Gangdong, Seoul brunch café for lemon sorbet drinks: Damgeum

Sometimes one café seems to change the entire feel of a neighborhood. Damgeum (담금), where I went this time, was exactly that kind of place. Even the phrase on the sign was something else: “IL MIGLIORE DELLA CITTÀ — BEST IN TOWN.” That confident Italian line raised my expectations before I even stepped inside.

The first thought that hit me when I walked in was, “Is this really Korea?” Patterned tile floors, dark bentwood chairs, mint marble tables, and gold-trimmed details. Rather than the usual formula for a mood café, it felt like stepping into an old café somewhere in Europe.

Even a single framed picture on the wall was far from ordinary. It showed a gelateria lane with a bicycle and a red mailbox, and paired with the green plants on the wooden floating shelf beneath it, the whole space looked like one big picture. You could tell care had gone into every little detail, from candleholders and ceramic planters to antique glass bottles. 🕯️🌿

Brunch with an Italian menu to welcome you

You order at a kiosk, and it was fun that even the menu names were all in Italian. The pasta options included Carbonara al Limone (lemon carbonara, ₩21,000), Rose di Pappardelle ai Funghi (mushroom rosé pappardelle, ₩18,000), and lasagna (₩22,000). There were three panini—apple-Brie, Classico, and jambon & berry—priced from ₩12,000 to ₩14,000. You could also add the soup of the day (₩9,000) or bocconcini cheese salad (₩14,000). The Duetto Limone and Duetto Rosato sets for two were in the ₩50,000 range, and looked perfect to share with a partner or friends.

That day, I chose the bocconcini cheese salad. Orange slices circled the edge of the plate, topped generously with cherry tomatoes, mozzarella bocconcini, arugula, prosciutto, and Parmesan. One look and it already felt wonderfully fresh. 🍅🧀🍊 The tart orange, salty prosciutto, and nutty cheese came together in such a balanced way that I kept reaching for my fork.

The drink I ordered alongside it had gentle fizz with a whole scoop of lemon sorbet floating on top. At first I thought it was simply an ade, but as the sorbet slowly melted, the sweet-tart flavor became richer and richer—that was the charm. Each sip brought a different level of brightness, so there was never a dull moment. 🍋✨

A different mood at every table

Looking around, every seat had its own feel: window tables, cozy tucked-away seats beneath the shelves, and tables in the middle of the hall. It seemed like photos would turn out beautifully wherever you sat, and I kept noticing the combination of patterned tile floors and vintage chairs. It would be lovely for reading alone, or for sharing pasta and a glass of wine with a group.
