In short
Ijillirya Yeonnam is a Korean bar (hansik jujeom) in a Yeonnam-dong alley in Mapo, Seoul, a 9-10 minute walk from Exit 3 of Hongik University Station. For a friend's birthday, we ordered the red-flavored yukhoe (raw beef) at 27,000 won, the spicy, tongue-tingling hotpot at 28,000 won and Oneul soju at 5,000 won, sharing gochujang-seasoned raw beef and a hotpot scented with bangail (Korean mint) leaves. With folding doors opened onto outdoor seats and a low-lit interior, Ijillirya Yeonnam suits small gatherings that want atmosphere and proper Korean drinking food together.

It was my friend's birthday, so we planned to get together for dinner after a while. Since it was a birthday, we wanted somewhere with a good atmosphere and food to go with drinks, so I looked around the Yeonnam-dong area.

We usually love Korean food, so this time we decided to pick a Korean-style bar rather than Western food or an izakaya. That's how I found Ijillirya Yeonnam, which had a varied menu and seemed to have a nice atmosphere.

Yeonnam-dong has so many good-vibe bars tucked into every alley that just deciding where to go can be tricky. Since it was a birthday gathering, both the food and photo-worthy atmosphere mattered to us. In the end, we could have both, so I'm glad we chose this place for my friend's birthday.

On a nice-weather day like this, you naturally start looking for a good-atmosphere Yeonnam-dong bar, and since this place lets you enjoy an outdoor terrace vibe too, it felt like perfect timing with the season.
Where is Ijillirya Yeonnam and how do you get there?
Ijillirya Yeonnam is about a 9-10 minute walk from Exit 3 of Hongik University Station. Walking slowly through the Yeonnam-dong alleys, a stylish-looking space suddenly comes into view, so it wasn't hard to find.
What caught my eye first on the outside was the folding door. The indoor and outdoor seating flow naturally into each other, so when the doors are wide open, even sitting inside feels like being on an outdoor terrace.
The weather was nice that day too, so the outdoor terrace seats were open, and the atmosphere looked pretty great. We were hoping for a terrace seat at first, but they were already taken, so we ended up sitting inside!
Inside Ijillirya Yeonnam: seating, mood and do you need a reservation?
Stepping inside Ijillirya Yeonnam, the low lighting made it feel cozier than expected. The tables weren't crammed together, and while there weren't a ton of 2-4 person tables, there were about 4-5 of them, making it a good fit for small gatherings.
It suits a date or a blind date where you want a bit of atmosphere, but it's also relaxed enough for a casual birthday hangout with friends.
I heard weekends and Fridays can get a wait, so if you're planning to visit, I'd recommend reserving ahead. And personally, if any boyfriends out there are looking for a place their girlfriend would love, I'd recommend this one haha.

The photogenic atmosphere combined with mostly Korean food means it probably won't divide opinions much, so it'd work well for a birthday or anniversary spot too. Having a restroom inside is also a plus!!!
What's on the menu at Ijillirya Yeonnam
True to a Korean-style bar, Ijillirya Yeonnam has a range of familiar Korean dishes given their own twist.

There were plenty of options good for a meal or as drinking snacks: dongpa pork belly, red yukhoe, seafood bangaijeon (pancake), bangaijeon, spicy numbing hotpot, yuzu octopus, hodonju, hogamjeon, seafood fish cake hotpot, plump squid muchim, bulgogi bean sprout stir-fry, and more.

There were also small, easy-to-add dishes like aged kimchi tuna rolls and grandma's kalbi-bibim, making it easy to order a variety and share.

The drink selection was fairly wide too — not just soju but makgeolli and other options that pair well with Korean food.
So this place seems great for anyone looking for a yukhoe bar in Yeonnam-dong, but also for anyone who wants a range of snacks beyond yukhoe, like hotpot, jeon (pancakes), or braised pork.
What we ordered at Ijillirya Yeonnam, prices and the welcome drink

What we ordered was red yukhoe for ₩27,000, spicy numbing hotpot for ₩28,000, and Oneul soju for ₩5,000.
While we waited after ordering, they brought out a pre-meal drink too — a distilled liquor served in a pretty glass with a subtle sweet aroma, nice to sip lightly before the meal.
Little touches like this made the birthday gathering feel even nicer.
As the basic side dish, we got soy-braised aged kimchi and pretzels, good for light snacking while waiting for the mains.

Red-flavored yukhoe (raw beef), 27,000 won
First up, the red yukhoe looked striking the moment it hit the table. Raw beef tossed in a gochujang-based sauce was mounded into a round shape with an egg yolk on top, surrounded by gim-bugak (fried seaweed chips), julienned perilla leaves, wasabi, and pear.

There was also a version where the yukhoe was piled bit by bit on top of rolled-up aged kimchi, so there were several ways to eat it within the same plate.

The portion was more generous than expected, so it was easy to share as a snack among several people. Since the yukhoe was coated in that distinctive spicy-sweet gochujang sauce, the flavor stood out much more than the usual soy-sauce-based version.

The raw beef itself was tender, with the savory sauce lingering after each bite, and eating it alongside the pear added a sweet, crisp texture that lightened up the flavor.

Adding the gim-bugak brought in some crunch, and eating it with perilla leaf or wasabi changed the aroma each time, so it was fun mixing and matching. It had that spicy-sweet Jeolla-style gochujang yukhoe flavor, which went really well with drinks — a memorable dish if you're after a yukhoe bar in Yeonnam-dong.
Spicy, tongue-tingling hotpot, 28,000 won

The second dish, whose name itself made us curious, was the spicy numbing hotpot. It came out quite generously in a large pot, and placing it in the middle of the table fit the birthday drinking session well.

The gochujang-based spicy broth was loaded with bangaip leaves, thin-sliced beef brisket, mushrooms, and various vegetables, and there was a subtle numbing aroma reminiscent of mala. The bangaip leaves in particular were the highlight — their distinct fragrance seeped into the broth, giving it a flavor quite different from the usual hotpot, and every spoonful of meat and mushroom brought up a bit more of that aroma, which was fun.

At first the broth tastes mainly spicy, but as you keep eating, the flavor deepens with the aroma coming off the bangaip and the meat. There was plenty of beef brisket too, so it wasn't just about the broth — picking out the toppings was fun on its own.
Eating the mushrooms, vegetables, and beef brisket in the spicy broth paired really well with soju. Especially after the heavily seasoned yukhoe, taking a break with the warm broth in between felt like a palate reset, so ordering the two dishes together was a good combo.
And the Oneul soju, which we ordered out of curiosity since we'd never seen it before, turned out to be better than expected. It had a clean quality with a relatively crisp finish that didn't overpower the food. Overall, Ijillirya Yeonnam felt less like a place you just eat and leave, and more like a Korean-style bar where you enjoy the atmosphere along with the food.

Is Ijillirya Yeonnam good for a birthday or small gathering?
If you like the outdoor terrace vibe, it's worth aiming for that seating on a nice-weather day, and the interior is cozy thanks to the lighting, so it works well as a gathering spot too. Above all, if you're looking for a good-atmosphere Yeonnam-dong bar and enjoy Korean-style drinking snacks, there's a good range of menu options to pick from according to your taste.
From yukhoe to hotpot, they've got a solid lineup of dishes to enjoy with drinks, so I'd like to try other Korean dishes here next time. I came because of my friend's birthday, but I could see myself coming back for a casual drink with friends even without a special occasion.
