Gapyeong octopus rice bowl spot after bbaji water play: Paldang Jikhwa
In short
Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi is a flame-grilled jjukkumi (baby octopus) rice bowl and hot-plate stir-fry restaurant at 150 Hanseo-ro, Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi. After a day of bbaji water play in Gapyeong, the writer ordered the bul-jjuksam rice bowl, the bul-jjukkumi rice bowl and a pork cutlet, all served with hot-pot rice cooked the moment the order goes in and an all-you-can-eat self-serve bar of pan-fried tofu, tteokbokki, sundae and pink sausage. Smoky, spicy octopus mixed into just-cooked rice plus that generous self-serve bar made Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi a satisfying stop in Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong.

We'd gone bbaji (river tubing) in Gapyeong and afterward were craving something spicy with a good smoky char, so we searched around and found this place. The stir-fried octopus itself was great, but the freshly-cooked hot-pot rice and the self-serve bar rounded things out so well that I left very satisfied — here's the review!

Where is Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi, and is there parking?
Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi is a standalone building restaurant at 150 Hanseo-ro, Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong-gun. The big roadside sign reading "Paldang Jikhwa Jjukkumi" and the clean standalone building are easy to spot from the road. It's simple to find even on a first visit — no wandering around needed.

There's ample parking right in front of and beside the restaurant. It's really convenient not having to worry about parking when you drive there.

This is the entrance area. It's kept neat and tidy right from the door, so walking in felt pleasant.

Inside the restaurant: table spacing and solo seats
Walking into Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi, the stylish neon sign lighting caught my eye right away. It's a much brighter, trendier vibe than your typical rice restaurant, and I liked it.

The dining hall overall feels comfortable and the tables are spaced generously apart. It looked like a great spot for group gatherings or family outings too.

There's also solo seating like this, comfortable for eating alone.

What we ordered: bul-jjuksam bowl, bul-jjukkumi bowl and pork cutlet
This is the large menu board on the wall. The signature dishes were the grilled octopus rice bowl and the hot-plate stir-fry set. We ordered the bul-jjuksam rice bowl, the bul-jjukkumi rice bowl, and pork cutlet.

Right, octopus is low-calorie and won't make you gain weight — high protein, high nutrition!

Hot-pot rice cooked the moment you order
The rice cookers lined up along one wall caught my attention. Since the rice is freshly cooked the moment you order, I couldn't help but look forward to how it would taste.

They've thoughtfully provided baby chairs and hygienic disposable aprons for families with young children.

What's on the all-you-can-eat self-serve bar?
The self-serve bar at Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi is in the center of the restaurant and is all-you-can-eat. What struck me was how spotless everything was kept, not a single spill in sight.

The self-serve bar has a generous pile of savory, warm pan-fried tofu — a perfect thing to snack on before diving into the spicy octopus. There are also fries, which kids will love.

There's even soup-style tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) that looks as good as what you'd get at a proper street-food spot, so there's plenty to choose from. Glossy, chewy sundae (Korean blood sausage) is also up for grabs at the bar. By the time the main dish arrives, you're already getting full.

Nostalgic pan-fried pink sausage, golden and well-cooked — I went back for more of this a few times.

The basic banchan (side dishes) for mixing into the octopus bibimbap — crunchy bean sprouts, chives, radish salad, seaweed flakes — are also all neatly arranged.

How the flame-grilled octopus tastes mixed into the rice
We scooped the freshly-cooked rice into a big bowl, piled on crunchy bean sprouts, chives, and seaweed flakes, and got ready to mix everything together.

Here's today's main dish — the grilled octopus stir-fry! The red sauce carried a wonderful smoky aroma, and the octopus pieces were plump and generously portioned — it passed the visual test right away.

We piled the plump octopus stir-fry and sauce on top and mixed it all together, and a gorgeous octopus bibimbap came together that made your mouth water just looking at it. It's moderately spicy with a deep smoky flavor woven through — every bite hits just right.

Pork cutlet for kids and spice-shy eaters
This is the pork cutlet, a side dish for people who can't handle spicy food or for kids. The crispy coating topped with a sweet-savory sauce made for a really good combo.
Lastly, I filmed us mixing the plump, well-seasoned octopus stir-fry into the rice — you can really feel the chewy texture and spicy smoky flavor come through in the video.
Is Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi worth a stop in Gapyeong?
The quality of the main grilled octopus dish was excellent on its own, and with the freshly-cooked hot-pot rice and generous self-serve bar on top, this was a genuinely satisfying meal. If you're looking for a good restaurant around Seorak, Gapyeong, and you love spicy, smoky octopus, I definitely recommend giving this place a try!
