In short

Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, near Mangwon Station. I enjoyed the generous medium bossam platter and extra-large bibim kalguksu, with especially moist, tender pork. Verdict: Order the bibim kalguksu with the bossam!

I went to Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch (평이담백 뼈칼국수 본점) for dinner near Mangwon Station. This bossam spot, one of the restaurants in Hongdae Seoul visitors may want to know about, lets you enjoy bossam suyuk (boiled pork slices) and kalguksu together. The bossam suyuk was seriously, seriously tender, so I had such a delicious meal haha.

Here is the exterior. The large sign saying “Ppyeo Kalguksu” makes it easy to spot as you pass by. Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch has also been featured for its bone kalguksu and bibim kalguksu on Delicious Guys and Live Today Evening. I was curious about the noodles shown on TV too, but on this day I ordered bossam suyuk and bibim kalguksu!

Inside, there is a wood-toned interior and several tables. It has an overall comfortable, tidy feel that makes it nice for a meal. The kalguksu here is seriously a real favorite, so there were lots of people dining alone, as well as friends and coworkers coming for a meal.

Bossam suyuk and bibim kalguksu prices

I took photos of the menu too. The medium bossam suyuk is ₩42,000 and the large is ₩49,000. Bibim kalguksu is ₩11,500, and we added ₩1,000 for the extra-large serving—it was seriously a lot of food!!! At first I wondered if the bossam suyuk was a bit pricey, but no. There is truly so much meat. Seriously, seriously, and it is all lean meat, yet so delicious lol. Phew, I want to eat it again.

Side dishes served with the bossam

First, the side dishes to have with the bossam arrived. There was napa cabbage, kimchi, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), seasoned vegetables, salted shrimp, ssamjang (savory dipping paste), garlic, and peppers—such a generous spread of everything needed for bossam. There was plenty of kimchi and seasoned vegetables too, so it was nice to mix things up throughout the meal, and above all, the kimchi was seriously delicious.

The medium bossam suyuk platter surprised me with its size

Then the medium bossam suyuk appeared! I was surprised by the amount when it first came out lol. The plate was piled high with meat. Even the medium size was truly plentiful—enough to make two people really full. All those side dishes on the table, plus bibim kalguksu too lol.

Up close, the pork slices are quite thick too. The ratio of fatty meat to lean meat was just right, and the pork was so moist and tender. It tastes even better in person ㅠㅡㅠ It has been such a long time since I had bossam suyuk this tender. The lean meat was not dry, while the fatty parts were not heavy, so even eating the meat on its own was delicious!!

Bossam wrapped with napa cabbage and seasoned vegetables

I put bossam on napa cabbage and wrapped it up with seasoned vegetables and garlic too lol. The moist pork and crisp cabbage made for such a great texture, and honestly, that deliciousness just burst in my mouth.

Even when I piled on plenty of kimchi or seasoned vegetables, the thick pork still had a real presence. For anyone looking for bossam around Hongdae, I would like to recommend this suyuk.

A bite of bossam with napa cabbage and seasoned vegetables

When you lift a piece with chopsticks, you can really see its thickness and tender grain! It was delicious with kimchi on top in one bite, or simply with a little salted shrimp. Personally, the bossam suyuk was so good that I kept reaching for it. It was the most memorable dish of the day—enough that I want to call it a great suyuk spot in Hapjeong... My friend said they would like to have a company dinner here lol.

My first extra-large bibim kalguksu

Next came the extra-large bibim kalguksu (mixed knife-cut noodles). A huge bowl was generously topped with kalguksu noodles, vegetables, seaweed flakes, and garnishes. It was my first time having bibim kalguksu, and it felt quite new because it was different from regular spicy mixed noodles—but it was seriously delicious!

Maybe because we ordered the extra-large serving, the portion was so generous, and the kalguksu texture was even chewier and more delicious when eaten as bibim noodles!

I mixed the noodles and vegetables vigorously so they would be evenly coated in the bibim sauce at the bottom! The more I mixed, the more the red seasoning soaked in, and it looked even more delicious ㅠㅠ The bibim sauce was seriously tasty. It really whetted my appetite, so even though I was full, I finished every last bit without leaving anything behind..

Because they are kalguksu noodles, they are thick, springy, and wonderfully chewy. The bibim sauce clung right to the noodles, and though it was my first time trying this noodle-and-sauce combination, it was seriously good. It was my first bibim kalguksu, and I truly, truly enjoyed it .><

Having spicy bibim kalguksu between bites of the tender bossam made these two dishes an especially great combination.

Bibim kalguksu served alongside bossam

I ate kimchi with the bibim kalguksu, and also had it with the bossam suyuk. The moist pork, chewy kalguksu noodles, and delicious bibim sauce came together all at once, so I could eat until the end without getting tired of it. The bossam is delicious on its own, but definitely order the bibim kalguksu alongside it! Recommended!

At first I said the portion was huge, but as I ate, the plate ended up spotless - >< - I was satisfied with the tender bossam suyuk, and the bibim kalguksu I tried for the first time was exactly my style too! It is great for two people to have a hearty meal, and also for a group to share bossam and kalguksu, so I recommend it for company dinners or gatherings with friends. I had a delicious, filling meal at Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch!
