A bowl of wang galbitang at Achasan Tong Galbitang

When the weather swings back and forth like this with big temperature gaps between day and night, I find myself craving something hot and hearty in soup form. This time I went with my kid for weekend lunch to Achasan Tong Galbitang (아차산통갈비탕), located on Jayang-ro in Gwangjin-gu. It felt like the perfect menu for building up some energy in this kind of weather.

Where Achasan Tong Galbitang is and when it opens

Achasan Tong Galbitang is at 306 Jayang-ro, 1st floor, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, near Achasan Station on Line 5. Hours are 11:00–21:00, with a break time from 15:30 to 17:00.

It's close enough to Achasan Station to make it a good stop after hiking Achasan mountain, or just a solid pick when you need a filling meal nearby. It really is within easy walking distance of the station.

Where to park near Achasan Tong Galbitang

Guui 2-dong public parking lot across from the restaurant

There's no dedicated parking lot, but there is a Guui 2-dong public parking lot right across the street. It's supposedly very cheap at ₩800 an hour, but since I visited on a holiday it was full and I couldn't use it. In that case, there's also the Guui 2-dong complex parking lot about a 12-minute walk away.

How long is the wait at 1pm on a holiday?

Entrance of Achasan Tong Galbitang near Achasan Station

The restaurant sits in a residential area, so it's easy enough to spot as you pass by near Achasan Station. I visited around 1pm on a holiday and there was a wait — about 15 minutes I think. A lot of the people waiting had clearly just come down from hiking Achasan. Also, the kimchi here is domestically sourced, and the kkakdugi (radish kimchi) is made in-house!

Inside the restaurant: seating

Interior with 4-person tables

Inside there are several 4-person tables, which would work well for family gatherings. When I visited, everyone around me was there with family too. Even though it was the busiest lunch peak time, the interior was kept clean and well-run.

How Achasan Tong Galbitang simmers its galbitang

Posted notice explaining the galbitang cooking process

The most impressive part of Achasan Tong Galbitang was honestly how much care goes into making the galbitang.

They prepare the ribs fresh every day, soak them for 12 hours to draw out the blood, wash them thoroughly, then par-boil them with various ingredients for about an hour. And that's not even the end — they remove the fat and simmer the meat for over 6 hours while trimming it, then add nutritious ingredients and seasoning and simmer it again for another 1.5 hours. Basically a whole tonic in a bowl, right?

Menu and prices

The signature menu items are

  • Meat-packed arongsatae galbitang ₩19,000
  • Wongi-hoebok wang galbitang ₩16,000
  • Special gigyeok-hoebok galbitang ₩18,000

There's also a braised beef ribs (galbi-jjim) menu. I liked that it's not just one galbitang option — you can choose based on the amount or cut of meat you want. The name alone on the 'meat-packed arongsatae galbitang' would catch the eye of anyone who loves meat.

What we ordered was the small soy braised beef ribs for ₩48,000 and the wongi-hoebok wang galbitang for ₩16,000.

Side dishes and what's on the self-serve bar

Table setting with kkakdugi, chili, onion, and ssamjang side dishes

The basic side dishes were kkakdugi, chili, onion, and ssamjang (dipping sauce). With soup dishes, just having good tangy fermented kkakdugi on the side makes the whole meal taste so much better.

Self-serve bar set up on one side of the restaurant

The self-serve bar was also neatly set up, so we could easily grab whatever side dishes we needed.

There was kimchi, kkakdugi, onion, chili, and even sauces available, and you could take as much extra as you wanted of whatever you were running low on.

On one side there was 17-grain misugaru (roasted grain powder drink) set out. Nutty grain powder mixed with sesame seeds made a refreshing palate cleanser after the meal.

Right next to it was yeot-gangjeong (barley crisp snack), which made the self-serve bar fun to use even with kids along. My child absolutely devoured this yeot-gangjeong.

With one menu order per person, the freshly cooked black rice comes with free refills, and the rice was sticky and delicious. They must be using good rice.

How does the 16,000-won wang galbitang taste?

Wongi-hoebok wang galbitang with two rib bones

The wang galbitang arrived with two big rib bones inside.

Chunky bone-in wang galbi with clear broth

The chunky ribs, bone and all, looked incredibly hearty just from the visuals alone. The clear, light broth was bubbling away, and the smell was so nutty and savory.

Rib meat pulled apart with chopsticks

It wasn't overly seasoned, yet had that deep, savory flavor that comes from the ribs, and it stayed hot all the way through. Best of all, the rib meat was so tender it practically fell off the bone, making it easy to eat, and the lean meat had that nice light, moist texture.

A spoonful of black rice soaked in broth
A bite of rib meat topped with kkakdugi

Soaking the rice in the broth was seriously heavenly. And topping a big bite of meat with the cool, crunchy kkakdugi — I had absolutely nothing to envy in that moment.

Soy-braised short ribs, small size, 48,000 won: five rib bones

The braised beef ribs also arrived generously portioned. There were five large rib bones inside.

Lifting the heavy braised beef ribs

It was so heavy it was hard to lift with one hand. And the beef rib meat was braised so tender it practically slipped off the bone, easy to pull apart with just chopsticks.

The salty, subtly sweet soy sauce seasoning soaked moistly into the rib meat with great savory depth, and it wasn't aggressively sweet — more the kind of flavor that goes well with rice. There was a bit of chili mixed in, so the finish had a slight kick. If you're eating with kids, you should ask them to leave the chili out.

Glass noodles, onion, carrot, and rice cakes were mixed in too, so there was fun in picking through everything. And honestly, the sauce was a work of art — you just keep scooping more of it! I wanted to mix rice into the sauce and scrape the bowl clean, but there was so much meat that we filled up quickly.

After finishing up a filling meal and grabbing a light dessert too, it felt like a proper, complete meal. My kid loved the yeot-gangjeong so much that I paid ₩3,000 and brought a bag home.

Final verdict: why I'd recommend Achasan Tong Galbitang

Achasan Tong Galbitang is a great place to visit on a day when you're craving hot broth and a generous amount of meat.
