Dongjak Korean BBQ for beef intestines: Bareun Hwangso Gopchang
In short
Bareun Hwangso Gopchang is a beef intestine restaurant in Dongjak, Seoul, between Sadang and Isu stations. We had two portions of assorted intestines, one portion of Korean beef gopchang, cheonyeop and fish cake soup, then kkakdugi fried rice. A great spot for drinks and shared bites with friends.

Getting to Bareun Hwangso Gopchang between Sadang and Isu stations
It’s roughly halfway between Sadang Station and Isu Station! On the way, you’ll see a sign that says “A Street You Want to Stay On.” Follow the arrow on it into the alley and the restaurant appears right away, so it was easier to find than I expected, haha.

What are the exterior and interior like?

The restaurant wasn’t huge! From what I saw, there were about six tables inside. Rather than a big, boisterous barbecue place, it felt just right for sitting around with friends, eating gopchang and having a drink!!

There was also an easy-to-read display of ingredient origins on one side. Since it’s food we’re eating, I liked that this was written clearly for customers to check.

That day, I ordered two portions of assorted intestines plus one portion of Korean beef gopchang!

The banchan served before the intestines
Once you order, they first set out the banchan (small side dishes). First up, cheonyeop (sliced beef tripe)!!! Dip it in the sesame oil sauce and it’s crunchy-chewy and nutty, so I kept reaching for it before the gopchang arrived, haha.

They also bring perilla leaves pickled in soy sauce, garlic sauce that’s perfect for dipping the gopchang, and seasoned chives! Eating only gopchang can get a little rich, but the perilla leaves or chives were great for refreshing the palate in between.

And fish cake soup comes as part of the basics too! A sip of warm broth, then gopchang... there’s no better drinking food. The weather has been so nice lately, hasn’t it? Chatting with friends over delicious food on a nice day really does make me happy. (Happiness isn’t much, really..)

Assorted intestines with gopchang, daechang and makchang
Two portions of assorted intestines plus one portion of gopchang. The assorted platter includes gopchang (small intestine), daechang (large intestine), and makchang (abomasum), so it’s perfect if you want to try several cuts rather than just one!

When an assorted platter of intestines comes pouring out, it can be frustrating not knowing which cut is which, but they had a photo posted like this, lol. Doesn’t it look so delicious as it turns golden brown? I’m always the kind of person who finds it sooo hard to wait until everything is cooked.. haha ;;

The color is incredible, right!! My friend couldn’t wait and had already started moving the chopsticks.. hahahahaha. When I cut open the gopchang, it was full of rich filling, so nutty and delicious! The daechang had that properly rich, fatty savoriness too, while the makchang was nice and chewy—there was so much fun in alternating between the cuts, haha. There were rice cakes in there too, and even the rice cakes browned in the gopchang fat!!!!
It was delicious on its own, and also went wonderfully with the garlic sauce or seasoned chives served alongside it.

Finishing with kkakdugi fried rice
Once you’ve had gopchang, you can’t skip fried rice at the end... so we ordered kkakdugi fried rice too! Fried rice after gopchang somehow keeps going down even when you’re full, lol. They bring mayonnaise too, so mayonnaise lovers can add it to taste. I tried a little, and the mayonnaise made the spicy-salty kkakdugi fried rice even smoother and nuttier.
With gopchang, daechang, makchang, and fried rice, this was just the spot for a drink. If you’re looking for a Sadang dinner with friends, a Sadang gathering, or a place for a small work dinner in Sadang, it could be worth a visit :)
