The weather was so nice I ended up walking along Cheonggyecheon stream, and before I knew it, evening had rolled around.

Going straight home felt like a waste, but I'd already eaten dinner so I was full — I just wanted somewhere light for a second round. That's how I ended up at Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo (수도원의 비밀 저장고), a quirky bar near Jongak Station styled after a European medieval monastery. The craft beer was genuinely great, and even though we came for a second round, the menu was varied enough that I think it'd work just as well as a first-stop dinner-and-drinks spot. Here's my honest review of this offbeat Jongno bar!

A medieval monastery interior with 70 seats

Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo sits on a stretch near Jongak Station along Cheonggyecheon, an area packed with restaurants and bars.

It's a convenient spot if you're walking along the stream and looking for a dinner or second-round place. If you're after something more distinctive than your average bar in the Jongak area, it's worth checking out at least once!

The concept is obvious from the outside and entrance alone — flags with knights and horses, wine barrels, candlelight, medieval European atmosphere everywhere. My friend and I walked in going wow, wow 👀 haha.

The inside is even more over the top ✨ There's a life-size suit of armor, a mysterious woman's head (?) that looks like it belongs with a crystal ball, flags, candle decor, and props everywhere. I thought I'd just snap a few photos and be done, but there was way more detail than expected, and it was genuinely fun wandering around the place 🤩

The place itself is really spacious. With 70 seats, there were a lot of tables, and it looked like it could comfortably handle bigger groups too.

It works well for a casual drink with friends, but also seems good for a date or a group gathering!

There's a mid-size open room that fits up to 10 and a large private room that fits up to 18. Recommended for group meetups near Cheonggyecheon or Jongak Station!

The spot I found most fun was actually the bar seating. The day I visited, mostly Western foreign staff were working, and for a second I genuinely felt like I'd stepped into Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings 😊 You can watch the staff at work up close from the bar seats, so it's fun to sip a drink and people-watch.

Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo is a dining pub meant to be enjoyed with drinks, so ordering at least one drink per table is required! You can't order alcohol alone — food is required too. If there's a waitlist, the time limit is 2 hours 20 minutes. Outside food is not allowed, and corkage is available.

I always like trying a bit of everything, so I really, REALLY love sampler menus at craft beer places! Sure, drinking a lot of one beer you like is great, but a sampler lets you taste beers you can only get here, right? So I ordered the 4-beer craft beer sampler at Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo too! 😋

• ① Silence (묵언) — a session IPA with perfect citrus aroma and a clean finish. Keeps the citrusy, slightly bitter notes while staying low-ABV and easy to drink
• ② Saint's Garden Ale (성자의 정원 에일) — a pale ale with a diverse hop blend, deep citrus aroma, and the appealing sweetness of domestic honey
• ③ Scorched Sanctuary (성전의 그을림) — a rich dark beer where freshly roasted coffee and dark chocolate aromas smoothly wrap around your palate
• ④ White Cup of the Monastery (수도원의 흰 잔) — a European-style wheat beer with a refreshing fruity taste and smooth finish, enjoyable for anyone regardless of gender

When a sampler arrives, I always taste the beers first, before any food, one sip at a time. It's my process for finding today's favorite 🤭 As for my beer preferences — I lean toward lager over ale, though among commercial ales, Big Wave is my favorite. So the pick of someone like that was...

💕⭐ Silence wins!! ✨💗 That citrus aroma on the IPA was exactly my taste! All the others had their own standout charm too, so it was genuinely hard to choose, but today's favorite is you — Silence!

The pale ale, the witbier, and the dark beer were all delicious too! One sip after another: "Oh! → Oh, wait, what! → Oh!! → Wait, they're ALL good" hahahahaha turns out I actually like ales...? If you're a beer person, I definitely recommend ordering the sampler to try the monastery's range of craft beers! 👍🏻Highly recommend👍🏻

Monk's Fragrance pungi pizza: the sauce is the star

I prefer wood-fired pizza over open-oven pizza, and pungi pizza happens to be my favorite of all — and it was on the menu! Had to order it 😋

I'm a total olive person, and the olive toppings were piled on generously — so satisfying!

There were also plenty of mushroom varieties on top — button, king oyster, enoki, and more. But the thing I liked most wasn't the beloved olives or mushrooms — it was the tomato sauce!

They say the pizza is built on a house sauce developed by a chef who trained at the Hilton Hotel in New Zealand, and honestly, I'd praise the sauce even more than the generous olive and mushroom toppings — it was that good.

There are toothpicks and candy set out at the register for a tidy finish! I love this kind of thoughtful touch 😊💕

The medieval monastery concept was fun and surprising, and the place turned out to be bigger and more varied in seating than I expected — good for dates, friend hangouts, or group gatherings.

I also liked that the food isn't just standard bar snacks — there's a real menu developed by a chef who trained at the Hilton Hotel in New Zealand, with house sauces to match, and plenty of choices like pizza, pasta, gnocchi, and BBQ platters, so it'd work well as an actual dinner spot too.
