In short
Hoegi Wang Galbitang is a galbitang (beef short rib soup) and braised short rib restaurant 333m from Exit 1 of Hoegi Station in Dongdaemun, Seoul. On a second visit around 8pm, just 40 minutes before the 21:00 closing, the bowl arrived with two large ribs, and the self-serve bar covered rice, side dishes, misugaru (roasted grain drink) and barley gangjeong. Takeout orders at Hoegi Wang Galbitang come with 1.5 times the broth, enough for two people, which is why the visit was worth repeating.

There's one place that always comes to mind first when I think of good restaurants near Hoegi Station — Hoegi Wang Galbitang! I visited once before on a rainy day, loved it, and even packed some to take home.
This was my second visit to this Hoegi Station favorite. Since I don't love crowds, I went around 8pm, and since it was right before closing, I got to eat in a relaxed, unhurried way. It's also conveniently close to the subway.

Even at this late hour, like me, customers kept coming and going. I thought I might be one of the last ones, but people kept arriving right up until 30 minutes before closing. It's clearly a well-loved spot near Hoegi Station.

Self-serve bar with free refills on rice and side dishes
There's no extra charge for rice here. If you run out, just grab more from the self-serve bar. Same goes for side dishes — beyond the basic ones you're given, there's also deodeok (mountain root) muchim (seasoned salad) available at the self-serve bar.
For dessert, there's barley gangjeong (sweet crunchy snack) and misugaru (roasted grain drink), and you can take as much as you like. The misugaru is nicely sweet, and the barley gangjeong is crispy, never soggy, and sweet too. That sweetness really washes away the fatigue — worth grabbing for dessert.

How big is the galbitang with two large ribs?
The food came out fast, no long wait. The soup arrived in a stone pot with two very large bones sitting prettily inside. I saw quite a few families with kids there too, but since the soup is very hot, extra caution is needed if you're dining with children. It seems popular because people of all ages love galbitang. Honestly, you could eat just the kkakdugi (radish kimchi) alone with the soup and still feel full.
The portion is generous and filling. I love green onions, and they come piled on generously without needing to ask. The rice looked like only half a bowl at first — I wondered if that was too little — but since you can refill at the self-serve corner, I just started eating. Turns out half a bowl was plenty once I got into it. With so much meat, half a bowl of rice was enough to fill me up. There's also a good amount of glass noodles inside.

The bones are huge, with plenty of meat still attached. This Hoegi Station favorite also has its own dipping sauce for the ribs on the table, so you can dip to your taste. The sauce pairs perfectly with the meat.

How is the broth seasoned, and what about the kkakdugi and other galbitang?
The broth is well-seasoned, so mixing in rice didn't make it bland — it worked really well. Before mixing in rice, I picked out some meat and glass noodles to eat first, then mixed in the rice and had it with the well-fermented kkakdugi.
Another charm of Hoegi Wang Galbitang is this kkakdugi. It tastes exactly the same every time I visit, and it pairs so well with the galbitang. I think that's the flavor I can't forget, which keeps bringing me back.
If you're dining with kids or elderly family, the aronsatae (shank) or spicy versions might be a good choice. I had the aronsatae once at a different branch and it was delicious too. I haven't tried the spicy one yet, but it seems like a good order when you're craving something with a kick.

Here's the misugaru and barley gangjeong I grabbed for dessert after finishing my rice. Don't forget to grab these too — well worth it.

Takeout with 1.5x broth: enough for two
And here's the takeout info. Last time, after eating, I noticed this and packed some to bring home. When you order takeout, they give you 1.5 times the usual amount of broth. It's great because you can freeze it at home and enjoy it whenever you're craving it. Since there's more soup than what you'd get eating in-store, it's plenty for two people. Eating well and packing some to go is a satisfying feeling just to look at.
Fall is starting now, and mornings and evenings are getting chilly. This feels like the perfect food for this season. After a hot bowl, you feel warm all the way through — I think it's time to move from cold foods to a nice hot bowl of soup. Good to eat in-store or take home, either way.
Just a heads up when ordering takeout — even a single portion comes as 1.5 servings, so it's on the heavier side. Keep that in mind. Another great meal today!
