Korean BBQ near Hongdae Station, paced grilling: Gogikkun Gim Chunbae
In short
Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant with table-side grilling service, on the third floor of a building a 7-minute walk from Exit 9 of Hongdae Station in Mapo, Seoul. Arriving with a reservation, the writer ordered the hanwoo and hanreon pork set for two (118,000 won), diced-radish rice (8,000 won) and a half-and-half naengmyeon (7,000 won), and asked the staff to slow the grilling pace for a long soju dinner, so the beef, galbisal short-rib meat and five-layer pork belly came off in sequence and were moved to the edge of the grill. With free corkage and no limit on the type or number of bottles, Gogikkun Gim Chunbae is an easy place to drink with your meat.

Today I visited Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch with Sojjang.

What is the third-floor entrance and seating like?
Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch is on the 3rd floor of the building, with an annex on the 4th floor. The restaurant is on the 3rd floor, and the door is really cute — maybe around 160cm tall? Walking through it felt kind of like entering a secret base haha.

Since I'd reserved ahead, the table was already set up like this when I arrived. The interior was a pretty spacious place with maybe 20 tables for four, and since there's also an annex on the 4th floor, I'd guess they take group bookings too.

Free corkage rules and the highball options
Here's a photo of the menu. What stood out was that the corkage-free policy had no restrictions on drink type or bottle count. There were also 9 kinds of highballs, and the lychee taruhighball was tempting me.

As soon as we ordered, they set up the charcoal grill right away and put out the fermented anchovy (myeoljeot) sauce. The charcoal has decent heat.
What comes in the 118,000 won hanwoo and pork set for two

Our ordered Hanwoo Handon Set for Two arrived. It came with hanwoo sirloin, pork belly, back ribs, plus two kinds of corn and mushrooms — and interestingly, the pork belly they gave us was from the michuri (skirt) cut. Staff grill everything for you, and since we like to eat slowly with drinks, we asked them to pace it out.

The side dishes were scallion salad, lettuce, myeongi namul (mountain garlic leaves), baek-kimchi (white kimchi), pa-kimchi (scallion kimchi), pickled onion, ssamjang, garlic sauce, and salt, and the myeoljeot sauce they'd first put out was refreshed just as the meat came out.

The staff grilled the beef and mushrooms first, like this.
Diced-radish rice (8,000 won) and half-and-half naengmyeon (7,000 won)

The diced-radish fried rice came out quickly too, probably because we'd reserved — it had kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi) fried rice with what seemed to be beef tendon mixed in, which was just right for filling an empty stomach.

Once the meat is fully grilled, they move it to the edge of the pan. The beef's all done now, so it's time for the real eating to begin.

You can't have beef without wasabi, right..! They'll give you wasabi if you ask, so anyone who wants some can just mention it.

In the meantime, the half-and-half naengmyeon arrived too. I've seen jjambokkeumbap and jjajjamyeon (half-and-half rice/noodle combos) plenty, but this is the first time I've seen a BBQ place sell a half-and-half naengmyeon like this. Since I like eating a variety of foods, I think it's a great idea to get two dishes in one order like this.

Grilling order for galbisal and five-layer pork belly, plus the myeoljeot dip
While we were eating the naengmyeon and beef, the staff grilled the galbisal next. Dipped in myeoljeot sauce, it was really tasty. Pork and myeoljeot sauce really do go well together.

Next up was the pork belly, and they grilled it with mushrooms placed on top. Since there were two kinds of mushrooms, trying a well-grilled piece of each one was part of the fun.

Same as before, once it was cooked they moved it to the edge, and they also pulled the grill plate back slightly so it wouldn't overcook from the remaining heat — a nice touch of attentiveness.
Is Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae worth it?
Actually, I remember visiting Gogikkun Gim Chunbae Hongdae Main Branch about 7 years ago? I went with a friend back then, when there weren't other branches yet and grilling-service BBQ places were just starting to pop up, so I remember thinking 'oh, places like this exist now.' That same restaurant has since grown into a place with tons of branches, and seeing locations in Gongdeok and Gangnam now, I really feel how much time has passed.
