Korean restaurant in Goyang for spicy beef soup: Doonjeong

At Doonjeong in Hyangdong, I had spicy Korean beef soup, Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef mixed rice), and a platter of dressed beef. I went because I usually enjoy gomtang (beef soup), and the gently spicy broth and tender meat stayed with me.

Where is Doonjeong, and where can I park?

The address is 1F, 130 Kkotnaeeum 1-gil, Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi-do. Parking was not available in front of the restaurant, but I could use Hyangdong 1 Public Parking Lot right next door. The hours recorded in the original post were 11:00–21:00, with a break time from 14:00–17:00.

I went in with expectations after hearing that it had received a Blue Ribbon for its Korean beef soup.

What were reservations and seating like?

There were many diners when I visited, so I would recommend making a Naver reservation before going. The interior felt neat and polished.

There were both tables for two and group seating, as well as separate clothes hangers. I also saw several staff members working.

What are the menu prices and side dishes like?

The prices I recorded during my visit were ₩15,000 for Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap, ₩13,000 for spicy Korean beef soup, ₩12,000 for clear Korean beef soup, and ₩16,000 for dressed Korean beef tripe. I liked having a choice between spicy and clear broth.

When I sat down, they served kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and kimchi. They arrived neatly arranged in bowls.

I ordered the spicy Korean beef soup, Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap, and a platter of dressed beef. Overall, the meat I tried was soft and tender.

The Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap came with Korean beef radish soup. I enjoyed the accompanying soup as well.

How spicy was the Korean beef soup?

The spicy Korean beef soup arrived piping hot and bubbling. When I tried the broth first, it was gently spicy with the savory flavor of Korean beef.

The heat was joined by a beefy aroma, making the broth deep and rich. The meat was tender to chew, and the warm soup was the kind of flavor that could come to mind after a night of drinking.

What did the dressed beef platter taste like?

The dressed beef was boiled brisket and assorted vegetables tossed in a sweet-and-sour, spicy dressing. The brisket was tender and mild, while the vegetables were crisp, so the textures worked well together.

The sour flavor came through first in each bite, followed by the subtle beefy aroma and chewy texture of the brisket. The dressing and vegetables made the meat feel refreshing to eat.

How did the Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap differ from the soup?

The Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap was topped generously with yukhoe. Mixing the soft, nutty-tasting raw beef with crisp vegetables and rice brought together the savory flavor of the beef and the freshness of the vegetables.

Unlike the gently spicy soup, the yukhoe bibimbap centered on a subtle sweetness and nuttiness. The more I chewed it with the rice, the more I tasted the mild flavor of Korean beef, without it feeling overpowering.

The three dishes I tried each had a different character—gently spicy, sour, and nutty—and all felt cleanly prepared. It is a place I would think of when I want a meal of Korean beef soup and bibimbap in Hyangdong.
