Gangdong charcoal chicken restaurant with steamed egg: Ondogye
In short
Ondogye is a charcoal-grilled chicken restaurant in Gangdong, Seoul. I returned to this longtime favorite for garlic-salt and soy-marinated dakgalbi, generous sauces, and steamed egg, all grilled by the staff. Verdict: a strongly recommended Cheonho favorite.

A truly, seriously great place I’ve been visiting for years since high school: Ondogye near Cheonho Station ••• It still makes me think, yep, it’s the real deal. Highly recommended.

So humble .. a flavor that is absolutely not modest 🙏🏻
The atmosphere at Ondogye’s main building and annex near Cheonho Station
Hours are 16:00–23:00, with last orders at 22:00. It’s by Exit 6 of Cheonho Station.

Ondogye’s main building is a standalone one-story building, which somehow feels romantic 🫢 There may be a wait on weekends; since they operate both the main building and annex, I headed straight to the annex.

Ondogye’s annex specializes in charcoal-grilled dakgalbi (grilled marinated chicken). The main building and annex seem to have slightly different vibes, but both are cozy and lovely •• It has a nice atmosphere for a small team dinner and I recommend it for dates too.

Ondogye’s menu and house sauces
Such a neat menu. The mains are garlic-salt dakgalbi, soy-marinated dakgalbi, spicy dakgalbi, and salt-grilled chicken neck. Sides include fried chicken gizzards (15 pieces), vegetable skewers, steamed egg, extra stew, and rice balls.

The main dakgalbi is guaranteed deliciousness without needing a long explanation, and I want to call this a truly great restaurant because even every side is good. Every marinade and sauce is delicious too.!!

I think the basic side dishes and assortment of sauces are the real point here. Wasabi and honey, white sauce and red sauce, and pickled radish wraps—these combinations are the best ,, 🤍 The sauces themselves are high-quality and tasty, and even the seasoned bean-sprout and scallion salad that goes alongside is good hahaha ㅠ (everything is good).

Fried chicken gizzards that were delicious from the complimentary starter
The fried chicken gizzards that come as a complimentary starter are seriously tasty from the very beginning. The batter-to-gizzard ratio is great enough to enjoy them plain, and the gizzards are so chewy and delicious .. They’re classically good dipped in salt, while dipping them in the white sauce or other sauces brings another kind of deliciousness—so you can already tell from the free starter that this is a restaurant that means business.
Charcoal is ready, as befits charcoal-grilled dakgalbi •• charcoal fire 🔥🔥
Garlic-salt and soy-marinated dakgalbi
We had the garlic-salt dakgalbi and soy-marinated dakgalbi. The chicken on top is soy-marinated, and the one below is garlic-salt. The staff grill and cut everything for you from start to finish 🤍

🔥🔥 A truly great restaurant.

After grilling it perfectly, the staff member placed pickled radish wraps on the plate first, then the meat generously dipped in white sauce 🤍 Honestly ,, it was so good ,, 🥺

The dakgalbi itself is so tender and delicious ㅠ So full of juices .. It is mostly lean meat, so it’s tender and feels like you are really eating proper meat (meat power ..). A truly great charcoal dakgalbi spot 🫢

Each serving comes with two large pieces. Honestly, so delicious.

One nice touch is the rice cake + honey combination .. 🤍 They cut the rice cake into bite-sized pieces and kindly recommend dipping it in honey too.

Vegetable skewers and rice balls
The vegetable skewers have eggplant, zucchini, tomato, green onion, bell pepper, mushrooms, and so on ..~ If you love vegetables, they are delicious in that familiar way. Personally, the grilled tomatoes were really good.

The rice balls are a DIY kind of feeling ••

Delicious in that familiar way, especially dipped in sauce 🫠 I recommend them.
The signature volcano steamed egg and complimentary dishes
Volcano steamed egg 🥹 Highly recommended. Ondogye has exactly two dishes chosen as signatures: garlic-salt dakgalbi and volcano steamed egg. It is a guaranteed flavor worthy of being a signature dish. It has cheese, and perhaps because they used a torch, it also has a charcoal aroma; it was so soft that it felt like the best steamed egg ever. It’s already September this year, and this is the best steamed egg I’ve had all year 🔥🔥
The doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) is complimentary. I do not usually expect much from free dishes, but this stew has a savory broth and is better than merely decent. The menu says it is carefully simmered with selected Korean dried seafood and assorted vegetables.

The complimentary ice cream was strawberry flavored. Maybe because we were craving dessert, it was very satisfying, they said. It tastes like real fresh strawberries .. ~

Ondogye in Cheonho is a charcoal dakgalbi restaurant with flavor you can count on. The main chicken is so delicious, and every sauce is tasty too, so I can see why it receives such high praise. Dakgalbi may bring red spicy chicken to mind, but this is a very different concept: charcoal-grilled chicken bursting with juices. I strongly recommend it as a great Cheonho restaurant.
