Mapo restaurant for charcoal-grilled meat and pot rice: Gyudo

In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a gyukatsu restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, where guests finish smoked beef cutlet and yakiniku on a tabletop grill. I tried the two-person set with gamtae pollock roe, hot pot-cooked rice, and a choice of broths. Verdict: the fun of grilling it yourself with hot rice was the standout.

Gyukatsu meal at Gyudo near Mapo Station

A gyukatsu standard near Mapo Station

Signature dishes at Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch

“Setting the standard for gyukatsu. Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch.” I came here because I wanted a slightly special dinner around Mapo. This time, I visited Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch. I love gyukatsu, so I have been to quite a few places, but this one felt a little different from the entrance onward.

At first I wondered what the name “Gyudo” meant, but from the atmosphere to the menu, it gave me the feeling that they were determined to do gyukatsu properly, like a true specialist. It was a place with a really nice atmosphere even before going in.

A warm wood-toned dining room

This is what the entrance looks like. Rather than the bright, casual restaurants you see everywhere these days, it uses wood and fabric to create the mood of a traditional Japanese home. I thought it would make quite a good first impression for a date or a blind date, too.

Once you go inside, the atmosphere becomes even clearer. From the ceiling decorations to the walls and tables, everything is done in warm wood tones, and the wall art and straw decorations also catch your eye.

Along with table seating, there are also seats for dining alone like these, so it looked like a low-pressure option for anyone looking for a solo meal near Mapo Station. On the other hand, there are tables for several people as well, making the layout suitable for a family meal or gathering.

A two-person set with gyukatsu and yakiniku

While looking over the menu, the two-person set immediately caught my eye. The set I saw included a smoked gyukatsu set meal, a smoked yakiniku set meal, gamtae (seaweed) pollock roe, and a drink choice. Since you can try one of each, this combination looked like a pretty good choice for a first visit instead of debating two individual dishes.

It is not just gyukatsu; there is also a smoked yakiniku set meal, so you can choose according to your taste. We were curious about both, so naturally, one of each!

And then, at last, the full spread arrived. It is not the kind of place where the meat is simply dropped onto a plate; everything from the pot-cooked rice to cabbage, sauces, salt, and side dishes comes out neatly as a set. The key point is that every seat has its own little grill for cooking the meat yourself. Rather than eating fully finished gyukatsu, you can cook each piece to the degree you like. The meat looked seriously good from the start~~

Meat cooked on a tabletop grill

Finish it on the grill just how you like

Up close, this is what the meat looked like. The marbling was quite distinct, and it was not sliced too thin, so it looked perfect for finishing on the grill. Even while taking photos, I wanted to put it on right away, haha.

Put the meat on the blazing-hot grill and it immediately goes sizzle—! I think this is one of the fun parts of eating at Gyudo. Since the meat is already partly cooked, you do not need to wait long; just cook both sides as much as you want.

Smoked meat on the tabletop grill

At first I cooked it carefully because I was worried about overcooking it, but after a few pieces you quickly get the hang of it. It is good lightly cooked and juicy, or cooked a little more until nicely browned. There is definitely fun in cooking it to your preference. It was even better with rice^^

The combination of pot-cooked rice and a piece of meat

And what I liked as much as the meat was the rice. The moment I opened the pot lid, hot steam rose up, and somehow that small thing felt incredibly nice.

Steaming pot-cooked rice

There was even a piece of kabocha squash on top, and the rice grains had such a lovely sheen. Meat really does call for white rice.

Put a piece of nicely grilled meat over the hot rice and eat it… this really needs no explanation, haha. With the savory flavor of the meat and rice together, it felt much more satisfying and enjoyable than eating the meat alone.

Grilled meat placed over rice

You can add a little rice for a bite-sized mouthful, and I also recommend dipping it lightly in salt.

Grilled meat eaten with salt

The sauces are good too, but if you want to taste the meat itself, I recommend adding just a little salt. Not a lot—really just a touch. The salty note made the meat's savory flavor come through more clearly.

Gyukatsu, gamtae pollock roe, and soba on the side

And of course, the gyukatsu! The gyukatsu also gets another turn on the grill. The meat inside the breading stays juicy, so you can put it on the grill and cook it as much as you like. Crispy outside, moist inside. Its texture is completely different from the yakiniku, so if two people visit, ordering one of each and sharing is a great way to go.

Gamtae pollock roe is a nice accompaniment to enjoy in between.

The gamtae pollock roe came with the set. When you keep eating meat, sometimes you need a different flavor in the middle, and the ocean aroma of the gamtae and saltiness of the roe felt like they refreshed the palate. It also goes well with rice.

There was soba on the side, too~~

Kakiage hot soba menu item

On the menu, I also saw Jeju green tangerine cold soba and kakiage (vegetable fritter) hot soba. The warm soba topped with tempura was nice with its broth and made a good finish after the meat.

Cold soba topped with green tangerine

The cold soba generously topped with green tangerine looked incredibly refreshing from the visuals alone. If you want to finish cleanly after eating meat, adding a soba dish like this would be a good option.

Choose your own broth, plus pot-rice refills

And this broth station was fun.

Hot broth station inside the restaurant

I spotted something interesting on one side of the restaurant. They had hot roasted barley tea, katsuobushi (bonito flake) broth, and tonkotsu (pork bone) broth prepared.

Guide to roasted barley tea and broth choices

The roasted barley tea is nutty and clean; choose the katsuobushi broth when you want umami, or the tonkotsu broth when you want a richer flavor. Being able to choose according to your taste was quite unique.

Pot-cooked rice refills are available, too!

Pot-cooked rice refill notice

And here is the part rice lovers will be happy about. If you want more pot-cooked rice, there is a separate setup for refills. You cannot skip making sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) to finish, right? Haha.

A meal remembered for the fun of grilling it yourself

So~ that wrapped up a delicious meal.

If you are looking for a slightly special meal near Mapo Station, Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch felt, overall, like more than a place to eat a plate of gyukatsu—it was fun because you also get to enjoy the process of grilling it yourself. The restaurant has a calm atmosphere, with everything from seats for solo diners to tables for groups, so it looked suitable for different occasions, including eating alone near Mapo Station, a blind date, a family meal, or a family gathering.

Especially if you are searching for a good restaurant around Mapo Station or Gongdeok Station and want something a little different from an ordinary meat dish, it is worth putting on your list. Meat sizzling over the grill, a spoonful of hot pot-cooked rice, and a piece of meat. That combination is still what I remember most^^
