Hongdae bar in Seoul with four painting-themed cocktails: Rosetta
In short
Rosetta is a cocktail bar on Eoulmadang-ro in the Hongdae and Hapjeong area of Mapo, Seoul, where every drink is built around a famous painting. On this date night at Rosetta we drank four cocktails — Dancer on Stage, Water Lily Pond, Summer Sunlight and The Scream — alongside cuttlefish ragu linguine and a fruit and cheese platter. Dancer on Stage, the dessert-style cocktail, was the favourite of the four and the reason we plan to come back.

While looking for a good date spot in Hongdae, I visited Rosetta, a cocktail bar with great atmosphere. The space felt so European it reminded me of a bar I stopped by while traveling in Europe, and with art-inspired cocktails you can't find just anywhere, it made a perfect date course. Since there's an outdoor terrace, it's especially great on nice-weather days — perfect for this kind of autumn visit.

There are outdoor tables too, so it's a great pick on nice days. With weather this cool and pleasant lately, you can really enjoy the outdoor terrace vibe. The atmosphere is so good — go enjoy an autumn date before winter's freeze arrives!
What Rosetta feels like: a Hongdae cocktail bar with a European look

The atmosphere was great from outside, but going in, I liked it even more. It genuinely felt like a bar I'd walked into while traveling in Europe, which personally made me happy. The wood-tone interior, the soft lighting, and all the little details combined to make it a great spot for a drink on a date.
Rosetta's menu: which painting cocktail should you order?

Looking through Rosetta's menu, I found something unusual — art cocktails! Paintings I'd actually seen while traveling in Europe were right there on the menu, which felt oddly nostalgic. It was fascinating that each cocktail was designed to express the mood and imagery of a specific painting. After some deliberation, I ordered Water Lily Pond and Dancer on Stage. We'd originally planned to have just one each and leave... but they were so good we ended up drinking four in total, adding Summer Sunlight and The Scream.

Here's the food menu. After some thought, we ordered cuttlefish ragu linguine and a fruit-cheese platter.

The cocktails arrived quickly after ordering! The staff explained in detail what ingredients went into each one, how to drink it, and even how it's made, which made the whole experience even more fun.
Painting cocktail 1: Dancer on Stage

Dancer on Stage was described as a dessert cocktail with herb liqueur, cognac, black tea, palo santo, banana, cream, and roasted buckwheat. Sweet cream and herbal, floral notes hit first, followed by the subtle taste of cognac. Then the sweetness of banana came through, finishing with a nutty flavor from chewing the roasted buckwheat on top.
After one sip my eyes went wide and I kept muttering to myself how good it was, until finally, when the next dish arrived, I blurted out to the staff, "This is so good!!!" haha. Of the four we drank that night, Dancer on Stage was my favorite. I'm definitely coming back for this one!!
Painting cocktail 2: Water Lily Pond

Next was Water Lily Pond, made with dry sherry wine, fig, cherry blossom, soda, herb oil, and celery pickle. It was moderately sweet with a bit of fizz, giving it an overall clean feel. True to its name, the flavor faintly evoked a pond dotted with water lilies.
I liked Dancer on Stage more, while my partner preferred Water Lily Pond. Neither was a flavor that would sharply divide people's taste, but somehow we each picked the one that suited us best!
Painting cocktail 3: Summer Sunlight

The next cocktails were Summer Sunlight and The Scream. Summer Sunlight has yuzu, pear, lemongrass, kefir yogurt, and soda, topped with seasoned laver (dried seaweed). The way you're meant to drink it is fun too: take a bite of the laver, let it melt slightly in your mouth, then take a sip of the cocktail.
A salty ocean scent came through along with a tangy-sweet, refreshing taste. When the laver met the cocktail, it strangely evoked the sea. It felt like sipping a cocktail on a beach during a European trip, which made me oddly happy.
Painting cocktail 4: The Scream

Last was the intensely named Scream. It's made with peated whisky, calvados, Averna, bay leaf, cinnamon, and pepper. Unusually, they lit orange peel on fire and dripped the resulting oil into the cocktail. It added a faint smoky note that suited the dramatic name well.
This one is 32% ABV, notably stronger than the cocktails before it. The flavor and aroma were heavier too, so I'd personally recommend sipping this one slowly.
Food to pair with cocktails at Rosetta

While we were drinking, our food order arrived — cuttlefish ragu linguine! It's squid-ink pasta noodles stir-fried in tomato sauce with cuttlefish, broccoli, and other ingredients. The cuttlefish was tender and delicious, and the ink pasta had a distinct, noticeable ink flavor.

The fruit-cheese platter paired nicely as a general drinking snack. That day it came with green grapes and peach, and since they'd run out of chocolate, we got candied walnuts instead. The jamón, cheese, candied walnuts, and fruit were all delicious and went well with both cocktails and whisky.
Is Rosetta worth it? Final verdict on this Hongdae cocktail bar
I visited while looking for a good-atmosphere cocktail bar in Hongdae, and the art-cocktail concept was distinct, plus the drinks were genuinely delicious. It wasn't just a painting's name slapped on a menu — each cocktail's ingredients, flavor, and drinking method were designed to evoke that painting's mood, which made it even more fun. Dancer on Stage was my favorite, and I'd order it again next time.
It's great for enjoying the atmosphere at the outdoor tables, and the interior feels like stepping into a European bar — a good spot when you want something special to drink on a Hongdae date. If you like European vibes or want something more unusual than an ordinary cocktail, it's fun to pick an art cocktail of your own. I'd originally planned on just two drinks that night and ended up with four. Planning to go back for Dancer on Stage! Definitely visit here on a Hongdae date.
