Today's sushi set with futomaki and karaage cold udon: Ilpum Magok
In short
Ilpum Magok is a sushi restaurant with an open kitchen near Magok Station in Gangseo, Seoul. Two friends each ordered the today's sushi set for ₩28,000, getting sushi, futomaki, karaage cold udon, steamed egg, and a mango dessert all in one spread. The sushi rice was already seasoned so no soy sauce was needed, and both agreed the futomaki was the best part.

I went to Ilpum Magok with a friend while looking for lunch in Magok over the weekend. We came specifically to eat sushi in Magok, and the menu had so much variety — from the today's sushi set to kaisendon (seafood rice bowl), sashimidon, and futomaki (thick seaweed rice roll) — that it was fun just picking what to order.
The today's sushi set we had that day didn't come with just sushi — it also included futomaki, karaage cold udon, steamed egg, and dessert, so the spread was really varied. Out of everything, my friend and I liked the futomaki and karaage cold udon the most. Let's get into the detailed review!

Starting with the menu board

It was nice being able to check the menu ahead of time through Catch Table or Naver Reservation. Alongside the signature kaisendon, there were plenty of seafood rice bowl options like sashimidon, uni-doro-don, and unagi-don.

That day there was also a popup menu item, anki-mo hosomaki, and it looked pretty delicious in the photo haha. I wanted to try that on my next visit.
A Magok sushi spot with great date vibes

This was the atmosphere inside. It was decorated in warm wood tones overall, giving it a clean, calm Japanese restaurant feel.

Since the open kitchen was right in front, we could watch the chefs prepare the fish and make each piece of sushi by hand.

There were also separate 4-person tables toward the back. Being right next to the floor-to-ceiling windows kept it from feeling cramped, and the mood was nice too. If you're visiting as a pair, the counter seats work well, and for a bigger group, the tables would be better.
What we ordered

We both ordered the today's sushi set for ₩28,000. My friend and I both went with the same dish!
The today's sushi set spread

The today's sushi set arrived. It came with several types of sushi along with futomaki, karaage cold udon, steamed egg, and dessert.

At first I thought it would just be several pieces of sushi, but since it came as a whole spread with multiple dishes, it felt more filling than I expected.
The sushi varieties and seasoning

We started with the sushi, and it was made up of a good mix of salmon, shrimp, tuna, and more.

I like trying a little of many kinds rather than eating a lot of just one, so this kind of assortment worked well for me.

One thing I noticed while eating — the sushi rice itself was already seasoned, so I didn't need to dip it in soy sauce at all. It was fun trying each piece one by one.
The futomaki was the best of all

The thing my friend and I enjoyed the most that day was the futomaki. We both took a bite and immediately went, this is the best!!!! Haha, we both agreed the futomaki was the tastiest item.
Karaage cold udon — a first for me

The most surprising dish that day was the karaage cold udon. It was my first time trying udon (wheat noodles) with karaage (fried chicken) in it.

It was really tasty, more than I expected. The broth was sweet and salty, and it paired surprisingly well with the cold noodles.
Soft steamed egg too

Then there was the steamed egg that came with the set — I scooped up a spoonful to try.

It was as soft as pudding, with a texture that melted gently in the mouth.

The seafood flavor came through more strongly than the steamed egg I usually have. Eating the warm steamed egg in between bites of sushi was really nice.
And finally, dessert
Once we finished the meal, a mango-topped dessert came out.

It tasted soft and slightly tangy, like a mix of cream cheese and yogurt. The texture wasn't dense but rather smooth and soft, like sundubu (soft tofu)!
Eating it with the mango on top added sweetness that paired well. It was a nice light way to end the meal.
A Magok lunch spot enjoyed with a friend

My friend and I each had our own today's sushi set. If it had just been sushi alone it might have felt a bit ordinary, but since it came with futomaki, karaage cold udon, steamed egg, and dessert, we got to try a bit of everything, which was great.
