Seogwipo Korean restaurant with sanjeok and nurungji: Tamra Hansang

In short

Tamra Hansang is a Jeju home-style Korean restaurant on Taepyeong-ro 353beon-gil in Seogwipo. The braised mackerel set for two costs 60,000 won and arrives like a course: seasonal flatfish, cutlassfish, mackerel and sweet shrimp sashimi, fried cutlassfish, sanjeok (skewered grilled meat), stone-pot rice and nurungji (scorched rice) to finish. When you want sashimi and a braised fish dish in one sitting, the Tamra Hansang set was the most generous choice in Seogwipo.

I love mackerel and eat it a lot normally, so once I got to Jeju I wanted braised mackerel too. Looking around, I found a place where you can also enjoy all kinds of seasonal sashimi! I love sashimi a ton as well, so even better haha. With fried cutlassfish, sanjeok, and stone-pot rice on top of everything, it's a hearty, well-rounded spread — let me introduce "Tamra Hansang."

Inside Tamra Hansang: baby chairs and plenty of group seating

Tamra Hansang is said to be a Seogwipo Korean restaurant known for local Jeju home-style food. The space is large with plenty of seating, and since there are baby chairs, I saw families having a late breakfast together. Pretending not to notice a baby crying while eating, the parents kept soothing and feeding the baby — looked like hard work! It's also great for group meals, and since the food comes out generously filling the whole table, it seems like a solid, filling meal option while traveling in Jeju.

Side dishes and the seasonal sashimi plate

The basic banchan (side dishes) include salad, seasoned eggplant, kimchi, aged kimchi, stir-fried fish cake, marinated shrimp, pickled onions, and gim (seaweed).

Before the braised mackerel, all kinds of seasonal sashimi come out, and since I could eat my favorite kinds, I was happy — flatfish, cutlassfish, mackerel, and shrimp sashimi, all of it!!! They told us to eat the mackerel sashimi wrapped in gim with pickled onion, and it tasted clean with no fishy taste at all. Overall the sashimi was fresh and delicious with no fishy flavor, and being able to try a bit of each kind was great >_<

How were the fried cutlassfish and sanjeok skewers?

Can you see how nicely fried the cutlassfish is??? It was totally crispy outside, tender inside, so good I went back for more right after the first bite, and dipping it in the sauce made it even better. Getting a spread this generous before even reaching the braised mackerel — pretty recommendable, right?!

You also get to try sanjeok (grilled skewered meat), and eating meat after sashimi felt somehow satisfying and hearty. The seasoning came together really well — delicious!

The braised mackerel, stone-pot rice and nurungji

Then the braised mackerel and stone-pot rice arrive, and the sauce looks like it's packed with savory depth — with ginkgo nuts and potato in the rice, it looks so generous and appetizing just to look at~~~ Even while writing this post I want to eat it again, that's how good it looked, and it really was delicious — I dug into the rice and mackerel with real enthusiasm!!!

You have to scoop the rice out of the stone pot first~~~ Thinking about eating the nurungji (scorched rice) afterward made me so happy!!!

The braised mackerel has big, chunky pieces of fish, and you can tell the sauce is packed with savory depth just by looking — it looks delicious, right? Normally I just grill mackerel at home, and as a cooking-illiterate person living alone, I can't make braised mackerel at home, so I made sure to enjoy every bit of it here!!! Looking at it again, it's a spicy, rich braise, so I put it over rice, dunked it right into the mackerel sauce, and mixed it all together with the rice~

Spicy braise with big chunks of mackerel

The mackerel flesh wasn't dry at all — really tender, and it went so well with the sauce, sweet and spicy and delicious~ My boyfriend picked out the bones for me so I could eat comfortably, and it made me happy seeing him enjoy it too, like it suited his taste! No fishy taste at all, and the spicy, punchy sauce was truly top-notch~

The braised radish had the sauce soaked in well too, and the mackerel pieces were so big that I picked them apart with real dedication — funny how proud that made me feel~

I finished cleanly with the nurungji — I was too busy eating to take a photo, but it was delicious with kimchi!

Coffee after the meal and the final verdict on Tamra Hansang

You can see traces of past visitors at Tamra Hansang, and there's a coffee corner set up so you can grab a cup after your meal. I had the braised mackerel set at "Tamra Hansang," a spot known among Seogwipo locals, and it really came out generous! With all kinds of seasonal sashimi, fried cutlassfish, and stone-pot rice, it's a well-rounded, satisfying meal, and I truly, truly, truly enjoyed it. When you're in Seogwipo and want sashimi plus grilled cutlassfish, braised cutlassfish, braised mackerel, or dombe pork all at once, there's no need to think twice — I'd come back 200%. If you want a full, filling table of Korean food done right, give Tamra Hansang a try!
