Why we picked Cafe Dongi in Dongseong-ro, Daegu, for a birthday lunch

Today I visited Cafe Dongi, famous as a Dongseong-ro restaurant in Daegu! I never expected to eat such a neat, well-set table on a Daegu trip~~~🤍

It was my birthday, so I decided to go eat Korean food that I love, and that's how I ended up at Cafe Dongi, this well-known Dongseong-ro restaurant in Daegu. Turns out Dongseong-ro is actually the main branch! Of course the main branch tastes the best!!!😝

Cafe Dongi is on the 2nd floor, so you take the dedicated elevator up, and even just a glimpse shows how clean and tidy it looks!

Inside Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch: seating and atmosphere

Here's the inside of Cafe Dongi, a well-known Dongseong-ro restaurant in Daegu! It was bigger than I expected, and even though it opens at 11 and we arrived around 11:20, there were already quite a few guests, with more coming in constantly! The whole place had a warm white-and-wood tone. Wood interiors are my absolute favorite 🤎

At the counter, the staff were super busy prepping food. Even while we were looking around, we kept hearing the order notification sound go off! And they even have baby chairs ready! Since the space isn't small, it also seemed like a great spot for a family meal out.

Self-serve bar with unlimited fried eggs, rice and gangjeong

On one side of Cafe Dongi, scissors, sauce, gangjeong, rice, and heotgae tea were all available unlimited! And on the other side there's even an unlimited fried-egg corner.

Egg prices are still pretty high these days, so unlimited fried eggs?! No extra charge for a bowl of rice at a Korean restaurant, unlimited refills, and even gangjeong for dessert, unlimited too — I really felt like this was such good value,,🥹 It really felt like the owner serves up a truly generous spread!

Each table has a tablet ready, which must be convenient both for the busy staff and for customers! A moment where the owner's thoughtfulness really shows✨💛💛 And you can pay right at the table too, which made it even more convenient hahaha

We ordered from the table and immediately went to fry our own eggs! Cooking oil and salt were all set up too, which was so nice haha I'm not a fan of soft yolks, I'm team well-done, so I cooked mine all the way through!

After frying our eggs~ my friends who'd been drinking the night before saw the heotgae tea (raisin tree tea) and insisted they had to have some hahaha, so we each downed a cup.

While we sat and waited a bit, the serving robot brought our food over so cutely!? haha

It happened to be my actual birthday, so after an ID check I used the coupon and got the mini tangsuyuk too, making for a truly generous spread haha😝

[Solo grill] Grandma's grilled octopus

The [Solo grill] Grandma's grilled octopus came with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), dried radish strips, stir-fried fish cake, pickled radish, and when you lift the lid off the octopus sauce dish, there's omija tea (five-flavor berry tea) inside! Just looking at it, you can tell the seasoning is going to be good!?

First off, the doenjang jjigae had a deep soybean paste flavor with just the right hint of spiciness that I personally love! Eating the octopus with white rice and stir-fried onion in one bite, it was spicy, but the rice tamed the heat nicely, so it worked out great!?

Shoulder-cut Japanese curry

The shoulder-cut Japanese curry came with the same basic side dishes, but the soup was miyeokguk (seaweed soup)! The shoulder cut wasn't tough at all, so soft and easy to swallow, and it paired really well with the curry!?

[Solo grill] Grilled jeyuk (spicy pork)

My fiancé had the [Solo grill] Grilled pork jeyuk — I think he genuinely just loves jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork),, wherever there's jeyuk on the menu, he always orders it haha. It came out with the same sides as the grandma's grilled octopus.

Maybe because it's directly grilled, there was a smoky char flavor and it was a bit spicy! Spicy, but still just right when eaten with rice, so even people who aren't great with spice could probably enjoy it!! Looking at it again made me want to wrap it in lettuce right away ㅜ🥹

Bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap with perilla seaweed soup

The bulgogi yeolmu bibimbap was what I ordered!!! I'd been craving yeolmu bibimbap for a few days, and honestly, the reason I chose Cafe Dongi in the first place was because they had it on the menu — I saw it and went 'that's the place for me!!' haha,,

I mixed in the bibimbap sauce to my taste, stirred it well with the rice, and took a bite with the yeolmu (young radish greens), bulgogi, and egg all together — it felt like a wish come true, if that makes sense,,? So, so good 🥹

And the miyeokguk was perilla seed miyeokguk! I don't usually eat perilla-based miyeokguk much, but since it was my birthday I figured I should have some miyeokguk, and I finished the whole bowl,,🤍 Maybe it was because it felt like being celebrated, but I loved it even more!

And here's the tangsuyuk served as the September birthday treat! It came with rice cakes alongside the tangsuyuk!? Crispy on the outside, and the meat inside was so tender!! It wasn't tough at all, which I really liked. The sauce had lemon in it too, so it was nicely tangy.

There's also a waiting area on one side of the restaurant, so guests who are waiting for a table can sit down comfortably — I thought that was a nice touch. It really felt like the owner put a lot of thought into the customer's experience, which made me like the place even more✨💛

The restroom is inside the restaurant too and was nice and clean! Every place I visit seems to have a clean restroom — am I just lucky~~🤎

Is Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch worth it?

Visiting Cafe Dongi, a well-known Dongseong-ro restaurant in Daegu, the prices weren't expensive either, so I really loved that I could get a generous, filling meal at great value.

The unlimited fried eggs, gangjeong, and rice made a huge impression, and giving a ₩9,900 tangsuyuk as a birthday treat felt like such a great event from a customer's perspective haha🥹💛 The restaurant is spacious too, so it's great for groups, family gatherings, or dates — honestly, I don't think there was a single thing to complain about haha.
