In short

Sushi Maiu Seolleung Station Branch is a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant a 4-minute walk from Exit 5 of Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Instead of piling plates onto the rail, the kitchen makes sushi to order, so the otoro, tuna belly, Korean beef sashimi sushi, cuttlefish sushi, salmon-onion sushi and flounder sushi all arrived fresh. Solo dining here was comfortable, and the tuna belly and Korean beef sushi were the clear top picks.

I'm a professional solo diner 🤭 Is there any menu better suited to eating alone than sushi? While I was mulling over what to eat by myself, I heard there was a great conveyor-belt sushi place near Gangnam, so I went to check it out.

Honestly, I never really liked conveyor-belt sushi. There's always that feeling like the sushi on the rail has been sitting there a while... But I heard that at Sushi Maiu, they don't stack the rail full — they make it fresh to order instead, so you get sushi that isn't dried out. I went in with high expectations!

Sunday afternoon solo lunch: what's the vibe like?

The space is nice and roomy, right? I went at an off-peak time on a Sunday, so it was comfortable to eat alone. Just note that weekday evenings or lunch can get crowded!

Spacious, comfortable interior of the conveyor-belt sushi restaurant

Conveyor-belt sushi places are all about that rail spinning with plates, right! You might think there isn't much on it,,! but it seems like they keep it light on purpose to keep the sushi fresh. If there's something you want, just order it directly and they'll make it fresh on the spot, so it's even fresher and tastier.

Five sushi pieces I ordered

I wanted to focus on the freshest sushi, so I ordered a few individually.

  • Tuna belly
  • Salmon-onion sushi
  • Korean beef sashimi sushi
  • Otoro
  • Cuttlefish sushi

Otoro

The first thing I ate was, I believe, otoro! It came on the gold plate, so it's the most expensive sushi per plate. Even from the look of it, you can tell how fresh it is, right,,? The fish wasn't a small cut either — it was thick, so I cut it in half before eating. When I put it in my mouth, the rice was well seasoned too, and it paired so well with the fish. This is a menu item I 100% recommend, so please, please try it,,ㅎ

Cuttlefish sushi

Second was the cuttlefish sushi. It had a chewiness on a totally different level from regular squid sushi. The more you chew, the more you get that subtle, gentle sweetness unique to cuttlefish, with no fishy taste at all — just fresh and delicious. If you like a good chewy texture, I recommend the cuttlefish sushi.

Salmon-onion sushi

This is my personal favorite, the salmon-onion sushi. What matters most with salmon-onion is the sauce — the sweet sauce meeting the crunchy onion is undeniably delicious.🤍

Korean beef sashimi sushi

After the otoro, this is my second favorite — the beef sashimi sushi! I was worried the meat might be tough, but that worry disappeared the moment I took a bite. It also had that great chewy texture. And it was lightly brushed with sesame oil, and the fragrant sesame oil smell was so good!

Tuna belly sushi

Tuna belly sushi. Whether you eat it as sashimi or sushi, this cut is really precious, right? The moment I put it in my mouth, it just melted away completely,, The more I chewed, the more rich tuna fat and savory umami came through, with zero fishy taste. This is sushi that's genuinely worth the money.

Checking freshness with the flounder sushi

There's one sushi I always eat — flounder sushi. It might be a common menu item, but I make a point of trying flounder sushi to gauge how fresh a place is. Sushi Maiu's flounder sushi didn't disappoint either! The cut was thick, filling my whole mouth with flounder. The texture was chewy yet soft. Once again, I was reminded that a place that nails the basics is a real hidden gem!

Wrap-up

Today I reviewed Sushi Maiu Seolleung Station Branch. Out of all the sushi, my clear top pick would be the tuna belly and the Korean beef sushi! The tuna belly that melts away in your mouth with pure savory richness, and the chewy, flavorful Korean beef sushi — these are the must-try menu items if you visit.

Because everything was made fresh to order, I got to enjoy consistently fresh, high-quality sushi from start to finish, and with the comfortable solo-dining environment, parking support, and the great drink discount on top, my satisfaction was even higher. If you want to enjoy delicious sushi and a relaxed solo meal near Seolleung Station, definitely pay a visit!
