I was hunting for an izakaya in Sangnam-dong when I found Ganppa Maekju! Even from outside, the sign practically screamed Japan, so it wasn't hard to spot haha.

Ganppa Maekju set menu prices and how to order
At Ganppa Maekju Changwon Sangnam Hyeongje Branch, you order first at the counter right when you walk in. The set menus looked like good value, so I got the one with chicken skin tempura and two drafts.

The beer choices are just Ebisu and Sapporo draft. Sapporo draft is listed as the signature item, and it really was delicious! (I ordered Ebisu later too, but Sapporo is cheaper and tastier!!)

The draft beer pour: a performance with cream-like foam
When you order draft beer at Ganppa Maekju, staff wearing mics come up front and explain the process — and they do it with tons of enthusiasm for every single guest~~ They chill the glass, whip up dense cream-like foam, and let you take a sip right there at the counter before sending you to your seat haha. This place... you can really feel how serious they are about beer haha. It felt like they were teaching us the best way to enjoy draft beer!! Haha.
Can you see that foam..? So dense and genuinely delicious! I have no idea how they get a draft machine to produce something that looks like cream beer~ It was fun just watching.
They skimmed the top off gently to give us the best-tasting sip. They dip the glass in water and there's foam running everywhere, but by the time they hand it to you, the glass is spotless with not a drop on it? So strange... haha.
Right there on the spot, we took a quick sip before being led to our seats.
Standing-only interior: is Ganppa Maekju good for a second round?
Inside Ganppa Maekju, it's all standing, no chairs! I'd only heard that this style of bar exists in Japan, and this was my first time experiencing it in Korea haha. It felt exactly right for a light second round of drinks!
We got a spot where you can sort of lean against the wall haha. It was a different kind of experience, and fun.
The inside is super Japan-Japan, right? The staff walk around playing games and making small talk — they're extremely friendly. If you win a game, they give out freebies, extra beer, and run all kinds of events!
The middle is an open kitchen, so you can watch the food being made too~ The flyers on the walls were fun to look at one by one while waiting haha.
A Changwon bar where beer with no food is fine
If you're full, it's totally fine to order just drinks. At most Korean bars, ordering food along with drinks is basically an unwritten rule, and ordering only alcohol tends to get you side-eye... but at Ganppa Maekju, it's fine to just have a light beer and leave. I wish more places like this existed.
Fried chicken skin or meat-loaded yakisoba: which one wins?
The Ganppa chicken skin tempura came with mayonnaise sauce and cabbage.
Crispy, tasty chicken skin tempura ~ perfect beer snack.
But honestly, the real winner was this yakisoba. Salty and insanely full of umami! You have to order the yakisoba haha. For that moment, it genuinely felt like Japan~
Loaded with bonito flakes, cabbage, and plenty of meat — this yakisoba was genuinely delicious~~
A flavor that demands beer!
And then the Ebisu we ordered as an extra. This was good too, but Sapporo was way tastier haha.
A happy evening~ This is a place you can casually come with a noisy group of friends, no pressure.
Ganppa Maekju made me feel like I was on a little trip. Turns out it's a chain, so I should check out the other locations too haha.
There's even a photo booth in one corner that prints instantly, which is wild haha. I'd seen Ganppa Maekju popping up everywhere lately, and visiting it turned out to be more fun and fresh than I expected~!
