Mapo Japanese restaurant: salmon cod roe don at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam

In short

Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a Japanese rice-bowl restaurant in Mapo, Seoul. After work, I ordered sake tarako don with an onsen egg for ₩25,500 when the limited salmon-belly version was sold out, and the thick fresh salmon with white cod roe was even better than expected. Verdict: arrive early for the limited bowl, but the regular one is absolutely worth returning for.

The Menu—and Disappointment Over the Sold-Out Salmon Belly Tarako Don

Looking over the menu, I thought this was a great Japanese restaurant near Hongik University Station for choosing exactly to your taste: there were so many options, from sake don (salmon rice bowl) to katsudon, tendon, warm nabemono (Japanese hot pot), and udon.

🍱 The sad news that salmon belly tarako don was sold out—and the sake tarako don I had to choose instead!

Honestly, my goal that day was the salmon belly tarako don, sold in limited quantities each day. But perhaps because I stopped by in the evening after work, it was sadly already sold out ㅜㅜ. As expected of a popular dish, it seemed to disappear quickly.

Putting my disappointment aside, I ordered the regular sake tarako don instead, topped with salmon and premium white cod roe. I had chosen it only because I had no other option, so I waited without huge expectations—but the moment I saw it arrive, all that disappointment vanished!

Fresh Salmon and White Cod Roe That Made Even the Regular Bowl Satisfying

Even though it was regular salmon rather than belly, the quality was no joke. Its fresh sheen and tender, substantial slices looked so appealing that I was excited before I had even taken a bite.

🥢 A surprise flavor that made me forget my disappointment completely! A Hongdae sake don spot I can definitely vouch for

I immediately added a little wasabi and went straight for the salmon. The moment I took a full bite, I couldn't help marveling at how tender and nutty it was, without even a hint of fishiness!

Even without salmon belly, the regular sake don cuts were so fresh and thick that they had plenty of wonderful texture and flavor.

Just as the description says that only ingredients aged daily are served, the quality of the ingredients felt exceptional. The salty, umami-rich white cod roe was a truly fantastic match too. One bite was enough to neatly resolve my disappointment at missing the limited salmon-belly dish!

Eating sake tarako don
The satisfying salmon rice bowl

Personally, it ranked among the top three sake don bowls I've had around Hongdae in terms of satisfaction. If the standard menu is this good, I became determined to come earlier next time and finally check off the salmon belly tarako don too—this is a Yeonnam-dong Japanese spot I want to revisit.

From Solo Meals and Dates to a Post-Work Beer

🍺 From a filling meal to a beer after work: my final thoughts

A rice bowl and a beer after work

If it had been right near my office, I would have rushed here with coworkers every lunchtime; the slight distance away was my only regret. Its neat, cozy atmosphere makes it perfect for an easy solo meal in Hongdae like mine, while it is also lovely for a couple to chat over dinner, making it a more-than-worthy Yeonnam date spot.

Japanese restaurant suited to dates and solo dining

It was the perfect place to wipe away the day's fatigue with a cool beer on the way home and a filling bowl of rice. The atmosphere, taste, freshness, and service were all perfect, so whenever I crave a proper Japanese rice bowl in Yeonnam-dong, I will definitely return! Next time, I hope I can get there early and finally succeed in ordering that salmon belly tarako don!!
