Kkanpung shrimp at an Apgujeong Chinese restaurant: Mirim Yangjang
In short
Mirim Yangjang Apgujeong is a basement Chinese restaurant and bar a short walk from Exit 5 of Apgujeong Rodeo Station in Gangnam, Seoul. The writer came with her mother and ordered half a Peking duck (39,000 won) and kkanpung shrimp (18,000 won): the duck skin was rendered lean and clean-tasting, and the shrimp stayed crisp, with neither dish heavily seasoned. With private rooms, a kid's chair and valet parking, Mirim Yangjang Apgujeong suits a dinner with parents or a date in Apgujeong.

Walking to Mirim Yangjang from Apgujeong Rodeo Station
We got off at Apgujeong Rodeo Station that day and walked over. Come out of exit 5, walk straight for 200m, turn left at Ivsazy, then walk another 350m and you're there! Being close to Apgujeong Rodeo Station made it really accessible.

As soon as you get close, the red sign and red carpet catch your eye right away! Red seems to be the concept somehow, so I was already excited before even walking in.......😗
Inside Mirim Yangjang: mood, seating and the private room

Ta-da. Here's the interior! It's decorated in red and wood, with white and black tables, so it felt upscale the moment we walked in. My mom, who came with me, admired the mood too, haha 😁
Seating ranges from tables for two up to large groups. There are quite a lot of seats, so it'd also work well as a small group dinner spot!

There's a nice touch of coat hangers for taking off your outerwear 👍 Overall the interior gave off a upscale Chinese restaurant feel.

There's also a private room set up like this with a 6-person round table, good for a private get-together with friends or a wedding invitation gathering! The room needs to be reserved in advance :)

The restrooms are inside, separated by gender, and super clean! No need to go outside to use them, which was very comfortable...

They also have a kid's chair, so it's good to visit with a young child too ♡ We sat in a spot divided by a partition.

They brought us neatly arranged small plates and utensils, cups, and two side dishes.
The salty peanuts you can't skip at a Chinese restaurant! And that's a sweet-and-sour beansprout and beet pickle. That thing was a game changer!! The sour-sweet flavor cuts right through the greasy taste in between bites 👍 It was so good I refilled it twice.....

There's a QR code at each table, so you can order from your phone!
Mirim Yangjang Apgujeong menu and prices

Here's the menu info! The signature dish is definitely the Peking duck, and the hot pot seems to be popular too! There's also guo bao rou, eoyang eggplant, fried eggplant, kkanpung shrimp, jjamppong soup, mala soup and other Chinese dishes. Since we came for Peking duck and there were two of us, we ordered half a Peking duck (₩39,000) and kkanpung shrimp (₩18,000).

There's also a drinks menu :)

One neat thing about this place — right when you walk in, there's an open kitchen with Peking ducks hanging in a row. Peking duck needs at least 12 to 24 hours of drying time, and the ones on the right looked like they were drying. It seemed like they roast them in that huge cauldron-like thing over there! Since it's a dish that takes a lot of time and care, I got really excited 😊

They take out the duck and slice it right when you order, and the color alone already looked delicious.....
Half Peking duck for 39,000 won: how does it taste?

Ta-da, here's the half Peking duck (₩39,000) :) It comes with the duck, thin pancakes, sauce, and cucumber and scallion. The plating is so upscale too, right?

The duck skin was glistening so much it made my mouth water before I even took a bite 🤤 The plating was so clean and upscale, it put me in a good mood :)

As for the Peking duck's taste — the fat was rendered out so it was light with a subtle seasoning, and the flavor wasn't heavy — that upscale kind of taste! There was zero duck smell either!

The skin was crispy while the meat was tender and moist, so both my mom and I really enjoyed it 🥹 Looking at these photos is making me want to eat it again...........

How to wrap the Peking duck in thin pancakes
Peking duck is delicious eaten on its own, but it's also great wrapped in the thin pancake they serve! Here's how you do it~!
Lay out the pancake like this, then layer on the meat, scallion, beansprout-beet pickle, cucumber and sauce in order, and wrap it up neatly~😋
The meat is tender and light, and eating it wrapped with crunchy cucumber and pungent scallion means you never get tired of it, and just keep going....🥹
Kkanpung shrimp for 18,000 won: crisp, lightly sauced

We also ordered kkanpung shrimp (₩18,000) as an extra! Instead of cooking the shrimp together with the sauce, it comes as crispy fried shrimp with a sweet-and-sour sauce drizzled on top afterward!

Just from the photo of the well-fried golden shrimp, you can already tell how crispy they are. As for the taste — while typical kkanpung shrimp tends to be a bit chewy, this version keeps the crispiness alive, with a very thin layer of sauce that maximizes the crunch. The sauce also wasn't too sweet or heavy, just pleasantly tangy :)

Overall the seasoning wasn't intense, but that actually gave a very clean aftertaste, which I really liked~! I found myself wanting to try other fried dishes next time :)

This is the egg noodle we got for taking part in a Naver review event! It's so good!!! I really recommend joining the review event just to try this egg noodle too :) The noodles are thin but chewy, seasoned just saltily enough, and it paired really well with the Peking duck :) Recommend!
Verdict: an Apgujeong Chinese restaurant to take your parents to

Mirim Yangjang Apgujeong had an upscale interior mood and food that was clean and delicious overall, so I left very satisfied :) Since the Peking duck itself takes so much care to make, this seems like a great place to take your parents like I did, go on an Apgujeong date, or treat someone special to a delicious meal!
Along with Peking duck, there's a wide range of Chinese dishes including hot pot, guo bao rou and kkanpung shrimp, so there's plenty of menu variety, making it good for a gathering with friends or a company dinner in Apgujeong too :) I was satisfied overall, so next time I'm going to come back to treat a friend :)
