I visited Bibisam Gwacheon Main Branch for a filling Korean meal in Gwacheon at a reasonable price. My companion and I shared bulgogi bibimbap, hot-stone octopus fish roe rice, and tteokgalbi. We could try both rice dishes, and the portions were generous.

What were the lunch wait and atmosphere like?

There was a wait even though I visited at an in-between lunch hour. Fortunately, we were next in line, and tables turned over fairly quickly. The interior was clean and comfortable, and it felt like a casual Korean restaurant for a meal alone or with colleagues.

The restaurant was kept clean. Even as guests continued to arrive, the owner kindly explained how to order and participate in the event.

How much are the bibimbap and tteokgalbi sets?

The main dishes are Hwangdeung-style torim bibimbap, made by soaking the rice in broth, and hot-stone fish roe rice. At the time of my visit, vegetable bibimbap started at ₩9,000 and bulgogi bibimbap was ₩10,000. Octopus bibimbap and Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap were also available.

There were also sets pairing bibimbap with tteokgalbi, a grilled minced-meat patty, on a griddle. I could choose domestic pork or Korean beef tteokgalbi, and the Korean beef tteokgalbi was ₩6,500 à la carte. Bibimbap and Korean beef tteokgalbi sets started at ₩13,500, depending on the menu.

What did the bulgogi bibimbap and tteokgalbi taste like?

I chose the octopus fish roe rice, while my companion chose bulgogi bibimbap, and we ordered one domestic pork and one Korean beef tteokgalbi set. Sharing them gave us a more varied meal, and both of us ate until we were full.

Hwangdeung-style bibimbap is prepared by soaking the rice in broth before adding the ingredients and seasoning. The seasoning had soaked between the grains of rice, so I did not need to mix it for long.

The bulgogi bibimbap had sweet bulgogi and vegetables, so I thought it would be a good choice when I did not want an overly intense flavor. Once mixed evenly, the bulgogi's sweetness went well with the fresh texture of the vegetables.

The Korean beef tteokgalbi arrived on a warm griddle. With rice, vegetables, and meat, it made for a filling meal.

The Korean beef tteokgalbi was thick but not tough, and it was easy to eat with the soft-cooked egg on top.

Was the hot-stone octopus fish roe rice filling enough?

The hot-stone octopus fish roe rice and Korean beef tteokgalbi griddle set was listed in the original post at ₩16,500. The fish roe rice arrived in a hot stone bowl, so I could eat it warm through the end of the meal.

The flying fish roe popped, while the octopus added chewiness. I was especially pleased that there was more octopus than I expected. For me, it was a sufficiently filling portion even without adding tteokgalbi.

I also mixed the spicy cockle salad I received through the review event into the fish roe rice. Its regular price listed in the original post was ₩6,000. The seafood tasted fresh, and adding the seaweed flakes later gave it more nuttiness and savory depth.

What kind of lunch does it suit?

I felt Bibisam suited a solo meal nearby or a relaxed Korean meal with colleagues or family. I would choose the hot-stone octopus fish roe rice for something spicy, or the bulgogi bibimbap for a milder flavor. The rice dishes alone were filling, and the tteokgalbi set was satisfying on days when I wanted meat alongside them.
