a good spot for laptop work.

Couple anniversary course in Pangyo: yuzu sea bass karaage at Kkweda

Kkweda Pangyo Avenue France Branch (꿰다) is a course restaurant on the Avenue France street in Pangyo, Seongnam, serving 8 courses built on seasonal ingredients. On a couple's anniversary dinner in mid-September, the writer had the ₩75,000-per-person summer course; the standouts were the sea bass karaage dipped in yuzu sauce and the neungi mushroom duck soup, which both diners named their favorite. Verdict: Kkweda is a Pangyo course restaurant worth returning to for anniversaries and other important days.

Pangyo sushi omakase with no fishy taste for a 600-day date: Suyori

Suyori Sikdang (수요리식당) is a small open-kitchen sushi omakase restaurant on B1 of the Samhwan Hi-Spec building near Pangyo Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. For a 600-day anniversary, the writer had the weekday second-seating lunch: 18 courses for ₩45,000 per person. Even as someone sensitive to fishy flavors, the writer found no fishiness in the abalone with gewoo (abalone liver) sauce, the mackerel sushi or the basil pesto tuna. Verdict: Suyori Sikdang is a good-value anniversary omakase for anyone who has hesitated over sushi because of the fishy taste.

Gangnam European restaurant with octopus steak: The Mignon Seoul

The Mignon Seoul is a European-style restaurant on Gangnam-daero 102-gil, between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station in Seoul. Three friends who had not met in a while booked a table on the first day of a holiday and ordered the 3-person main set: mortadella salad, bisque rosé pasta, seafood oil pasta and polpo (octopus) steak. With extra orders, the bill came to about ₩100,000. The polpo steak was so tender and generous that the meat-loving writer switched sides, and the verdict is simple: at The Mignon Seoul, order the polpo.

Beomgye izakaya with free highballs after work: Cheolgil Busanjip

Cheolgil Busanjip Beomgye Branch is an oden bar-style izakaya a 3-minute walk from Exit 2 of Beomgye Station in Anyang, Gyeonggi. On a weekday evening visit for round two after work, the 45,000-won Seomyeon set (assorted fish cake, beef tataki, aged salmon) came with 2 free highballs from a summer promotion, keeping the whole night under 50,000 won. With the hot fish cake broth kept simmering the whole time, Cheolgil Busanjip was an easy place to sit and talk for 3 hours 30 minutes.

Hongdae seafood boil restaurant: ₩66,000 2-person set at Gusa Yeonnam

Gusa Yeonnam is a Japanese teppan izakaya in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, a 7–10 minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 3 on the basement floor of Yeontral Tower. The boiling seafood set for two costs 66,000 won and brings blue crab, black tiger shrimp, green mussels and pink scallops, with udon noodles and garlic butter rice to finish — the best part is mixing the rice and broth inside the crab shell. If you like a spicy seafood broth, the boiling seafood at Gusa Yeonnam beats the wagyu.

Convenience store wine pairing at Jeokto, a Yongsan BBQ restaurant

Jeokto Balhyo Gui Yongsan Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Yongsan Station in Seoul that serves pork belly fermented and aged in traditional earthenware crocks. Corkage is free at Jeokto Balhyo Gui, so a Chilean red wine bought at a convenience store one to two minutes away came with wine glasses and a chilling basket, alongside jeot-samgyeop (salted-aged pork belly) at 28,000 won, fermented pork belly at 18,000 won and tojang stew at 9,000 won. The meat arrives pre-seared so it is easy to grill, and the polished mood suits a date or a pre-wedding gathering.
