Gwanghwamun gyukatsu restaurant, NFC order at B1-63: Hurato Sikdang

In short

Hurato Sikdang Gyeongbokgung Main Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese beef cutlet) restaurant in unit 63 of the Royal Building arcade basement, one level below Gwanghwamun Station in Jongno, Seoul. On a weekday lunch visit, gyukatsu at 19,500 won and Japanese-style omurice at 14,500 won were ordered through the table NFC tag, then grilled two or three slices at a time for 20 to 30 seconds on a mini charcoal stove and eaten with salt and wasabi. The gyukatsu was tender all the way through with no chewy bits, making Hurato Sikdang an easy recommendation for lunch in Gwanghwamun.

I was trying to decide what to eat for lunch in Gwanghwamun and ended up at Hurato Sikdang Gyeongbokgung Main Branch, famous for its gyukatsu (beef cutlet) ✨

Turns out this is the same gyukatsu restaurant Yeongji mentioned loving on Chajwibul! We specifically went to the Gyeongbokgung Main Branch ☺️

Paid parking is available, but personally I'd recommend taking the subway instead of driving ✨ If you're visiting, the entrance that goes straight down to the basement, like in the photo, is the easiest way in.

How to find unit 63 in the Royal Building arcade basement

Path to Hurato Sikdang from the basement level 1 entrance

Go down to the basement level of the Royal Building arcade and head into the building. Once you're on B1, turn left and keep walking to find Hurato Sikdang. The store is unit 63, so keeping that number in mind makes it a lot easier to find!

Inside Hurato Sikdang: atmosphere and the busiest hours

The interior has a low-saturation color scheme overall, which gives it a cozy, calm feel — it also seemed fine for solo dining! Just a heads up, between 12 and 1pm it overlaps with office workers' lunch hour, so it tends to get crowded.

There was also a guide on the table for how to grill the gyukatsu for the best taste. If it's your first visit, you might wonder how to cook it yourself (I sure did), so having the instructions right there was really handy 👍 There's also a receipt event running, so if you're visiting, be sure to check that out too!

Gyukatsu at 19,500 won: how to grill it on the mini charcoal stove

The gyukatsu at Hurato Sikdang Gyeongbokgung Main Branch comes out nearly rare, and you grill it yourself on the mini stove at your table. I put on 2–3 slices at a time and grilled them for about 20–30 seconds — it was incredibly tender!

It wasn't long before the gyukatsu we'd been waiting for arrived!

Doesn't it look amazing just from the cross-section? ✨

Gyukatsu placed on the mini tabletop stove

The gyukatsu is served nearly rare, and you grill it as much as you like on the mini stove set up on the table. There were also mini tongs provided, which made flipping and moving the meat easy 🤭

I put 2–3 slices on at a time and grilled for about 20–30 seconds — so tender! Salt, chili sauce, and soy sauce were all set out alongside the gyukatsu, so you could mix and match to taste. Personally, out of all the combinations, I like the wasabi or salt pairing best ☺️

With no chewy bits, the tender gyukatsu paired really well with the sharp kick of wasabi and the saltiness. Add a spoonful of rice and it all went down so easily. Snacking on the crunchy, slightly sweet kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and jjangajji (pickled radish) in between kept it from getting repetitive all the way to the last bite 🤤

What does the Japanese-style omurice at 14,500 won taste like?

Hurato's Japanese-style omurice (₩14,500) is fluffy egg with sauce poured over it. To me, the sauce had a bit of a hashed rice feel.

Fluffy-looking Japanese-style omurice right from the start! Just pour the sauce over it ✨

The sauce felt somewhat like hashed rice sauce to me! With the soft egg and fried rice underneath, the whole dish was smooth and easy to eat 🫶

If you're in the mood for a rice dish or you like omurice, I'd recommend it! ✨

Naver Pay payment event at Hurato Sikdang

Notice for the Naver Pay points reward event

Right now Hurato Sikdang is running an event where paying with Naver Pay for ₩20,000 or more gets you an instant ₩5,000 Naver Points credit. As of my visit, the event was running through September 30, so if you're planning to visit during that window, be sure to check whether it still applies before you pay!

Is Hurato Sikdang worth it for lunch in Gwanghwamun?

There were solo diners too, and since it's fairly accessible if you have plans near Gwanghwamun or Gyeongbokgung, it seemed like a good lunch stop. Above all, the gyukatsu was so tender and delicious! 💕 If you're looking for a good lunch spot near Gyeongbokgung, or if you enjoy grilling your own gyukatsu, I'd recommend Hurato Sikdang Gyeongbokgung Main Branch!
