Seafood restaurant in Magok with platter and shrimp stew: Neoul Magok

In short

Neoul Magok is a seafood pojangmacha (tented drinking spot) in the middle of the Balsan pojangmacha street in Gangseo, Seoul. Over dinner with a friend, the writer ordered the seafood platter for 42,000 won and the freshwater shrimp spicy stew for 28,000 won: chilled scallop, top shell, abalone and sea squirt first, then the hot stew with sujebi (hand-torn dough) to finish. Two people can eat their fill at Neoul Magok on these two dishes alone.

I had dinner plans with a friend near Balsan a while back, and while figuring out what to eat, I ended up at Neoul Magok, a Balsan Station spot great for seasonal seafood with a soju or two 🙌🏻 It's a seafood pojangmacha (tented drinking spot) right in the middle of the Balsan pojangmacha street, known for its aged sashimi and generous seafood platters — instant pick!!

How to get to Neoul Magok from Balsan Station

Directions to Neoul Magok on the 1st floor of Magok Ipark

It's about a 3-minute walk from Balsan Station Exit 1, right in the Magokbalsan area's pojangmacha street packed with bars, so the whole vibe fits an after-work drink perfectly. It's on the 1st floor of Magok Ipark so it wasn't hard to find, and the pojangmacha-style storefront catches your eye even just passing by! When the weather's nice you can feel the outdoor tent atmosphere too, so anyone who loves that pojangmacha mood will love it even more.

What is the atmosphere like inside?

Interior of Neoul Magok with its retro pojangmacha atmosphere

Step inside and it's less of the sleek, trendy sashimi restaurant look and more of a retro pojangmacha feeling 😽 There's 80s-90s music playing and a comfortable vibe for a drink, which made it especially good for hanging out with friends. The tables fit 2–4 people easily, and there are seats you can push together, so it works fine for bigger groups too~

It felt less suited to a quiet date and more like the kind of place perfect for chatting with friends over drinks, or for a company dinner with coworkers 💡

Neoul Magok menu and what we ordered

Menu board showing the seafood platter and jjigae options at Neoul Magok

That day we ordered the seafood platter for 42,000 won, and since we were craving something hot, we also got the freshwater shrimp jjigae (spicy stew) for 28,000 won. Neoul also has menus like aged sashimi platter, steamed seafood, and whelk soup in a metal bowl, so with a bigger group you could order a bunch of things to share as drinking snacks ➰

There are also seasonal specials and a wide range of drinks.

Basic table setting

The basic side snack is corn snack (gangnyeongi). Haven't had this in ages hahahaha

What comes on the 42,000-won seafood platter?

🐚 Seafood platter, 42,000 won. This menu includes scallop, top shell, abalone, sea squirt and more — about 6 to 10 kinds of seasonal seafood depending on the time of year. The exact lineup can vary a bit by season or that day's supply!

Seafood platter with scallop, top shell, abalone and sea squirt

Ordering the seafood platter comes with a small clam soup on the side. This was a surprisingly nice touch! The broth was clear and refreshing, not too intense right off the bat, and paired well with the seafood ✨

The scallops were soft and moist, and the abalone was firm and fresh too.

The top shell was crunchy and chewy, seriously satisfying to bite into 〰️

The sea squirt hit with that distinctive ocean scent the moment it went in my mouth. If you like seafood, this is the kind of combo that makes you crave soju automatically 🤭

Freshwater shrimp spicy stew, 28,000 won with sujebi

🍲 Freshwater shrimp jjigae, 28,000 won. A spicy stew with freshwater shrimp and sujebi (hand-torn dough bits) in it!

Freshwater shrimp jjigae with sujebi

The broth is spicy and refreshing, but there's a distinct savory, rich flavor from the freshwater shrimp that makes it feel a bit different from a regular seafood stew 😙

Rich, spicy broth of the freshwater shrimp jjigae

And then the sujebi inside!! Chewy dough soaked up all that spicy broth — eating it together with the soup was seriously so good 🤤

A spoonful of chewy sujebi soaked in broth

Starting off cold and clean with the seafood platter, then moving to the hot, spicy jjigae at the end — the combo was just right. Felt like getting your hangover cure in the same sitting as the drinking hahahaha. The portions were quite generous for two, so ordering the seafood platter plus the jjigae left us fully stuffed 🙌🏻

Who should go to Neoul Magok?

  • Anyone near Balsan Station wanting seasonal seafood with a drink
  • Anyone in Magok looking for a casual bar to go to with friends
  • Anyone looking for a spot for a company dinner or a bigger group
  • Anyone who loves that outdoor-tent-style seafood pojangmacha feeling

With 3 hours of free parking supported too, it's great to visit even if you're driving! Next time I want to try the aged sashimi platter with the whelk soup combo, hehe. If you're ever near Balsan craving sashimi or seafood, Neoul Magok seems worth a visit. Highly recommend on a day you want good food with a drink!! 🙌🏻
