Naengmyeon restaurant with a cat out front in Pyeongtaek: Seoul
In short
Seoul Myeonok is a cold noodle (naengmyeon) restaurant across from Pyeongtaek Station plaza and AK Plaza in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, open since 1973 and now run by the third generation. A couple trying pyongyang naengmyeon for only the second time ordered pyongyang naengmyeon, bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles) and a half plate of domestic pork belly suyuk (boiled pork), plus the self-serve warm broth by the entrance. The broth at Seoul Myeonok is mild yet savory enough to convince a pyongyang naengmyeon beginner, and a resident cat greets guests out front.

Near Pyeongtaek Station there's a naengmyeon spot that's been going for 60 years. This is a place I'd actively recommend even to pyongyang naengmyeon beginners — I was blown away by how clean and precise every dish tasted, from the pyongyang naengmyeon to the bibim naengmyeon to the boiled pork. This is...
Seoul Myeonok
Where is Seoul Myeonok and where do you park?
Seoul Myeonok sits near Pyeongtaek Station, facing AK Plaza and the station plaza. There's a small parking area out front, but if it's full you'll probably need to use the public parking lot.
Seoul Myeonok opened in 1973 and is now on its third generation of family ownership. Surviving nearly 60 years means... it. survived. (cue the triumphant music) Hehe, I love a place with this kind of history.

What is the restaurant like inside?
The inside had that real local-favorite energy. There were solo diners, and some men who looked like regulars — as they left, they shouted out loud how good the meal was. My excitement level shot up even more.

Seoul Myeonok menu and what we ordered
My husband and I ordered one pyongyang naengmyeon, one bibim naengmyeon, and one half plate of domestic pork belly boiled pork. Beyond naengmyeon, Seoul Myeonok also serves beef short rib soup, hanwoo beef hot pot, braised short ribs, pyongyang-style hand dumplings, charcoal-grilled pork bulgogi, mung bean pancake, and pollock salad.

Don't skip the self-serve warm broth by the door
There's a warm broth dispenser by the entrance you can help yourself to. There's no sign explaining it, so a lot of people probably miss it, but you really should try it (ჱ̒ ー̀֊ー́ ). I'm a broth lover who always grabs the soup or broth even at places like Gimbap Heaven.

Even the warm broth here was delicious, and that's when I felt this place had something special going on.

The staff brought out today's stars on a big tray.

Such a neat, tidy spread.
Half plate of domestic pork belly suyuk

The half plate of boiled pork with side dishes — pollock salad and dried radish strips. Even the side dishes were high quality, honestly impressive. The boiled pork itself was exactly right, clean and delicious. This is a dish we'll definitely order again when we come back — it pairs perfectly with the naengmyeon.

Pale and glossy, with just the right balance of fat and lean meat — the flavor was excellent. Eating it with the dried radish strips was heavenly.
Pyongyang naengmyeon on a second try: it passed

I'm actually a pyongyang naengmyeon beginner — this was only my second time trying it, shh. The first time, my usually-eats-anything husband went quiet and there was a funny, slightly awkward moment. But at Seoul Myeonok, he nodded in approval. Passed with flying colors ᜊ(੭ ˊ ᵕˋ)੭ : ゚.+

Just writing this now makes my mouth water — Seoul Myeonok's pyongyang naengmyeon has this odd, addictive savoriness that keeps you coming back for another bite. Holding the broth in your mouth, you could really feel how clean yet deep the flavor was. I get now why there are pyongyang naengmyeon fanatics — I think I dipped a toe into that world myself today.
Eating it alongside the boiled pork is the best combination. I heard the broth is made the traditional, painstaking way, and tasting it, I completely believed it. Seoul Myeonok's pyongyang naengmyeon... ♥
Bibim naengmyeon and seasoned pollock salad

My husband loves bibim naengmyeon, and after just one bite he said this place is good.

Vividly colored, glistening, chunky pollock salad — a versatile side that goes with both the bibim and pyongyang naengmyeon. It wasn't just a taste-sized portion either; there was plenty.

My husband piling pollock salad, salted shrimp, chili, and garlic on top of the boiled pork like a pro.

The tangy sauce soaked between the noodle strands was delicious.

There's meat in the pyongyang naengmyeon too, so my husband gave me a piece haha.

The cat out front, Seoul Myeonok's mascot
Whoa, that round little belly. As we walked out after our meal, there was this adorable cat guarding the entrance — Seoul Myeonok's mascot. Lucky cat, living right next to such a good restaurant, meow.
Seoul Myeonok — I got to see firsthand why this place has survived almost 60 years and why locals leave such genuine reviews. I'm not usually the type to go out of my way for naengmyeon, but I'm definitely coming back here. Stay in business for a long, long time ♥
