Korean BBQ in Anyang Megatria: thick pork neck and belly at Manshikine

Manshikine Sotddukkeong Samgyeopsal Megatria (만식이네 솥뚜껑삼겹살) is a Korean BBQ restaurant serving domestic pork belly and pork neck on the 1st floor of Central Tower 1 in the Megatria Complex 1 shopping arcade in Anyang, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the couple set (250g pork belly + 250g pork neck, ₩38,000) and grilled it with kimchi, bean sprouts and bracken on a cast-iron cauldron lid, and the complimentary seonjiguk (ox blood soup) was satisfying too. With a clean dining room and good value for money, Manshikine is an Anyang BBQ spot the writer wants to revisit.

Layered C-curl perm for wavy hair at Nabideu Hair, a Sejong hair salon

Nabideu Hair is a reservation-only hair salon on the 2nd floor of Winners Tower in Boram-dong, Sejong. Stuck in the awkward grow-out stage with frizzy, slightly wavy mid-length hair, the writer had the layers tidied with a cut at Nabideu Hair, then got a layered C-curl perm and a head spa, and now has hair that looks good even when simply towel-shaken dry. With one-on-one consultation, careful work and coffee and snacks provided, the Nabideu Hair visit was highly satisfying.

Handmade burger shop near Namdaemun: banana pudding dessert, Wit&Meat

Wit&Meat Seoul Station is an American-style handmade burger restaurant on the Grand Central lobby level near Exit 4 of Seoul Station, in Jung-gu, Seoul. The meal was the All Mighty Burger set (₩16,000) and the Chili Cheese Bacon Burger (₩12,800), with a ₩5,800 banana pudding of custard and banana crumble for dessert. The burgers at Wit&Meat Seoul Station are textbook handmade burgers, but the banana pudding is the real reason to save room.

Shabu-shabu restaurant near Seoul Station: course for two, Deungchon

Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Seoul Station branch is a shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on the first floor of Gateway Tower in Yongsan, Seoul, near Seoul Station Exit 11. Two diners ordered mushroom kalguksu for 2 at ₩22,000 plus one plate of beef at ₩11,000 and ate a full course of shabu-shabu, kalguksu and fried rice. The savory broth and the fried-rice-style finish stood out most. If you are looking for Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu at Seoul Station, this branch is worth a visit, and the fried rice should not be skipped.

Suwon men's salon: see-through dandy perm for flat, fine hair, Yuwolae

Yuwolae Mijangwon Suwon Gwanggyo Branch (유월애미장원 수원광교점) is a premium hair salon on the 8th floor of SK View Lake Tower near Gwanggyojungang Station in Suwon. The writer's fine men's hair went flat easily and looked shaggy, so Yuwolae Mijangwon first tidied it with a cut, then gave it a see-through dandy perm with thick rods for volume rather than curl, and the style came out exactly as hoped. Verdict: after more than 2 years of drifting between salons in Suwon, the writer decided to settle at Yuwolae Mijangwon.

Seoul eel restaurant office lunch near DMC: green tea eel bowl, Ryeok

Ryeok Minmul Jangeogui Jeonmunjeom (력 민물장어구이전문점) is a freshwater eel restaurant in Sangam-dong, Mapo, Seoul, near Exit 9 of Digital Media City Station. From the lunch specials, we ordered the teukjangeo deopbap (special eel rice bowl, ₩27,000) and the jeonbok jangeo sotbap (abalone-eel hot pot rice, ₩21,000). We ate the bowls with green tea poured over, mixed in butter, finished with nurungji (scorched rice), and got a Japanese-style set with chawanmushi, seaweed soup and dessert. Ryeok Minmul Jangeogui Jeonmunjeom is worth recommending for a restorative DMC office lunch or a team lunch.

Gwangju Sangmu window-seat pasta: shrimp rosé, jambon pizza, Bueokgan

Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is a pasta and brunch restaurant on Seogwangju-ro in Seo-gu, Gwangju, in the Sangmu district, decorated as a classic hotel dining room inspired by the Titanic ballroom. Two diners ordered three à la carte dishes — pastry soup for 10,000 won, shrimp rosé pasta for 20,000 won and jambon pizza for 24,000 won — and ate them at a sunlit window seat. The portions were a little much for two, but the food was good enough that the spoons never stopped, and Bueokgan Sangmu Branch felt like a place worth returning to for an anniversary or a celebration.
