Tamra Hansang, a Seogwipo restaurant near Olle Market in Jeju | Braised cutlassfish set

Since I was in Jeju, I really wanted braised cutlassfish (galchi-jorim), but I also wanted sashimi. Sure, I could've eaten them separately, but I found a place where you can have both on one table — Tamra Hansang in Seogwipo.

Braised cutlassfish, fresh sashimi, and side dishes — it was such a generous spread. Let me tell you all about it!

Tamra Hansang is about a 2-minute drive from Seogwipo's Olle Market. If you park at Hotel The M's outdoor lot, you get ₩2,000 off parking. I actually parked at a public lot two minutes away on foot and walked over!

What the exterior and interior felt like

Exterior of Tamra Hansang nestled between taller buildings
Entrance of the cozy-feeling Tamra Hansang building

Tamra Hansang looked clean from outside, tucked between taller buildings, which gave it a cozy, cute feel.

Stepping inside, sunlight poured in through large windows, and the wood-toned interior gave off a warm atmosphere.

The overall space was spacious too, so it never felt cramped.

The tables had plenty of room, so even with lots of dishes on the table, eating felt comfortable, and I liked that there was good spacing between neighboring tables too.

Group seating space set up on the 2nd floor

There's also group seating on the 2nd floor, so it seems like a good spot for family trips or group gatherings. By the way, they said pets are welcome too if you bring a dedicated pet cage!

True to its name, Tamra Hansang is set up so you can enjoy Jeju's local dishes as a full table spread. The signature set menus include grilled cutlassfish set, braised cutlassfish set, dombe pork set, and braised mackerel set — quite a variety.

They also had à la carte options like bomal (top shell) kalguksu, abalone porridge, and sea urchin soup. But you need to order a set menu to get the sashimi, fried dishes, and other extras alongside the main dish, so if you're visiting with two or more people, I'd recommend going with a set menu!

Since our whole goal was braised cutlassfish, we ordered the braised cutlassfish set for two (₩75,000) without a second thought. They said the cutlassfish is delivered directly from the boat.

From side dishes to fried cutlassfish

Side dishes beginning to be served one by one

After ordering, the side dishes started coming out one by one while we waited.

A full spread of side dishes including soy-marinated shrimp and stir-fried anchovies

Soy-marinated shrimp, seasoned eggplant, stir-fried anchovies, seaweed, seasoned hijiki, kimchi, cabbage salad, pickled onions, plus grilled pork belly and fried cutlassfish! I was already happy.

I'd never had fried cutlassfish before, and dipping it in the accompanying sauce, it just melted in my mouth — shocking.

Boneless cutlassfish with not a single bone, coated in crispy batter — absolutely delicious 😇

Deliciously stir-fried anchovy side dish

The soy-marinated shrimp was seasoned just right, and the stir-fried anchovies were so good my mom wanted to know the secret recipe. From my experience eating out, places with delicious side dishes usually have a delicious main dish too, so I started getting even more excited for the braised cutlassfish...

The fresh sashimi lineup — sweet shrimp, cutlassfish, mackerel, flounder

Then the fresh sashimi I'd been waiting for arrived.

Sweet shrimp sashimi, cutlassfish sashimi, mackerel sashimi, flounder sashimi — every single piece was glossy and looked so appetizing.

Chewy and fresh, everything was so good. The sweet shrimp sashimi, which I hadn't had in a while, was as plump and springy as ever!

The main braised cutlassfish and pot rice

Finally, the main dish — braised cutlassfish — arrived! Bubbling away, it made my mouth water.

I scooped some rice out of the pot, poured water in to make scorched rice water for later, and dug into the braised cutlassfish properly.

The cutlassfish was so plump. There was so much flesh to pick at, and the sauce was the kind that makes you keep reaching for more rice.

Picking off the cutlassfish flesh and piling it onto a big spoonful of rice!! Haha, I got to put my bone-picking skills to use again after a while. Tasted like honey. Being able to eat everything I wanted in one meal made it such a generous and satisfying meal.

Overall thoughts

For people like me who want braised or grilled fish, but also want meat, and also want sashimi — this is truly the best restaurant. (I'm a fan of hoetjip with generous banchan spreads.)

When there's a wide variety of menu items, food quality often suffers, but at Tamra Hansang, everything from the side dishes to the main braised cutlassfish was genuinely delicious. The owner was also so kind that I'm definitely coming back.

Having such a generous, satisfying meal on my Jeju trip made me so happy 💕
