Jongak anniversary date bar with Budweiser and pork ribs: Sudowonui

In short

Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo (수도원의 비밀 저장고) is a medieval monastery-themed pub in a basement on Samil-daero 17-gil in Jongno, Seoul. On a first visit the signature dish, Ribs Forgiven After Confession, arrived so tender the meat slid off the bone, and it paired well with a cold Budweiser craft draft. Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo is a concept you rarely see in central Jongno, making it a fun pick for an anniversary date or a special-occasion gathering.

First impression of Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo near Jonggak Station

The name alone sets this place apart from your typical Jonggak Station restaurant, so I got curious and paid a visit. Even the menu names aren't plain — the ribs dish is called 'Ribs Forgiven After Confession,' which made me smile before I even ordered :)

There are so many restaurants and bars near Jonggak Station that office workers flock to, and a lot of them blend together — so a place with such a distinctive concept really stood out.

Basement entrance styled like a medieval monastery

The concept is on point from the entrance itself, right?! It really feels like stepping into medieval times.

Medieval monastery interior and seating at Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo

Since Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo's whole concept is a medieval monastery, the space keeps that mood consistent throughout, and the props and decor scattered around aren't just pretty — they really commit to the theme. So I found myself looking around even while eating. It's different from your usual Jonggak Station bar, and there was fun in just browsing the space before the food even arrived.

A signature menu named to match the monastery concept

The menu names, too, stayed true to the concept.

  • Monk's Feast BBQ Platter
  • Ribs Forgiven After Confession
  • Monastery Garden Arugula Jambon Pizza
  • Deep Night Gorgonzola Pizza
  • Dawn's Rosé Cream Gnocchi
  • Predawn Ube Parfait

Alongside barbecue, there's pizza, gnocchi, pasta, and even dessert — a great spot whether you want to cover round one and two here, or visit separately for each.

Since it was my first visit, I ordered the signature Ribs Forgiven After Confession along with a Budweiser craft beer.

What comes with Ribs Forgiven After Confession

The Ribs Forgiven After Confession set came with ribs, fries, salad, pickles, and two sauces. The ribs passed the visual test right away! Since it's not a common menu item elsewhere, it felt all the more refreshing.

How did the pork ribs and Budweiser draft taste?

I tasted the main star, the ribs, first — and the tenderness under my knife and fork was on another level. It seemed like they'd gone through a long, low-temperature sous-vide process before being finished in the oven, because the meat slid clean off the bone without any effort at all, an ultimate tenderness :)

With thick-cut ribs, the meat is often a bit dry or tough to chew, but the ribs at Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo melted the moment they hit my mouth — genuinely delicious. Crisp outside, juicy inside, showing the textbook definition of that contrast, packed with juices. The fries on the side made it even better too — they seemed to bring out the flavor even more, haha.

Why Sudowonui Bimil Jeojanggo works for an anniversary date

After biting into a big chunk of ribs slathered in barbecue sauce and following it with a swig of cold Budweiser draft, the heaviness of the sauce and the greasiness of the meat juice got washed away by the carbonation!!

Thanks to that, I had a great date in a place with a really good atmosphere :) Next time I'd like to try the other menu items too. With its distinctive medieval monastery concept, hard to find in the middle of Jongno, it's a great spot for a date or a gathering on a special day — I really recommend it!! haha
